Are you surprised Schultz was not given a long term deal

A 2nd tag ($13.1 million) in 2023 would be cheaper than a long term deal.

I'm surprised.

Especially considering the front office "saved money" by not resigning Gregory.

They were prepared to spend very similar money on Gregory.

Guess he could still be given a new deal after the season since cap space should be available for him if he has another season like last.

Glad they didn't give him a contract though. He's going to be hungry this year and that's good for my fantasy team.

He's not a dominant pass catching TE so the lack of blocking skills makes him less than ideal,,, serviceable maybe but not worth big bucks. No doubt his agent points at the stats but, once again, stats are often a big fat lie.

Dalton Schultz deserves credit for what he is, and no more. o_O

I think the normal pay scale for TEs is over the top, though.

No doubt, Dak loves him, judging by his reliance upon him! :D

Not at all, especially after I learned about the drafting of a 4th round TE. Even if Ferguson doesn't turn out to be the same caliber player, he's got the same odds as Schultz did when he was drafted.

Schultz is the very definition of a journeyman starter in the NFL. Good, but not great. He hasn't earned a top contract, and could be readily replaced with another Veteran Free Agent, or improved upon by drafting an elite TE prospect. This isn't meant to denigrate Schultz. But you pay someone what they are worth, and Schultz just isn't good enough to pay him like an elite level player.

Not surprised at all. Sarge is serviceable, but not special. Ferguson being picked was a warning shot, Hendershot making the 53 says even more.

There's no reason to pay Schultz big money unless he shows he's special this season. Otherwise, let him walk and go with the cheaper options.

He had a special season last year. But I do agree that letting him prove it again isnt such a bad idea if the kid was asking for too much. Dak loves Shultz and kid gets open and catches everything. Remember is cheaper to have a great pass catching TE then a great receiver.

Not in agreement on that one. Shultz is a very good pass catching TE. This season I bet he approaches closer to 1000 yards. And Dak loves him which is the most important thing. He is NOT a guy that is easily replaced.

If he has another big season like last year he will have earned the contract.

No, and I doubt they tag him again. The Cowboys drafted a TE to replace Schultz next year. Schultz is an excellent route runner, but he can't block better than a WR. I'm glad for once they didn't give a long term contract on a guy with a big hole in his game.

Shultz put up better numbers than some of those guys

You can't go by just numbers.

Watch Kelce play and he's a game changer at TE. Watch Pitts. He's an athletic freak that can take a game over.

Schultz ain't in that class. Don't get me wrong, he's a very nice TE and I am glad we have him. But he's asking for elite TE money and he's just not an elite TE in that class like some others.

I'm relieved he didn't.

He's is an above average TE but his numbers benefited through the injuries of other TE's. Had they remained healthy then the numbers would have been more evenly distributed.

I think you will see this come to fruition simply by the performance of two rookie TE's who have just as much potential as him.

If Dalton Schultz proves to be a better blocker this year, he'll get a contract that he'll love. He'll need to work harder for it, though!
As I understand it, the Bears are interested in giving him the contract he so desires. We'll see how that situation develops.

What's funny is the irony.

The dude made the team for a reason.

Absolutely! He's a tough competitor with more speed than this team had been accustomed to.

I do admire that too. Let's see how well he manages to prove himself as a blocker, as well. :)

To be sure, I'm fairly certain it's a requirement applies to both Schultz and Hendershot, too. ;)
