Audio: JJT says Romo and Newman are not stars

Romo was part of those turnovers in the Giants loss and Newman got beat in crunch time in the Denver loss.

And...?

There never in the position they were in if not for boneheaded turnovers. I could understand a DB making a great play on the ball or something. But Romo's turnovers were direct passes to the DB.

Something a top notch pro bowl QB has no business doing.

Dallas isn't losing because other teams are bringing the smackdown. Especially in the Giants game.

I give the Broncos a little more credit for their W against us but we gave the Giants the game after shoving the ball down their throat.

People can debate if Romo is a star or not..........

Just keep in mind we win maybe 3 games this year without Romo....just saying.

With Peyton Manning we are 16-0

Cool trick after 5 weeks. How do we do that? I mean, I know he's good, but that is amazing.

Who really cares what these dudes say, seriously................

Depends on what JJT's definition of a star is.

If "Star" means you are very recognizable to most in the general public, Tony Romo is a Star, but not so much Terence Newman.

If "Star" means one of the best at your position, I just don't pay enough attention to every Quarterback and Cornerback to know exactly where both players fit in.

If you went by this season alone, I don't think Tony Romo is one of the top 5 Quarterbacks in the NFL.

I think Terence Newman is a good football player but I think he has been a bit overrated.

We are not 3-2.... you disagree?

and? what does that have to do with the mushroom induced "we're 16-0 with peyton" drivel?

nice diversion attempt, but please stay on current topic.

Just last week, JJT criticized Romo because he didn't talk to the media every Wednesday like a "star player" should.

No Tony Romo in locker room

Since he became a starting quarterback, Tony Romo has spoken to the media every Wednesday from 12-12:15 pm except on rare occassions.

This is common NFL procedure for star players.
They pick a day - the same day throughout the season - and that's the day they talk, which means they only have to deal with the local media once a week.

Troy Aikman talked on Mondays. Emmitt Smith on Thursdays. Michael Irvin on Fridays.

Do you notice a trend?

Romo talked on Wednesday the first two games of this season. Then after a raggedy performance against the Giants he didn't talk until Friday.

Last week, he talked on Thursday. Since he didn't talk today, I assume that means he'll start talking on Thursdays.

As a columnist, I write my opinion. Sometimes, I use quotes; other times, I don't. A lot of times I'll just listen to players answer questions to get a vibe from the team.

So it really doesn't affect me or bother me when Romo doesn't talk, but it does make me wonder if he's feeling the pressure. It makes me wonder why he's varying his routine.

The first thing you learn as a beat reporter is that everything happens for a reason. Sometimes, the reason is important and sometimes it's significant.

The point: There's a reason Romo no longer talks on Wednesdays.

As a quarterback, you're the face of the franchise which is why you should talk.

Besides, it's easy to use the media to communicate with teammates as well as opponents. More important, Romo should use the media to talk to the fans.

i'm tired of JJT playing the victim.

first thing i notice about beat reporters is they give themselves too much credit.

what i notice about JJT is we give the court jester more credit than he deserves.

i could outwrite him with 1 hand and a cucumber.

Nobody is looking to "cut Newman" It's a harsh reality of how he has digressed in the last few years, he can't stay healthy, his tackling is bad at best, and he seems to have forgotten just how to play the corner position.

No one, or at least not I, wants to cut him. I still think he can play, but his ability hasn't been top notch .

I think he would even agree. Don't get so defensive about T New. There are other issues on this team that need to be corrected that are far more important than Newman getting beat on occasion, like penalties, play calling, and tackling.

Not getting defensive...

Everyone says he was never elite, and will never be a star, so we might as well let him go now, wont be a big loss, since he will never get better right? So why waste time with a guy like him

Might as well Duke it out with Jenkins and Scandrick....the D will be that much better

I don't get the criticism of Newman. People say Revis is the best corner or one of the best in the league yet he gets beat deep as well. I think people are under this crazy impression that corners NEVER get beat. It happens. Especially in the NFL that's become a pass friendly league. For the life of me I will never understand the expectations we have of corners especially on this league. IF you don't have the playmaker safety and the pass rush I don't care if you have Deion and Rod in their prime back there you're going to get beat at times. I judge corners on how much they do for this team. Or if they cost us. Jenkins and Newman haven't cost us.

People are just losing their minds when it comes to the Cowboys. Yea we need to come the fact that maybe this team isn't as good as we feel they are. But let's don't get carried away. Newman is still a solid corner in this league and Romo is still one of the best qb's in this league.

they wont listen.....

everything is jump, and then ask questions later, its best too just agree, therefore they have no audience

when it comes to this team..or this fan base, you have to be perfect...Ware was inches from being under the bus completely last week, his legs were already under.

it will never change, Fans will cry about a player, until they are gone, and when they are gone due to injury, or being Cut..thats when reality hits home

This board is full of pansy *** men...the type to treat a girl like ****, and then when she finally decides to up and leave for good, it nothing but tears and "I'm sorry, i didn't know any better, you were the best thing for me!"

you can show most people this board, take the names away, and the fact its a football forum, just by reading posts, they will think its a Forum for teenage girls...my Friend who i showed this board too, almost thinks this way

I agree its ridiculous. I love football. I love listening to sports radio. But its hard as hell to listen to Sports radio in Dallas right now. Its just too difficult. Its doom and gloom. You would think the Cowboys would be 1-15. So you find different means of sports talk like a message board like this and the board is fine and the moderators do a good job but some of the fans on here.....I'm not even sure if they are even fans. I'm not sure if they're NFC East fans of other teams and are just trying to stirring us up by posing as Cowboy fans or what. You see the same stupid nonsense over and over again. "Trade Barber", "We need a new QB", "Fire Wade", "Fire Red Jesus".......I mean let's sit here and face FACTS. Fact is the Giants are one of the best teams in football. Then ask yourself did you feel threatened by the Giants in our earlier meeting this year? Did you feel that the Giants were just in a different league than the Cowboys? Or were you like me and came away from that game feeling like the Cowboys could compete and even win barring a fluke four turnover performance by Romo? Or hell even compete with them with a 4 turnover performance by Romo because they had a lead in closing minutes? That's what the media doesn't tell you.

All of these doom and gloom guys? They ignore the fact the Cowboys competed with both the Bronco's and Giants and they lost. Its that simple. The season is by no means over. Fans need to get a grip. By all means you have the right to cheer or grieve as much as you want as a fan but let's remember this is the 5th week of the season.

I for one am excited. It doesn't matter what the Cowboys did these first 5 games. With these stretch of games coming up? If the Cowboys make the post season? They have earned it and I'd rather them be 3-2 with their backs against the walls in a way than be 5-0 and are able to stink in December once again. You gotta come out of December with a winning record this year or no playoffs. If the Cowboys are up for the task its going to be a great season.

Yea a fool would take Asante Samuel over Terrence Newman. Asante Samuel is a cornerback that benefited tremendously from the Pats zone coverage. HE hasn't been nearly as good in Philly. If Terrence Newman is a bum than Ashanti Samuel is a notch below whatever that is.

I agree bro!

and no, only a person who looks at names/watches espn and its highlights would want Asante over Newman

Newman gives up passes, ok...so do all corners

i dont see jet fans jumping ship because Ginn toasted Revis super bad last week, Newman hasn't even got beat that bad

my friend who read this board said we overreact way to much and cry like girls..and hes a Steeler fan

Newman hasn't lost a step. He's had a few plays go against him in man coverage. If you play long enough, it will happen. Brandon Marshall grabbed his left shoulder pad and yanked him back. That allowed Marshall to get ahead of him, and Newman didn't get his best jump due to playing catch up. That could have been called on Marshall. There was the one play at the end of the half against Tampa Bay where he kind of slowed down and that guy dove and caught that one ball, but Philliips should have used the safeties to protect the CBs at the end of the half. The guy missed the FG, anyway. Nothing hurt but your pride there. The Giants game was tough. Newman put it all over Steve Smith, again. He made a great jump on the ball at KC, but the ground is hard as a rock there. When he hit the ground, it came out.

The defense started dominating last year when Newman came back healthy. It's funny how some people forget.

Newman is an elite player, and Tony Romo is, too.
