Are people on this board too young to remember E. Smith and M. Irvin?

As I said, the fact is Jerry Jones has never made such comparisons with other players he as drafted and touted in the past. Regardless if this is only Jerry making these comparisons, the fact that he is making them adamently on Felix Jones' behalf is quite noteworthy; dismissing this as just another "sales pitch" would be quite ignorant.

Wasn't Jerry Jones the one who told us Quincy Carter was another Michael Vick???

I think I'll take what Jerry Jones says with a grain of salt.

But I like the Felix Jones pick. We're splitting hairs between him and Mendenhall.

All I keep reading here (and in the media) are controversial posts debating whether Dallas should have drafted F. Jones or Mendenhall and may argue for the latter. But even among those who argue for Felix Jones, nobody is talking about the comments Jerry Jones made about Felix Jones having a “Michael Irvin” work ethic and team mentality, and a lower body build similar to E, Smith’s - with similar elusiveness but with more speed. Are posters just not fazed by such comparisons, or have most forgotten, or simply are too young to know, these two 90’s Icons?

It’s a legitimate question because anyone who remembers and can appreciate a Michael Irvin and an Emmitt Smith, should also understand and appreciate Jerry Jones’ affinity for them, and further acknowledge the significance behind Jerry Jones’ comparisons of Felix Jones to these 90s Icons. Jerry Jones won Super Bowls with Emmitt and Irvin. Both are/will be Pro Bowlers. Trust me, Jones does not throw their names around liberally. In fact, I have never heard him EVER compare anyone to Irvin or Emmitt since they’ve played/retired, and I find it VERY SIGNIFICANT that Jerry Jones is comparing Felix Jones’ abilities to those of these two storied players.

If I can point to anything that makes me comfortable with the Felix Jones pick, it is these comparisons – these alone – to Irvin and E. Smith that have me convinced he was the right pick – the only pick – truly worthy of a Dallas Cowboys first-round draft selection. Jerry Jones simply would not throw around such comparrisons around if they did not have real teeth to them, yet mostly everybody here and in the media seem to let this go by unnoticed. What gives?

Felix Jones reminds me nothing of Emmitt and this is the first time i've ever heard such a ridiculous comparison. Micheal Irvin work ethic was this inbetween him hitting the crack pipe ?

I don't know about the Emmitt Smith comparison, but the comparison between Felix's work ethic and Irvin's is huge in my opinion. No one worked harder on the field than Irvin and it impacted the entire team. You are discounting that fact because of a completely separate character and behavioral flaw. Jerry didn't draw a comparison between Irvin's drug use and Felix. How did you get that from his quote?

Both could run but not pass. Both had leagal problems, and as a result both, are OUT of the NFL. I think that's about 1,000 grains of salt, enough to season my initial argument quite nicely. Thanks for helping to prove my point, even though you had no intention of doing so.

What are you talking about? Theyve only been gone for 10 years, Id be surprised if there is as much as 15% of posters here who "dont remember them"? Dude, you draft a player, you spin your actions in the best light in interviews. Because Jones drops a couple of names suddenly we are supposed to abandon our objectivity and become Jones zombies? This is a silly post.

I don't believe many of our members have forgotten 22 or 88.

JMO, but when Jerry (the GM overcharging Cowboy fans and knows it but will say or do what he can to generate excitement with his team and sell more tickets in his new stadium) gets excited over his unproven first round draft pick and compares him to Michael Irvin (multiple pro bowler, multiple all pro, multiple super bowl winner, HOFer) that is just putting the cart in front of the horse.

I cant believe the people in this thread who are actually answering the question in the subject line like it was a legit question. Read the post, he was being rhetorical and sarcastic, he wasnt trying to reminisce (sp?). :laugh2:

Then again, if you put it that way ... maybe Jerry Jones was right.
