i have predicted he will be our starting center coming opening day, i thought he had a pretty solid half. that one blitz up the middle when Orton got sacked, i feel was Jones' fault, Arkin had his man blocked and turned.

your thoughts on Arkin

pretty good but who's fault was that blotched shotgun snap before halftime? Could of been costly since we won by 1 point. lol

I thought this idea was nuts for the past two weeks, but I must be going nuts myself, because I could actually see it happening now. Less because I think he's ready (He's done much better than I thought he could at center this preseason, but the Giants would salivate at the prospects of attacking him), and more because Costa has missed so much time that I'm wondering if his back is worse than they've let on. If Costa doesn't get on the field for the game next week, I'm having a hard time seeing him starting in Week 1.

The sack wasn't really anyone's fault, but maybe the play-caller. :)

Orton faked a handoff to Jones, which put him out of position to pick up a blitz to Arkin's right.

Now, maybe Arkin was supposed to pick up the blitzer and pass his man off to Jones, who would have been in position to block him. But I don't know if that was the line call.

It was a situation where scheme beats scheme. They rushed 8 on that play. Garrett dialed up a play where there was a fake hand off to Jones toward the left side. He wasnt' able to come back to the right to pick up the blitzing ILB.

The other team gets paid, too.

I think Arkin is a legit back uo OC based upon his body of work this pre-season.

He has gotten markedly better each game. We could get by a few weeks with him if we had to. I do not think you can ask him to play 16+ games though. That would be insane.

I thought arkin played pretty solid. Issue was free and tyron tonight

This guy is so weak it's unbelievable. On the first play of the game he was nearly pancaked, even with Mack coming over to help him out.

Check out this play. First try and find where all of the other interior linemen are on the field after the snap. Then find Arkin. How far did he get pushed back? Luckily Murray makes a nice cutback and gets a first down.

People are giving Tyron Smith a hard time for this game. On the third play of the game, Robert Quinn runs around the outside of Smith and comes from behind Tony to force the ball away. But the reality is, Smith didn't *NEED* to worry about Quinn looping out that far and running behind the QB, because the QB should be able to step up into the pocket.

Why couldn't Tony step up into the pocket on that play? Take a look at Arkin and then take a look at where the defender that Arkin was blocking is located. What would have happened had Tony tried to step up in the pocket?

Three plays into the game and you have three absolutely putrid blocks by Arkin.

Here's another fun picture. This is the first play of our second drive. Literally less than a full second had passed since the snap. Imagine if this wasn't a toss sweep to Murray and instead a 5 step drop by Romo. BOOM. Broken collarbone, wrist, what have you.

Literally the worst lineman I've ever seen play in the NFL.

So tell me if I'm hearing you correctly. You're not on the Arkin bandwagon, right?

The hits keep on coming. Third play of third drive. Look at where the rest of the O-line is. Looks at where Arkin is. He's either driven into the backfield or turned around looking at his defender running past him on at least 50% of the snaps.

The guy was driven 3 yards backwards before ROMO COULD EVEN COMPLETE THE HANDOFF!

Is that what they will call the stretcher Romo will be taken out on if Arkin starts at center?

I like Arkin and I think he would be a good backup this year, but everything that theogt has posted is right on the money.

You'd have to be a fool to think that Arkin could be a legit starter this year. He can fill in for spot duty if someone gets injured but he needs to get more strength and learn to anchor against 3 techs and 0 techs.

...the memo?

Arkin is our secret weapon for the screen plays Garrett is drawing up. The penetration the defence gets up the middle ensures the middle of the d-line has created the gap for a good screen.

Obviously Arkin isn't in the plans for being in place to move to the second level and block for the screen, but he is playing his part.

The o-line is also one of Garrett's processes. Right now it's unclear if the process includes Arkin or Costa.

Our hope is we need Callahan to make sure whomever we trot out into the center position is not entirely outclassed game in and game out this season.

Cheers to devoting some of next year's draft to our o-line if needed.

:laugh2:

I'll grant you that he's weaker than Costa, but do you think he might be more consistent than Costa, as in less likely to whiff?

No, not at all. Costa can't string together one single good series, much less an entire game or season.

Theo pretty much put this notion of Arkin starting to rest. Guy needs another year of building strength.

Theo beat me to it. He is very weak and is easily pushed back from the line of scrimmage. I really hope Costa will be able to practice monday.
