I honestly believe Jerry is absolutely focused on and committed to building a championship team. The key word in that sentence however, is "Jerry".

He wants the validation that comes with a championship as much as anything but the conundrum is he can't do what it would take to win that championship without delegating some responsibility which would shift focus from him as the man that made it happen. It wouldn't be Jerry's championship.

If fortune was his only motivation even Jerry would realize that finding the right person to run football operations would increase the value of the already most valuable team in sports.

If he doesn't pull it off I would guess he will have regrets in his final days.
Personal validation is everything to him. More important even than money.

Right, the money is academic at this point. And it’s secure. Doesn’t appear his poor mishandling and embarrassing Mgmt style is going to hinder the revenue unfortunately. It’s all about proving he’s a football guy.

Problem is , it’s not sinking. Cowboy fans have continued to reward Jethro for this era in record fashion.
I know you keep pushing the idea that this could be stopped if Cowboy fans would stop spending money. The fact is a large portion of merchandise is probably gifts. You never received a Cowboy related gift? The gift giver isn’t aware, they don’t give a crap.

And the stadium has a good majority of opposing fans. This goes well beyond the emotionally invested fan. I haven’t spent money in 2 decades and the machine won’t stop rolling along. If every Cowboy fan on earth banded together even then it goes beyond that.

To add, most merchandise is bought by casual fans, not the analyst and detail oriented type you see on places like this website.

I understand. I’m just saying.

Here locally the Apathy has set in . Local viewership is down. Some Sundays as low as 25-30% of market as opposed to NFL home teams national average in 40-50% range.

Cowboy fan attendance is down as you mentioned as more opposing fans attend. Which is mainly coming from the huge influx of people moving to Texas in recent years bringing their fandom with them .

The huge financial windfall in Texas has also benefitted the Cowboys . But we still have a nationwide base which continues to support. Many of which still generally even support or defend our owner while he remains the most hated sports personality in Dallas.

Our owner has made some very candid public outburst in recent weeks which has supported my opinions this era on his priorities.

This is what I’ve always appreciated about our dysfunctional ownership and front office. In order to appeal to fans criticism and the hounding from media he often displays his honest feelings.

In the past he’s said he’d doing everything within his power to win and no one wants to win more than him but he’s unwilling to make any changes at the top even after admitting he’d of fired a GM with his record this era. Basically this means he only wants to win his way.

He’s also stated that remaining interesting and relative is the most important factor in order to maintain the record revenue hyping and promoting our iconic brand.

More recently he’s stated that going All In isn’t worth the risk as it could lead to lean years needing more of an overall rebuild.

The reason I bring this up is I think it’s time we adjust our expectations here. If our owner isn’t willing to make the decisions and moves to build more than an entertainment entity which simply maintains interest and relativity why are we beating our heads trying to figure out how to build a championship team or critiquing them for not building more than they have.

I’m not sure that’s a core priority anymore. Sure, if we stumbled onto another Super Bowl they’d be ecstatic and more than happy to take credit.

I think they are content with this level of success as it continues driving their record revenue enabling the celebrity status he’s pursued. At age 80 he still seems determined to stay the course of status quo regardless whether he’s delegated some responsibility or not.

He’s still intent on being the face of the franchise and where the buck stops . And the meddling with coaching decisions and players contracts persist which all too often influence the atmosphere , culture and potentially the strategic football mentality.

Until we can move on from these unfortunate priorities and distractions it’s very difficult for me to take this football franchise very serious. It’s become more of a sports entertainment venture which I believe is the core intention in order to prevent more serious pressure from the fans and media. Any success beyond that is purely coincidental or sheer chance.

Yes they want a SB winner in the worst way, Jerry wants credit that he did it. The problem is wanting and having the smarts to get there are worlds apart based on 27 seasons of failure. Just one click away, Jerry and Stevie can feel it.

My narrative is that winning a championship with his agendas isn’t a top priority.

Only wanting to win your way in order to receive the credit isn’t doing everything within your power to win.

When you recognize that your leadership is an obstacle to overcome and not willing to step aside then the ultimate goal is compromised .

Yeah, insisting on a horrific GM that has failed miserably is far from wanting to win in the worst way.

It's funny how so many fans just cannot comprehend the thought that Jerry absolutely WILL NOT do anything to win. And he's proven that he will not.

Everyone knows what he said..."stay relevant". He did not say win championships.

So the answer to your question is...

They have to recognize it, because they do think they are doing everything possible, and if you asked Jerry he would tell you they are.

It's the same issue.

Jerry insisting on being GM is saying: "I don't care about winning." He pretty much is saying it aloud.
He's admitted in the past that he would get fired for his track record as GM if we wasn't also the owner. That can't be logically squared with "wanting to win in the worst way", "wants to win as bad, if not more so than anyone", "would cut any check to win", "man in the mirror", etc. It's all lies.

Right. They are doing everything possible except for not changing the front office.

It's funny how so many fans just cannot comprehend the thought that Jerry absolutely WILL NOT do anything to win. And he's proven that he will not.
In the early years I believed despite his unorthodox ways he was all about winning . But when he bucked heads with Jimmy after winning back to back championships that was when we first knew that winning wasn’t the absolute priority. And hasn’t been since as he’s been trying to prove he’s a football guy too.

I’m sorry I didn’t recognize this in the beginning. I argued on his behalf in the early years saying we could tolerate a flamboyant owner as such as long as we were doing everything in his power to win which he pledged to us on 2-25-1989. I even supported parting ways with Landry.

I was part of the first group of season ticket holders who traveled with the Cowboys on road trips in 1989. I personally told him on several occasions in the hotels we stayed at with the team that’s we’d support him while rebuilding.

I also was part of a group who abandoned our season tickets after 4 decades when new stadium was built and we told him then in one meeting of season ticket holders that this wasn’t just about the new stadium but in rebellion to how he operates our beloved franchise .

Since is when I came on these forums in 2008 pleading to other fans , first joined on this site under another screen name “ gregtxsports” but had trouble navigating and then found the official Cowboys forum which closed in 2016 I think it was . And rejoined here under my current screen name .

I had no intention of remaining this long on these forums . I’m on no other social media platforms but FB. But when I retired a few years ago I had more time on my hands and it’s become somewhat addicting . Fortunately I’d like to think I’ve planted some seeds here.

It’s comforting to know here in Dallas area that Jethro , a nickname he was given by a local sports writer, is still the most hated sports personality in DFW. But the Cowboys are still the most loved franchise. It’s a love / hate relationship. And he’s benefitted from it.

Hopefully we are on the down slope of his reign over our local franchise we came to love. I’ve been a fan from the beginning attending my first games at the Cotton Bowl and visiting our first headquarters in Playboy building.

Jethro could have been a great owner. But his passion to be a football guy has intoxicated our franchise all for his own joy. Here’s to that day ending soon.
