INDIANAPOLIS -- This is a big evaluation week for the Dallas Cowboys at the NFL scouting combine. But it's not as important as the work the team did before coming to Indianapolis on critiquing their own players.
The focus of the Cowboys' free agency so far has been on Dez Bryant and DeMarco Murray, but just as telling for the team's future is what they do with their 18 other restricted or unrestricted free agents, like Doug Free, Rolando McClain or Jermey Parnell.
"The evaluations you make on your own team are the most important evaluations you make," Jason Garrett said. "We'll spend a lot of time evaluating these guys at the Combine and rightfully so. They're the building blocks of the future, but we have to make great decisions on our own football team and great business decisions as well and have discipline in certain areas and make sure that we do what's best for our entire football team. That's in the forefront of our mind. Hopefully we can get that business handled."
Garrett said the Cowboys are working in "parallel lines," when it comes to the draft and free agency. How the Cowboys handle the multi-tasking from now through the start of the season will go a long way in determining whether they can repeat the type of season they had in 2014 (12-4 and an NFC East title) or fall back in the pack.
The Cowboys will have discussions with the agents for a number of their free agents, but it's unlikely they will be able to bring the entire band back in 2015.
"There's a lot of moving parts," executive vice president Stephen Jones sad. "That's obviously something we're getting our hands around and how we want to divide up our cap space, how we go about the task of each one of these players. Obviously we were successful last year and there's a lot of good on this team. We're a young team. This is a critical time for us. We've got to make good decisions and we don't want to make wrong ones."
