Article: Is Football Too Dangerous To Be Played?

I think it's too dangerous to post this article here.:D

I love football and hope it's never banned at the professional level. I myself played from age 10-17.

But I have to admit I will not let my 7 and 11yr old sons play. And if at some point is banned at the lower levels, I'd have to agree.

I can't say what age limit should be imposed. But I think letting 5 yr olds play is rediculous.
Perhaps a ban of full contact tackle football below the high school level would make sense.

Of course not but then what do I know I have Dain bramage. :laugh2:

Anyone who has seen Pee Wee football knows they are not subjected to big hits. I do think high school and beyond the game does have danger to it but then so do some other sports.

Heh, yeah. Might get ME banned.

I think it's a valid question, though. My answer is: If guys know the risks and still want to play, I'm not gonna stop them.

I coached tackle with the real young kids and we had a 6 yr old playing with the 8 year olds. He was so immature and all he did was cry. He came out the entire year and you have to put him in. We decided to put him on the kickoff return team in the front and he got killed. Some parents are crazy.

The NFL is dangerous but so is every sport for the most part. I still say since the game has gotten so big and fast they should widen the field a hair or two so you can spread the guys out a bit.

Driving is the most dangerous thing in the world.

Ban that.

don't need to read. No. Play the game first then talk about it.

Madden and fantasy football does not count.

I think Russian Roulette might have a leg up on driving.

Aside from it being a joke, that's not exactly how you classify if something is the most dangerous thing in the world.

any sport is dangerous. people like to slate soccer for being a cissy sport or whatever but people have died playing that. does that mean you ban it? people died on the tour de france before so lets ban that as well. rock climbing sounds dangerous to me, best ban it. that guy at the winter olympics, can't remember the name of the event so best just ban all of it. health and safety really needs to get a grip

Even if playing football does increase the risk of brain damage more than expected, I don't see the sport being banned...maybe at a level below high school, and perhaps high school as well...but not in college or the professional level.

What people do with their own bodies as an adult is their business, not the government's, but that's a debate in and of itself.

I'm sure by now that the players know what they do is dangerous, yet they make the choice to play anyway, and they should have the right to make that choice if that's what they want to do.

It's a dangerous game. In the spring league I play in we had a guy die on the field this year - took a shot to the chest which ended up at chin, and IIRC the details correctly snapped his neck which basically caused him to suffocate there on the field.

Last year we had a guy who just dropped his head for a second and went crown first at a linemen on a short yardage play, just dropped like a log, was paralyzed for a bit and had to be airlifted off. (He's ok now, he actually played in a playoff game against us later in the year)

Broken arms and legs and torn ligaments are one thing, but this is some serious stuff. I don't think it should be banned, but I wonder if it would be better with some equipment changes - less, not more. Granted the pads aren't an insane amount of protection, but having your head covered makes you a little less cautious, and I'm not sure that's always a good thing. But I'm no doctor, so I really don't know.

Noone's forcing anyone to play, and there are certainly far more dangerous things you could be doing, lol - I just wonder if there are changes that could be made to reduce the unbelievable violence of collisions.

I know that the league and manufactures continue to work on new helmets for more protection and hopefully they will find something that can lessen the blows to the head be it head to head contact and in many cases head to ground contact.

you would think so, but if that were the case all drugs/steriods would be legal.

ill say this though, texans love us some football and if it was ever banned( even at lower levels in school) we would probably secede so never fear, football will live on!:D
