Stating that the team will finish 9-7 or above demonstates that person believes that the team will finish with a winning record. [EDIT] In essense, an 8-8 finish would be a great prediction for someone solely predicting a 7-9 finish, but it is a terrible prediction should the team finish 9-7 or above.
Granted, nothing is for certain. The team could finish 8-8. It could finish 13-3. It could finish 12-4, 11-5, 10-6 or 9-7. What will eventually happen is destined to someday become reality and that's always a totally separate topic. When someone makes a prediction, it's only what he or she believes will happen that is questionable or debatable.
One last note: making an all-inclusive prediction that a team will finish just above .500 AND at AND just below .500 basically means you don't feel that the team will not finish above .500, but that you are hedging your bets just in case they do end up with a winning record.
I need to go lie down for a while.
