MM, or whomever the Special Teams shot caller is, has already deferred on two 71 yarders earlier this year.

If I am not mistaken, they decided to punt in a Dome Stadium with nothing to lose by going for the FG. I want to say both opportunities were in good conditions and choosing to take the FG, good or bad, had no serious implications on the games outcome.

I can kind of understand not wanting to give the other team the ball at our 47 yard line if things were high stakes...but the two opportunities they have passed on didnt seem to be big deals at all.

Wonder why they took the rain check those two time.

How far is the current FG record?
Longest field goals in NFL history
  • 66 yards — Justin Tucker, Ravens (2021)
  • 65 yards — Brandon Aubrey, Cowboys (2024)
  • 64 yards — Matt Prater, Denver Broncos (2013)
  • 63 yards – Brett Maher, Cowboys (2019)
  • 63 yards – Graham Gano, Carolina Panthers (2018)
  • 63 yards – David Akers, San Francisco 49ers (2012)

Ok, so the current FG record is 66 yards.

Aubrey made a 65 yarder during Week 3 of this 2024 season when the Cowboys played the Ravens.

During Week 1, Aubrey made a 66 yarder to tie the NFL record, but the Cowboys were penalized for 'delay of game'. Aubrey had made that 66 yarder with at least 5 yards to spare, so he is correct to assume he could make a 72 yarder...

One thing to keep in mind is that kickers test their distance limit inside the stadium before every game.

When he says, "72 yards" he is referring to his maximum kick distance if everything is perfect.

The weather can be a little more or less humid, the temperature can be warmer or colder, etc. and that will impact the football and the potential distance.

That is why kickers test their distance limits right before the games so the team knows the probability statistics of various ranges for that specific game in that specific stadium situation.

My guess is that in those games where they turned down opportunities to attempt long field goals his maximum kick distance pre-game was less than those distances or at least less accurate at those distances.

My math was wrong. You would be giving the ball back to your opponent on your own 38 yard line.

Its risky.

Your opponent is already in FG territory.

Do it at the end of a half or while already getting blown out.

I'd be delirious to see a 70 yarder -- that 72 yarder could easily wait for another day!

When a 67 yarder will break the all-time NFL record, no need to be that greedy, right? ;)

I need this attempt in my life. In a wasted season, I need the 70-yard attempt.
Agreed. If the Cowboys aren't going to give us anything else this year, give us this.
