IRVING, Texas --
According to multiple sources, if McClain, who was acquired Tuesday, does not make the team or is not on the Cowboys' 53-man roster for five games or 46-man game-day roster for three games in 2014, then the Ravens will not receive any compensation.

As it stands right now, the trade calls for the Cowboys to give up their seventh-rounder in 2016 if McClain is on the 53-man roster for five games or 46-man roster for three games only if their pick is better than the Ravens' pick in the round. If it is, then the teams will swap selections. If the Ravens finish with a worse record in 2014, then there is no swap.

If McClain plays in 50 percent of the defensive snaps in 2014, then the Ravens would receive the Cowboys' sixth-round pick in 2015 and the Cowboys would receive Baltimore’s seventh-round pick in 2015.

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com | July 2, 11:50 AM ET | PermalinkIRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys could end up giving the Baltimore Ravens nothing in the trade for linebacker Rolando McClain.

According to multiple sources, if McClain, who was acquired Tuesday, does not make the team or is not on the Cowboys' 53-man roster for five games or 46-man game-day roster for three games in 2014, then the Ravens will not receive any compensation.

If McClain plays in 50 percent of the defensive snaps in 2014, then the Ravens would receive the Cowboys' sixth-round pick in 2015 and the Cowboys would receive Baltimore’s seventh-round pick in 2015. McClain has not played since November 2012, but the Cowboys could look at him as a replacement for Sean Lee, who is out for the year with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He could also be in the mix as a strongside linebacker.

The Cowboys would gladly give up a low-round pick if McClain, a former first-round pick in 2010 of the Oakland Raiders, is a starter even for just one year.

McClain did not receive any guaranteed money in the one-year deal he signed with the Cowboys.

If you are playing in 50% of defensive snaps, you are a significant contributor - I'd definitely give up a 6th rounder for a immediate contributor...especially one with his upside. Of course, the pessimist in me finds it very difficult to believe he will even make the team, given the reports on the physical shape he is in. But here's hoping anyway.

Still a free look and if he hits "changed & matured" the deal could finally be a Jerry "**********".

Basically it isn't a Risk-Reward deal, it's a Reward-Risk deal. If we get no reward, we have no risk. If we have low reward, we give low risk. If we get medium/high reward, we give slightly more risk, but still low.

Some more new information:

Here is a link to a new Broaddus report and analysis on McClain...
Thinks if he is in shape could be a good find!!!

Well, yeah, he was a top 5 pick in the draft. He obviously has talent. The problem is, and has always been, between the ears with this guy. He is going to take significant snaps away from Holloman or Hitchens in the preseason. If McClain ends up not making the team, it's going to be a huge blow having to roll with an inexperienced Hitchens or Holloman.

We don't have much of a choice this year because Sean Lee is made of glass. Lee was hurt in college and
now every year in the pros so this could result in another long dry hole for Jerry. Lee's body just doesn't seem
to take the punishment. If McClain really has changed, this just might (might) bail Jerry out of another
big contract debacle.

Not really, come on people want starters and depth, all these guys will be getting ample snaps in camp and Holloman is now in his 2nd year and 2nd camp so he is not a rookie. McClain is will turn 25 in a few days so we are not talking some over the hill player, this is all about competition

So now that it has been shown to be a zero risk trade, which makes the sky if falling crowd look ridiculous, this is the best response you can come with? This 1 player on a 90 man roster is going to prevent multiple other players from developing in training camp...

This is essentially no different than what the Cowboys have BEEN doing. Picking up guys off the street and giving them shots. The only difference this time around is if the guy pans out we'll give up a low pick in the 6th round. If he doesn't then we give up nothing. Nothing different than what we've been doing.

I was wondering the same thing, Then we get to hear that we have no depth at these position afterwards. I don't know how McClain will fair nor Holloman or Hitchens they will go out and compete that is what people holler about now you add more competition and now it is somehow a bad thing?

Well, they certainly haven't gotten the defense right. Two straight years of historically bad defenses.

So, two years of bad defenses. Does that mean that year three will be bad, and year four, and year five, and year six, and year seven and...? You should be smarter than that.

And that is what Rod Marinelli and the Cowboys are trying to get turned around. Bringing in players to camp to compete is a good way of getting things turned around.
