It's the NFL - players are bigger, faster, and stronger, and players miss games.

You don't draft a player just in case someone on your roster misses a few games with an injury. That's how you get into trouble and ignore things like the offensive and defensive lines, the crux of success in the NFL.

If Tre Mason falls there too, I absolutely take him, but I don't go out of my way trying to get him if there's a top tier DT or DE on the board waiting.

An excerpt from the following article:

Tre Mason just capped off a season in which he was an out-of-nowhere Heisman finalist and rushed for a combined 499 yards in the SEC championship and the BCS Championship. And at 2 p.m. ET on Thursday, he declared for the 2014 NFL draft. The Auburn running back said he received a third round grade from the NFL Draft Advisory Board.

this guy reminds me of Marshawn Lynch...you guys can pick me apart about how horrible that comparison is for this reason and that, but when I see the guy run I just think "Beast Mode"

Either that or MJD. Just impossible to tackle.

I'll be glad when the term "beast mode" goes away.

They had a 1st round grade on LeSean McCoy in 2009, but passed on him in the 2nd because they already had Felix and Barber.

If they had huge DL needs that year, they could have said "We have to get DL and we're going to take Everett Brown" and pass on McCoy.

The problem there is that Wade was married to the idea of the tandem of Barber and Felix. And in 2009 why wouldn't you be? Marion Barber had just come off really solid 2007 and 2008 campaigns, and Felix Jones had 8.1 ypc in college and was also a home run threat every time he touched the ball.

McCoy wouldn't have ended up succeeding in Dallas anyway with the offensive line we trotted out there every week. Funny how those things work out.

Edit: we also didn't have a first round pick in 2009...Roy E. Williams trade...

Personally, I would take him 2nd round all day if the D is helped in the 1st. In fact, you give me a DT in the 1st and a Safety in the 3rd, I would trade off a 4th just to move up in the 2nd and assure he's wearing a star. Aaron Donald and Tre Mason are my two must haves this year, and I don't think we really need a RB!! Just too much of a special talent to pass up.

McCoy was a 2nd round pick. He was available with the Cowboys 2nd round pick but they traded it away.

I'm just saying, keep in mind previous years when looking at the current draft. When you look back at previous drafts, you just wish that they had taken the player that turned out great, but rarely do you look back and say, I wish they would have taken position X in that draft.

People wished we took OT or OG in the draft year after year.

I'm just saying -- RB wasn't a glaring hole. If the reincarnation of Too Tall Jones was sitting there with our pick but we had a first round grade on a TE so we took the TE, with this defensive line, I think we'd be pretty upset as a fan base.

If we address DT or DE in the first round, and Tre Mason is within reach in the 2nd round, not only do I trade up a few spots to get him, I send Phillip Tanner, Joseph Randle and yeah even Lance Dunbar to whatever team is willing to have them for whatever in return.

My point, though, is that Tre Mason won't help us pressure opposing QBs, sack QBs, stop the run, or alleviate our DBs from playing a 7 on 7 drill on Sundays. The defensive front HAS to be addressed.

That example does not fail because of BPA philosophy, it fails because they should have had a 1st round grade on the Too Tall clone.

These people are human beings, though. Your premise assumes they're drafting in a vacuum.

My only premise if that if you have a player rated a round higher than all remaining players that you should probably take him.

I don't disagree at all. I'm just saying, that doesn't happen all the time. And sometimes it shouldn't happen, especially if you can't trade away the player at the same position.

That would be like New England sitting there with Andrew Luck rated higher than a DT, an area of need. Do you really think with Tom Brady on the roster they draft Andrew Luck just because he's higher rated than Joe Passrusher?

Its crazy how a decade ago, Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams go in the top 5 of the draft and now Tre Mason is a 2nd rounder.

Things really have changed. Now you have guys like Ponder, Locker and Gabbert drafted in the 1st round. A decade ago they probably would have lasted until the 2nd at least.

Very true, Ill throw Tannehill in there, im sure there are others too.

I guess Richardson was taken pretty early. He isn't exactly helping the case for drafting rbs early tho. Spiller was top ten, and then McFadden was top 5. So every other year or so it seems there is a rb worthy of top ten.

some semi interesting stuff...

The last rb taken 1st overall was in 1995, Ki-jana Carter
in 2005 and 2006 Ronnie brown and Reggie bush were taken 2nd overall
