Are any of you employERS? If you were, you'd understand Jerry's position on Dan.

For one moment, look at this thing from a pure business perspective. I know it is difficult, and I know that Jerry has made some incredibly unproductive decisions over his tenure.

But this Dan Reeves thing? Come on.

I own a consulting firm. I have been in the consulting business for over 15 years. You do NOT EVER write/sign a contract with a consultant without specifying how many hours that consultant is going to work for you. It is simply not done.

Think about it. Would you lay out MILLIONS of dollars of your own money for a consultant without ANY guarantee that the consultant would be onsite working for a minimum amount of hours per week?

It has nothing to do with "punching a time clock." It has to do with contractually making sure you get what you pay for.

Think about a scenario in which you are applying for a new job. You do well in the interview, and the salary negotiations start. The negotiations end with you making the following assertion, "Sure, $1.5 million a year should cover it, but one last thing - I can't sign up to this 40-hours-a-week-thing. In fact, I'm not willing to guarantee that I'll be in the office for any number of hours a week. I need a flexible schedule. But trust me, you'll get tremendous value for the salary you pay me." How do you think that interview would end?

Dan may have promised up and down that he would get the job done. That's great, but from a contract perspective you have got to back it up. You've got to commit to a certain number of hours in order to get paid.

You can vent all you want about stupid decisions from Jerry which are killing this team, but in this case, Jerry was not the one being unreasonable. Any business would be committing suicide by signing contracts with consultants that contain no hours clauses.

By the way, if any of you would like to sign a contract :write:for one of my consultants where you pay us a certain amount per year, and we do not have to guarantee how many hours we will put in on the project, please PM me. I'd be ecstatic to accommodate your request.

And BTW the entire concept of keeping $3M coaches who are so bad they need consultants just screams "good business".

That is a point forgotten.

Praise him for being a smart businessman but forget what placed him in that position to begin with.

Sorry I dont buy it, more often then not a professional like Reeves is going to work twice as many hours as any one expects and if he isnt you would part ways with him.

If you know you have a guy who is going to put in 60 hours a week you dont put in his contract that he has to work 40 hours a week. Seems stupid to me. Either way how many other football guys do you think have stipulations like that in their contracts? NONE!

Tell us this.

If there are no 'time cards' issued to employees then how would Jerry or Dan ever know the exact amount of hours he worked during the week?

My guess was the electronic "key" they use to get into the building. Next thing you know, Jerry will be timing bathroom breaks.

Tommy Jones was going to follow him around with a stopwatch.

Nah, what if you are arriving with three guys at the same time.

Each one has to walk in alone, lol.

If you are on an hour wage you will be getting a time card.

My point was that the clause was just something for Jerry to let Dan know who the boss was around these parts.

Or you could pull a "Costanza" by leaving your car in the parking lot 24/7, making it seem like you're burning the midnight oil. That would impress Jerry.

I'm confused as hell in all of this, and have been since it's been announced!

However, I really doubt it was over a "time card" issue! This is Dan Freaking Reeves we are talking about...does Jerry really think that Dan would screw him over for a few hours?

Something else was in the air...what, I don't know...but it has to be something else.

Yeah, a "business man" needs a contract to say what needs to be done...but this? I don't buy it...you don't lose a proven winner/consultant over some silly issue about how much time you spend doing your job...ESPECIALLY with a man like Dan Reeves.

Something smells in this whole mess...

I agree with Jerry, I always have. I have always said that me bieng the owner, it is my money I want to know about everything, and I will be in one everything, and I always have the final say.

Than I hope you know more about building football teams than he does.

Reeves said contracts are basically a handshake. That is something I heard from my Grandpa who conducted business this way in the 40s through the 70s...It just don't happen anymore because trust has evaporated with character over the years....a man's word is not worth much today. Jerry was in the right here. If Reeves was going to honor the agreement, having it in writing is not a sign of distrust....just a sign of today.

That is because IMO, it was not a "time" issue..if it was, Reeves would have signed off on it.

If it was a time issue for Jerry...he does not do that! Hell, he had something good going on here! But he lost out? Why? Because the thought Dan Reeves would screw him over for a few hours?

Nope...it was something else.

I own my own company, so I know where you are coming from. BUT ... the one thing I have to ask is does anyone else have to punch a clock (and have it put in their contract)? I highly doubt it!!!!!!!! Funny how Jerry all of sudden is going to hold people accountable.

I have my own company too. I have an unorthodox philosophy. I expect people to wow me by their performance drive and determination. I only hire exceptional people of which I have an eye for. If one of my employees can get his/her job done by 3pm or whatever I don't have a problem with them leaving early. I am a goals/results/performance driven boss. Its all about performance.
