APs TD Run

He is a beast but Heath needs to secure the tackle and not go for the strip when you are the last line of defense.

This was exactly my point when folks were hearing that we paid extra attention to forcing turnovers in the offseason. You can't "force" turnovers, you can capitalize on someone's mistake. But when you try and force turnovers like Heath did and someone doesn't make a mistake, that's exactly what happens. You spend all your energy trying to rip the ball out, only to see the RB gain an extra 5 yards or so because you're not actually tackling. That is fundamentally poor football -- looks good for the cameras but when all is said and done, that type of behavior nets more bad defensive plays than good. Fly to the football, hit hard and make sure tackles. If you play like that, the turnovers will come.

One of the top 5 Runs I have ever seen. As soon as his feet hit the ground again that surge forward was awesome.

A little bit of hyperbole, don't you think? That run wasn't even top 5 this season, much less ever.

Agree, Barry Sanders alone has 20 runs per season better than that. To me that was just a teammate catching him and pushing him in the endzone with leverage. Nothing special about it.

That deserves a public shout-out... Man, that guy is a beast...

The one frustrating thing about that play is that it looked like Heath kind of let go, thinking AP was going to fall. Gotta play to the whistle and make sure he's down. Rookie mistake, but Heath met him well, I like what we got in these young safeties (Heath and Wilcox)

Yup, it was about to be a great open field tackle until the second Cowboys defender comes in and keeps AP up. And then it was still about to be a tackle until another Viking holds him up and pushes him into the end zone. On top of the fact that he met zero resistance before getting to Heath, this really wasn't a great run at all, especially for a guy of AP's ability. Dude generally runs over safeties, especially when he's got such a clear running lane, but Heath stoned him.

Please. Real fans recognize good plays when they see them. That's an awesome run and Peterson does an amazing job of fighting and keeping his legs going. Two guys should be able to take one guy down. But they couldn't because on that play AP was superhuman.

Sorry, but you really need to watch the play again. Heath was about to plant him on his back. It was only pure luck that another Cowboys defender actually propped him up before another Vikings player arrived.

I think its more "suspect safety play" rather than an amazing run by AP.. I cringe when I see Heath in our secondary.

I sometimes wonder what are people seeing?

Heath did a pretty good job- you need to go back and watch it again.

Maybe he would have scored I don't know but Dallas had a chance to bring him down and failed. Look I'm not upset, last thing I wanted was 1st and goal from the 1 yard line Minn likely picks that up within 3 plays and eats up clock in the process. I was willing to conceed it to get the ball back and some time left to work with.

agreed, there is plenty to criticize heath for (although he is playing pretty solid for a rookie street free agent) but that play isn't one of them imo.

I don't have an issue with Heath he is a young rookie learning. I think he has a good upside to him but right now he is inexperianced and is going to make mistakes. However he makes good plays as well, it is easier being patient with a player when you see hustle and the ability to make good plays.

Yes, look at the video link in this thread, .. watch the second view of the play, from the EZ. Pause the video as it is playing and picture the TE from Minn not being there. AP is going down on his back if that TE does not come in and hold him up.

It is that simple.

The first run actually tells a lot cause it tells you the actual yardage, while the second video you can't tell where the TE held him up and where AP started to run again...

I'm allowed my opinions. When I see a guy lifted off the ground and as soon as his feet hits again he scores, it is a good one in my mind. Great effort not to give up.

Heath let go of Peterson's leg. You don't let go until the running back is on the ground and/or the whistle blows. He had no reason to let go of Peterson. I thought it was a poor play by Heath along with several other factors that resulted in the TD run by Peterson.

I wasn't too impressed with Heath in the pre-season. He had a habit of taking poor angles in run support. I think he has looked a slight bit better in the regular season, but he has a way to go before he can become a solid contributor.

People miss this part... The TE makes a great play and prevens him from falling, but AP holds himself up with his legs as well, with his butt like 2 inches from the floor and has to dig to propel hs legs forward to pull the defendors into the end-zone. When you look at it from the top angle, I'd esimate that portions happens around 3 yards away from the end-zone.

AP had clear sailing right up to Heath and lots of room around Heath to run. In 99.9% of those situations, AP will put some sick move on the defender and walk untouched into the end zone or he'll simply run right over the safety. Neither of those things happened. Yes, the ultimate outcome was not as hoped, but it was a 0.1% kind of play by Heath. He stopped him dead in his tracks in the open field.

In the end, regardless of the details, I'm glad it was not a GW TD run or we would be seeing it even more all week long.
