At what point does the head coach go to the DC to make changes during a game?

I understand his duties as a head coach, but coordinators are supposed to work independently without constant oversight, that’s what delegation is. It’s no different than a corporation; you can’t have your hands in everything. You rely on your management team and all the departments to do their jobs.

So, tell me, where did he fail to do this? Show me where he didn’t.

I think that’s the disconnect between some people here and the real world, you don’t know what happened behind the scenes, and it’s none of our business. They handle these matters professionally, without embarrassing each other. This isn’t 80s or 90s football, when players were pushed, arguments broke out, and coaches fought in front of everyone, humiliating their players.

Many teams now keep things private because they’re paying these adults like millionaires, and they have the right to private conversations. Still, with the saturation of social media, every little thing eventually gets out.

Most of this should be kept in-house, and we shouldn’t hear about him giving advice or having a talk with Parker or anyone else on the team. That’s between them, and it should stay that way, no one needs to feel embarrassed.

I’m sure they’re under a lot of pressure and they understand their mistakes. You don’t know that he didn’t talk to him at halftime or during the game when a lot was going on; maybe the cameras just didn’t catch it. Assuming he didn’t because the issue wasn’t fixed isn’t fair—maybe the players just couldn’t get their assignments right, and it had nothing to do with the coaches. It’s on the players, and I’m sure they all feel some accountability and are trying to get it right. Sometimes you just don’t have the personnel to run your scheme, and they’re working on it.

It's under construction..lol

You know ,a work in progress,

I think Parker's truly as shocked as most but there was just some busted assignments they have to figure out if he got the depth chart right he probably didn't he needs to know whether he needs to take some reps away from the original number ones and make them number twos and vice versa who gets more playing time that is going to be worked out by hopefully Game 4 or 5 we will know where the true holds and the problems are with this team and whether it's coaching or not.

That's my gut feeling is when they looked at the roster they made up the depth chart and they don't want to do any major reshuffling but they are taking hard looks at all that film and finding out who would be better fit for certain game plans and when they're calling out the defensive alignments who might be better than the ones they chose before game 1..

I remember a time when a lot of people around here said that Jerry talks too much that the coaches reveal too much they don't keep enough under their shirt but maybe it's fine that way I don't think we need to know everything Ranch.. I want to make an assumption that they are working hard to do this and that even during the game some things were said and that's all you can do that is why you have to have such a huge coaching staff is because there is no way that the head coach can have his hands and everything personally..
1,2,3, and we are off!

We saw how bad things were, at what point during the game would it have been right for shotty to go to Parker and say hey, let's make some adjustments? Or does he fill the need to let him learn on his own? How should this be approached??
He shouldn't have to IF he's hired a competent and experienced DC.

Cmon...if coordinators work independently, why have a HC? You think Jimmy, Parcells, Belichick and the like stood by with a finger up their azz while a coordinator was in trouble? Or do you think they pulled them aside and helped him? If you do, then there's no point. Someone i know coached in the Azteca Bowl, Hal Mumme, was the HC, he went to the DC and pointed out some receiver tells to the DC, during the game. Couple of years later, he was DC and he went to the HC, Noel Mazzone and OC Les Koenig late in the game and told them what the opponents defense was doing, in trying to get the ball back. It's not personal and they are football coaches with NFL pedigree and didn't care that my acquaintance had been a HS coach. Football is Football and they appreciated the help
We all had a laugh about it after the game. Look them up, if you don't recognize the names. I get what you're saying, but that's not the way it works. Coaching is a team effort and most coaches welcome the input from someone they trust. It also takes some of the pressure off when the HC butts in

To be fair, it’s the 4th DC in as many years. In terms of personnel, two thirds of the defense is different from last year, plus the unit had no reps at all during the preseason. Glitches had to be expected. The thing I was mostly mad about was not making any adjustments to having wide open backs in the flat all night

that lack of awareness actually frightened me

No I think we said limited input once the game starts I find it very unnecessary to micromanage when you're supposed to trust your staff... Y'all are blowing this all apart because you're assuming that he had no input he said nothing to his defensive staff during the game or at halftime you all are making this stuff up and you are making it worse because you are assuming a lot and you know what they said about assuming..

It's not micromanage. Believe me, any coordinator with thin skin like what you describe, doesn't last long. So, I suppose a coordinator shouldn't tell his assistants what to do and the coaches in general shouldn't tell the players what to do...i mean, they're professional and should know what to do.
I'm saying that a young HC will find it very difficult to help his DC, when he's busy with the offense. Some say it quietly, others don't care about touchy feelings guys and let them hear it, when He finds it necessary. This isn't an office workspace, this is football. No room for pansies. These coaches don't need or ask to be coddled. They dropped their pair, a long time ago. Just part of the job. Towards the end of career, I was director of schools. I spoke with my staff totally different than I spoke to my football staff.

It feels like we’re missing some communication here, and we’re just not on the same page, so maybe we’ll have to agree to disagree. I’m saying he probably did these things, and you’re assuming he didn’t, which I don’t like because you don’t know what goes on in the locker room or behind the scenes. The head coach’s responsibilities are to make the big decisions, oversee everything during the week, and handle the practices, but once you’re on the field and the game clock starts, he has his own in-game decisions to focus on. He doesn’t need to manage his other assistants, especially his coordinator, whose job is to manage his own staff.

During the game, there’s really no practical time for him to sit and micromanage his people. A passing glance, a quick note, or a bit of advice almost certainly happened—probably at halftime and likely multiple times on the sideline without anyone noticing. That’s just how they operate, and they’re not going to share exactly what was said because that’s proprietary information within the team.

I’ll say it again,

assuming this didn’t happen is ridiculous.

To think Brian Schottenheimer wouldn’t take time, whether at halftime, during the week, or in film sessions, to share his thoughts on the last game and the one ahead is unrealistic. But in the middle of a game, there’s simply not enough time. That’s why you have 30 people on the sideline, coaches, trainers, assistants, handling various responsibilities. There’s too much going on to micromanage everything, no matter if you’re the offensive coordinator or not.

All I’m saying is that he has the time during the week, in pregame practices and film rooms, to address what he thinks needs changing or to share his thoughts on other things going forward. But once kickoff happens, it’s impossible for him to be on top of someone all game, that’s why you hire an entire staff.

You are belittling me by asking why they need a head coach misses the point. During the week, in film sessions, and during the game, he’s making the bigger decisions.

People are questioning the early 4th-and-inches call, but I still think it was the right decision.

It was too early in the game to take that kind of risk.

There are moments when taking a gamble like that makes sense or is necessary, and those are the calls he has to make. Everyone’s still upset, but it’s time to focus on the Commanders and see if progress is happening.

He’ll be here through the end of the year, so let’s wait until all 17 games are played and, just like the coaching staff evaluates the players, we can judge him then. If changes are needed, maybe Jerry will make them.

It didn’t look like it was a scheme issue the players just sucked and looked lazy. Maybe that’s what Zimmer and Eberflus issue was too.
Agreed what type of adjustment do you make so Pickens doesn't drop the ball when it's right in his hands.

What adjustment makes javonte Williams not get a stupid taunting penalty

Why should you have to tell a 10-year veteran quarterback not to throw into double coverage and either hit Ferguson at the first down marker or throw it out of bounds all the way out of bounds.

These coaches are in over their head but the players aren't doing them any favors either

I'm not calling for him to be fired. Im addressing those that say Parker was hired to coach the defense and that the HC should leave him alone and let him do his job, which is ridiculous, because the HC was hired to win and he has the right to butt in, whenever and wherever he sees fit.

And I never once said that I didn't say leave him alone but I'm saying there would be very limited communication during a game and that you shouldn't be micromanaging your DC to a point where you're constantly over there losing focus trying to do his job as well that is why you delegate I never said you'd leave him alone I just stated what I think is a very accurate description of what happens during the week in film rooms and stuff but you can't really do it during a game because there's not enough time to make wholesale changes to a game plan and you know that too these are alleged adjustments that can be made Sometimes you just gotta roll with what you're brung..

Yes there are ways to make subtle changes in a game and you know something's not working or things that are working you can do it more just like the giant saw they could just have the flats all day and just kept doing it Yes that needs to be changed It will be changed I hope at least for the better maybe there's less of those but it is the NFL you're playing NFL players there are players on the other side that can make plays and there are coaches on the other side that can make adjustments as well I mean people keep forgetting that this is a two way street that anytime you overcorrect the league's already saw it and corrected the other way and you may be beat now over the top with a bunch of plays now when you suck your players all down into the zone into the flats lookout because Washington might not run much at all in the first half and they could be throwing bombs..

That's just my little opinion.. Again I never said he should be left totally alone I'm talking about mostly the in game adjustments that is what this stated maybe we get lost in this but look at the thread subject line it says at what point does a head coach go to the DC to make changes during a game i'm saying in a game it's almost too late you can make subtle comments and a little advice in passing at halftime but most of the groups are split up, And they have to be trusted to be able to do their jobs because once you're opening up the game plan during the game it is very difficult to make changes like that but to say he didn't and assume that he hadn't said anything during the game ridiculous to me that people think that..

I'm sure the person who made this thread likes to make giant assumptions like that like Brian Schottenheimer doesn't have the bones to go over until Christian Parker that he don't like something and it needs to change..

It’s definitely a need to win, but I’m not sure it’s a must
:hammer:Correct it'll be a much tougher road ahead but it doesn't mean it's over but people around here will make it over I mean some of them already said it's over for Parker after game one I mean there's some really ridiculous fans we have..

Schottenheimer doesn't have time to micromanage. And, if it makes a difference between winning and losing, do whatever it takes, without worrying about what others will think. Call it micromanaging, i call it coaching as a team. At the end of the day, a good HC doesn't worry about feelings and a good assistant doesn't either. They have the same goal in mind. One day Parker may be a HC, I guarantee he'll be in his DCs ear, throughout the week and throughout the game. Seen it all my life, hasn't changed in 50 years. Okay, I agree to disagree, enjoy the game and Go Cowboys.

Yep. Hard to decipher if it’s the players or the coach’s so I’m just gonna assume it’s both. Or it was last week anyway.

Again, no...it's not undermining, it's coaching. Its not personal and it's not meant for thin skinned individuals. Its winning and it's job security. If je can help win, he needs to do his job and not worry aboit feelings getting hurt
Your way is one size fits all. It was easier to be that way back in the day. But unfortunately our society has changed and you really have to take each person and treat them differently. Some can take it and some get butt hurt too easily.

Sadly we will have to get used to it, NYG have a real and really serious HC now…
It was one game. Look around the rest of the league in week one. NY could easily come back down to earth when not playing a sieve like the Dallas D.
