I think too many times people make the mistake that "Good Coordinator/position coach = Good head coach."
When Sparano was promoted to Offensive Coordinator, alot of people had a fit because Washington had just hired Saunders, and here we were promoting the coach of our WORST unit - the offensive line.
Not only was he a terrific offensive coordinator he has shown to be at least a pretty decent head coach so far.
So I don't think Garrett's performance as OC is relevant at all to whether or not he will be a good head coach. Much more important are things like;
Can he communicate clearly?
Is he a good motivator?
Is he respected?
Can he deal with the athlete's across the entire team, not just the offense? Can he relate to the players? Do they trust him?
Does he have a vision for the team going forward? Can he comunicate that vision to the people who need to know?
If things like that can be answered yes, then it doesn't really matter if Garrett even knows the plays. That's why you have coordinators and position coaches.
Very true. Jimmy Johnson did not call the offense or the defense he left that up to coordinators.
