Are you surprised Schultz was not given a long term deal

I'm surprised.

Especially considering the front office "saved money" by not resigning Gregory.

They were prepared to spend very similar money on Gregory.

Guess he could still be given a new deal after the season since cap space should be available for him if he has another season like last.

Glad they didn't give him a contract though. He's going to be hungry this year and that's good for my fantasy team.

Pass rushers are more valued than TEs. Dont get me wrong I wouldnt have paid Gregory, but we are told generally teams value pass rush higher.

No, the fact that Cleveland screwed the tight end market just like they messed up the quarterback market. Even tagging Shultz a second time is better then giving him a long term contract. Sucks for the player though.

Nope. 30 years ago he would have been considered an elite pass catching TE. Today the league is filled with TEs that are on his level and more come out of college every year. There's nothing special about his game.

Not surprised in the least I said they would make Schultz play under the franchise tag. Before they invest long-term with him they want to see another real good season. Wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up leading the team in catches. With our WR situation Schultz will be targeted a lot.

He’s not as good as the other two and they just rookies

Just no. They arent better.

However...they are cheap amd we get to see this year if they have the potential to take his place next year. If so, Schultz will be let go and we will get a good comp pick. If not, they franchise him again or try to sign him long term.

I am not surprised. In fact it was the best off season move. you have to figure out where you want to spend your money. Schultz is good. but not elite. if he was elite I would say pay him. so the cowboys didn't have the right TE on the roster, didn't bend to the contract demands and smartly tagged him. his price is about where the market is for TEs like him, not elite, probably atop second tier. so their hedged their bets, waiting for draft and seeing how things go. actually almost all TEs that were second tier got tagged by their teams and he was better than them.

so now, drafted a TE, seems like he is going to be good. if he does turn out good, then great, you let Schultz walk and you have a similar TE much cheapre for the next 3,4 years....if Ferguson doesn't work out, then you know where you stand, you have to negotiate and give him a contract. So far so good. lets see how ferguson looks when the actual games start.

Schultz is a good TE
But since you can’t sign everyone you have to made choices. Some positions are very hard to fill and have huge impacts. Those you have to sign. Some guys are elite at their position and most of those you have to sign. Everyone else you just keep churning them.
