As exciting as this team is next year should be even better

Yup and the good news is that we can now just focus on defense for the draft. Only offensive position we might have to take in the first 3 rounds is WR if T-Will isn't resigned. But we're gonna be adding at least 2 high round draft picks to the defense combined with Jaylon Smith (and Randy Gregory?)... I can't wait!

Supposedly this next year, it is better for defense than offense in the draft.

I'm convinced these next 3 drafts is when the GM brain trust finally does for the defensive line what it did for the offensive line when it picked Smith, Frederick & Martin.

Since Jerry's owned the team, we've spent 1st round draft picks on guys like Ware, Ellis and Spencer, but they were undersized college DE's who were instantly converted into OLB'ers.

We've NEVER drafted a 300+ pound big hog for the defensive line since Jerry has owned the team. I truly believe the next few drafts is when this starts to change.

One other thing about next year is the first place schedule we will be playing

A first place schedule means nothing any more.
We will play the same schedule as the rest of our division except for 2 games.

The difference in ours and the Commanders schedule this year.
We play TB and SF, they play Carolina and Arizona....do you think they played tougher teams or us.
tB is a contender, Caroina is not. Arizona better than SF. So to about a trade off from what it looked like at the start.
As you never know how teams are from years to year.

So this means nothing for the most part.

On today December 8th the birthday of Jim Morrison its important to remember his words.
"The future's uncertain and the end is always near"

after 03 we were a running back away, 04 was a disaster.
07 we were a corner back away, 08 was a disaster
09 we were good enough to win it all and had all the parts and 10 was a disaster.
after 14 we were a pass rush away, 15 was a disaster.

Next year is next year and who knows what it will be.

I will say the thought of a free agent like eric berry is very slim, I don't think this team will be in those types of sweepstakes again.

The Cowboys won't be big players in free agency for the foreseeable future. Firstly, they don't need to be, and second, given the future contracts they have coming, they can't afford to be.

But it won't stop fans from continuing to dream...

Cringing as I write this and awaiting a barrage of overly ripe tomatoes - but I if a monster first round talent TE drops into the third round, via a night before the draft DUI or falsely accused girlfriend beating, I might just pull the trigger.

This. Nobody is giving a 1st for Tony when he is likely to just be released anyway. If there is a bidding war, it will be when he isn't on the team anymore.

The difference is, a team willing to give up a 2nd or several other picks [not a 1st round] would be GUARANTEED his services. If Tony hits the open market, that changes dramatically. There'll be sharp competition for his services.

Hey if a team offers up a 2nd for Tony, he can be on the first thing smoking to that team. I'll believe it when I see it, though.

There are a couple of ways we don't get a significant piece for Romo.

1. We decide the cap advantage of making him a June 1st cut is preferable or
2. Jerry releases him to allow him to go to his team of choice.

I think neither are likely

Because there will be several teams drooling over the possibility of having a QB of Romo's caliber next year. I would prefer a player to a draft pick because I think it makes sense for the other team as well. Trade a big salary for a big salary.

Other GM's know Romo will be released so they won't be giving up anything for him. Plus, Romo will retire if he has no choice in where he's going to play.....

Why would we release him? We only save 5 mil from the cap. If no one is willing to trade for him he will be the best backup QB in the league.

I'm interested to know who you think these several teams will be? I'm not seeing that many.

That's not what I understood. I thought if he was a June 1st cut we'd save a lot more?.....No?

Not only should we be able to trade Romo for a defensive starter (Sheldon Richardson is my pick)
We will likely be in position to sign a significant FA for the first time in a while (Eric Berry is my choice)

Plus with a little luck Jaylon Smith will make his debut (Hopefully good as new)

Plus another draft while our draft gurus are firing on all cylinders.

These are exciting times to be a Cowboys fan and it should get even better. IMO
Our offense is elite. I'm predicting a heavy dose of defense in free agency and draft. Once we get that defense in the same ballpark as our offense, watch out. Going to be a fun dozen years for Cowboys football
