Audio: JJT says Romo and Newman are not stars

When TNew's healthy, he's a top notch corner.

Romo is a star, no matter what anyone says.

Newman was great in his prime, but it's hard to argue that he's still in his prime nowadays.

His prime didn't last very long since he was 25 when he came in the league.

Whats funny though is i've seen so many of the NFL's "Best Corners" go through what Newman has gone through this year and its not a big deal.

But Newman has been so good that when you actually see him struggle for any consistent period of time everyone starts bashing him and saying he isn't as good anymore.

Maybe he is on the decline or maybe he just hasn't had a good start to the season.

We'll find out. Its a long season. But its to early in the season to say he does or doesn't have it anymore.

I don't get the criticism of Newman. People say Revis is the best corner or one of the best in the league yet he gets beat deep as well. I think people are under this crazy impression that corners NEVER get beat. It happens. Especially in the NFL that's become a pass friendly league. For the life of me I will never understand the expectations we have of corners especially on this league. IF you don't have the playmaker safety and the pass rush I don't care if you have Deion and Rod in their prime back there you're going to get beat at times. I judge corners on how much they do for this team. Or if they cost us. Jenkins and Newman haven't cost us.

People are just losing their minds when it comes to the Cowboys. Yea we need to come the fact that maybe this team isn't as good as we feel they are. But let's don't get carried away. Newman is still a solid corner in this league and Romo is still one of the best qb's in this league.

Newman has never been a top ten corner, maybe a top 25/30

Champ Bailey says hes top 5. 3 years ago newman was dang good.

Maybe not a lot of picks, but he wasnt getting beat either.

I think if someone were to ask JJT what a "star" is, his instinct would be to reply by listing a few people he deems "stars."

Since that isn't really the answer to the question, the next question a rational person would ask is, "but what makes those "stars" "stars."" I'm sure he would then reply by saying something akin to, "well if they're in the top 5 at their position, they are a star."

Which leads us to the next question a rational person would be led to ask, "what is it that constitutes being in the top 5 at one's position." Or, in short, "by what criteria are we ranking these players?" Presumably he would then not have a very compelling answer, as players are often "ranked" on a whim. And I believe this is especially true in regards to Newman, as the statistics that matter most in judging a cornerback are not statistics that are officially recorded by the NFL.

So basically what I'm saying is that the word "star" in this context is essentially meaningless, and therefore what JJT said in regards to Romo and Newman is meaningless.

I don't know what we would do without JJT "telling us what the facts mean."

I like JJT's columns. They're best when put to use to start camp fires.

You are being nice. I keep his columns in the john....for emergency use only, of course.

oh he'd tell you it's just his opinion, but hey - it's a fact. : )

he's probably reading all this now giggling at how we're talking about him. his job is done. : )

JJT is not a professional journalist....

Just a hack trying to build his name up enough to make it on TV one day.

You got the hack part right. There is 1 decent columnist in Dallas - Cowlishaw.

There is 1 decent beat writer in Dallas - Archer.

Colishaw, is just like all the rest of the Dallas media maggots.

I don't care if they're stars or not. I just want them to play well and win games..

Exactly. It's not like whether the media considered someone to be a star or not affects the win-loss column.

and we have a winner

well I for one agree with JTT. They're not stars anymore. We love them and wish they could regain that star status but in reality their play is not elite anymore. they're pretty good, but not elite-all pro level at this point in time. but hey, pretty good is pretty good. there's no shame in being pretty good.

Hey JJT... Newman and Romo would be 5-0 if not for Penalties and off the wall turnovers.

You can complain about anything you want JJT and blame WR's not getting open or any other crap you wanna spew.

But in reality its all about penalties and turnovers for this team.

Anything else is gossip.

Romo was part of those turnovers in the Giants loss and Newman got beat in crunch time in the Denver loss.
