That's my point. I couldn't find the "tongue-in-cheek" smiley. Everybody wants to suggest Gibbs < Parcells because his assistants haven't become successful head coaches. That's no way to measure a coach's ability. It also should give everyone an idea that Gibbs knows what he's doing by hiring Williams and Saunders.
Wrong again. It does indeed reflect on a head coach whose coached as long as Gibbs that he hasn't nurtured, cajoled, browbeaten, mentored and deeloped young assistants into head coaching material. Granted some may not wish to wear the top dog's hat, but it's stunning that someone who has been at it as long as Gibbs has virtually no tree a'tall.
Gibbs has benefited from astute hiring of assistants, but one of the core aspects of good coaching is the mentoring of the young, as Bill is doing with Todd Haley, and he did with Payton and Carthon, etc, as he did with Belichick, Crennel, Weis, etc.
If Gibbs prefers to bring in already completely developed talent as assistants, good for him. But his legacy will be as a taker, not the giver that all good teachers are.
