B Broaddus said it best, Cowboys not practicing in pads enough!

I honestly think stuff like this is just an excuse. In the 80's and early 90's nobody ran easier training camps than the Niners under Walsh and Seifert, and they didnt perform like we did this preseason.

dbair, thats the point im trying to make about wade and the dallas cowboys players, when you treat them soft, they dont learn, or pay attention in practice, but when they are in pads, hitting they learn.

so, doesnt it make sense, to work them instead, till they get the point, when u give them a bone in practice by wearing shorts, etc,,, then they had better pay attention and learn.

Hostile;3520303 said:

Bottom line is, you wear your team out, they won't perform, whether it be now or during the season. And yes, players need days off, no matter what they're doing. Okay, going in shorts doesn't exactly drain you physically, but it's still a day where you have to go to work. We all need days off, to get away from work or school, give our brains and bodies a rest. Sitting in class as a student isn't physically demanding, yet if you did it seven days a week for five weeks straight, you'd be dying for a day off, especially if you knew you had another four to five months of this staring you in the face.

If you're looking for someone to blame, blame Jerry. He's the one taking his team all over the country trying to market them. He's the one scheduling consecutive two-a-days on weekends trying to sell more t-shirts. And at this point, I'll bet everyone is worn out, from the players to the coaches, to the trainers and managers.

I think it's a matter of quality over quantity. Did we really need 12 two-a-days? Or did we need fewer practices that were maybe a little longer and more focused or intense or physical? Were there any times during these practices where the Cowboys just got to have fun?

It seemed like a contradiction of sorts. Practice more, with the idea of getting better, but not go as hard. I assume that was to try to avoid injury and burnout. Didn't really seem to work. I just know this team wants really nothing to do with the preseason anymore. Hopefully, a couple of weeks in Dallas, in their homes and in their beds, and they'll get past it and turn it on in the regular season.

thats the point im trying to make, you have to know your team,what they can do and cant do, and you have to back off when their legs are tired, by having a day off. Not, out there in shorts, working, but a day off to get their legs back. This all should have been worked out during OTAs.

I do agree about the part with jerry jones. We all know how he will make an extra buck showing the players off, selling socks, etc...

But the head coach has to put his foot down, and say, this is my team, they need a rest, or when he sees the team is playing sloppy in practice in shorts, then the head coach has to see that just doesnt work with these type of players and work them more in pads. Then give them a day off after 2 days in pads etc. then back to pads

You cant with these players, let them have a full week in shorts, practicing, because these dallas cowboys players dont appreciate it, and try to learn, they just dont get it, you have to work them.

I would like to know where you got your degree in physical fitness training? Then I want to know where you saw any article saying they spent a week in shorts during this camp.

When, wade gives them all this time off in shorts, its like being at a candy store for the players, because to some of them, its dont worry, just enjoy yourself, wade wont do nothing, so dont worry if you mess up or not paying attention.

I don't see this at all. Why were so many saying it was the hardest camp they'd ever done?

the main problem that i see with wade and the players, wade wants to be buddy buddy with the players, a family type style, where wade is pappa, but wade doesnt want to carry the big stick on the players when he should. You cant do that as a head coach, you have to carry the big stick when you have to and get on the players, not coddle them, like wade did last week in oxnard.
Like when Crayton was saying he asked Wade if he'd take it easier on them and Wade just winked and didn't change a thing? :cool: The vid is on DC.com.

And I'm almost certain they practiced in pads this week. I think it was Wednesday in the second practice. Broaddus was the one saying they were doing good work in that practice and looked sharp.

Really, if anything about this camp is "off", I think elcowboi hit it. It almost seemed like there was a focus from Jerry on getting maximum attendance ($$$ for drinks, caps, shirts), not on best football preparation.

It was kind of telling to me what Mosley was saying when Jerry had his Skyy Bar party and he put his arm around him... "Matt, you see that skyline? That's LA. This is where the Cowboys belong!"

Ugh.

its hard for the players, because they didnt get any days off, either every day they were in pads or in shorts.

a guy posted an article that everyone needs a day off, to even just get away and get some rest, etc...

just like someone posted about where parcells saw when players legs were dead, parcells would back off, and let players rest for a day

i agree with that, you have to let the players recoup and get fresh legs

and i agree when someone posted where jerry jones was making money off of players at cowboys stadium on a saturday or whatever

i agree some of this lays at jerry jones door, but at same time, wade is the head coach,, he has to call the shots too and see when his players need rest, a day off to give them that, and wade has to see working the players in shorts, isnt working, the players practice better in pads, but not in shorts, just not getting the job done in shorts,

Wade Phillips pointed to fatigue last week, offering it as an excuse for the starters' sorry effort in San Diego. He responded by basically making the final week of camp an all-expenses paid resort vacation. The Cowboys hardly wore shoulder pads the last week in Oxnard, and contact was limited even when they did.

broaddus says this in his article....

*Tuesday was the first day that the Cowboys had practiced in pads since last Wednesday. After two straight practices of hats and jerseys, it was nice to see them working in helmets and shoulder pads.

CowboyJoe then says see, they werent in pads all week.

dadgum CowJoe, make up your mind ! did they or did they not practice in pads ?
if you want me to get as riled up as you, then you are going to have to make sense in what you are saying...works too hard, doesnt work hard enough, pads, no pads, didnt work hard enough when had pads on, should have given them a day off.

i think you might need a day off, its up to you whether you wanna wear pads or not.:cool:

regrssing each week could also be an indicator that the team is sick and tired of camp and that focus is starting to go.

The texans spent last week practicing in houston, no traveling or anything just focused on getting better from the saints game, in which by the way they were manhandled.

Being at home and having two weeks to get rejuvanated I imagine is the exact thing this team needs.

No the Texans do their entire training camp in Houston in that Met life bubble

lol buddy, i think the cowboys need a more mixture of pads and shorts
at least 2 days in pads, and 2 days in shorts, and one day rest, and half day walkthrough

do you all know that for one pratice the cowboys had the players practice like in hotel parking lot before they left for houston game, how can u do an elite job in practice on a parking lot for gosh sakes?

again, read my lips, just like broaddus said, when in pads, the cowboys look good, but when in shorts, they look sloopy

you can pay attention to detail all you want, but when you mostly work in shorts, and players are not paying attention, practice is sloppy, just makes common sense to practice more in pads, because when the dallas cowboys players are given a bone by wade to practice in shorts and not work hard in pads, the players dont step up to the plate

just like randy white said, when you dont tackle in practice and work in pads, you develop bad habits in an actual game

geez guys, does it take a baseball bat to hit you over the head;

how many times did we see romo call something and players say what? and look confused

when your doing that in practice in shorts and walkthrough, your not doing it a game speed like in pads, so players are slower to react, and with their developing bad habits in practice due to sloppy play in shorts, it shows to me on the field like last saturday night

just like you have an all pro center in gurode that low snapped the ball, and missed one key block on a blitz

thats sloopy play

just like was reported that the cowboys didnt practice with crowd noise, hardly at all, and what happened, even romo said that their should be a signal that the players have, for that crowd noise

was a sloppy game by the players and coaches, players werent ready for this game and coaches werent ready

when your starting QB has to say, we will be in loud stadiums with noise and we will have to be ready, that should have been worked out before this happened

just like last year, good ole wade waited, didnt run enough blitz run packages to get our defense ready, so we had to fix that after tampa bay game, then we missed time on pass coverages against giants in practice, due to wade not doing his job, and we lost to the giants first game of the season

if you think im going to sugar coat that for wade, no way;

its time that the head coach of this team does his job and see that the players and coaches are prepared and ready, not wait for jerry jones to tell him we have to fix the kicker situation like jerry jones had to do last year

Head coach is doing his job, one day he is too hard on them and injuries start creeping in so you guys complain next day they are in shorts and he is too easy on them. it is easy for former players to tell you how much harder they had it but that does not make it true. I went to every training camp Dallas held in Austin with Jimmy Johnson and he did not have guys tackling Irvin and Emmitt he did not risk them defense made contact they let go.

Let me make it very plain for you;

BTB: But we can't really wash away the stink that was the Cowboys on Saturday night. Not being ready to play in their supposed dress rehearsal - the sloppy ball-handling, the missed tackles, the inability to get in and out of the huddle in proper formations - all of this suggests that Dallas has plenty of work to do between now and the season opener. It's been a long training camp and the fact they had just broken camp was a factor, but let's not use it as an excuse. This was a poor display of professional football, and the team knows it. So bad, in fact, that there are suggestions the regulars may play in the final pre-season game against the Dolphins.

Most worrisome has been the Cowboys inability to assemble anything that resembles a running game. Sure, they were playing with a makeshift line, but in the NFL injuries happen. The Cowboys ground game has ground to a halt. They've become one-dimensional in the pre-season and that hasn't been good for Tony Romo's health. The Texans front seven spent some quality time with Romo, grabbing a few sacks and knocking him down to the point were getting him out of the game was becoming a decision of medical importance. About the only bright spot offensively was that Roy Williams actually got involved in the game and caught some passes.

The Cowboys offense played hot potato with the football, a mis-communication on a pitch play to Felix Jones wiped out one of their only good drives of the night, Romo also had to scoop up a bad snap and later put the ball on the turf when Dallas was making another charge for the endzone. That series was ultimately snuffed by a tipped pass that turned into a Texans interception. Given the injuries on the offensive line, it would be easy to put the blame on the replacements. But Andre Gurode gave up a sack on a straight rush, Doug Free picked up a holding penalty that was declined, and the line blew the blocking assignments on several blitzes.

In short, the Cowboys offense was simply horrendous. Only a Jon Kitna to Kevin Ogletree touchdown late in the game saved them from a total embarrassment.

so in other words, just like b broaddus said, the cowboys played just like they have practiced in shorts, sloppy. and i will not sugar coat that; wade is also to blame for not letting the players have one day rest before that game, just like last year, wade grumbled when was mentioned to him that when demarcus ware was a force, after he got some rest that week, with having fresh legs,, im sure we all saw how fresh ware was, but wade grumbled, about not wanting to let ware rest somewhat, due to ware being his best defender,

do you all remember when wade pulled first string defense, but if u looked at the game, ware was still out there some;
butler and brandon williams need some game experience, and that game was over after first half, we all could see that

These guys just came off the most physically draining camp they've had in Wade Phillips tenure and they need to be in pads more?

Ridiculous.

again its my viewpoint, but at same time, you cant do that now, with game coming up on thursday, not enough time, and with regular season coming up, you cant beat up the players during the season;
You could possibly, if you let players have sunday off, work 2 days in pads,and then one day rest, then walkthrough thursday morning. If players play sloppy again in thursdays game, you had better work them in some fashion and get them ready, because letting them goof off in shorts isnt getting the job done. Wade has got to quit trying to be pappa with these players, himself, and coaches, and come down on them hard. Get their attention!

again my point is this,
1. bryan broaddus said that when cowboys were in pads, they looked good, and practiced good, but when in shorts sloppy

2. Are the refs going to wait and let the cowboys slowly walk up to the line of scrimmage and call plays they need to, NO!

3. You have to do that in training camp, but when your practices are sloppy because you mostly have practiced in shorts, with no timing for plays of being hit or hit back in game type situations, then players arent ready, and you as coaches havent gotten the players ready
A. How many blown assignments did players have, or look confused with play calling by Romo in huddle? Too Many! But thats the result you get when you have players walk through in practice and work out in shorts in comparision to pads, with actual game type situations.
B. Did you hear Romo say that we need some type of signal for these loud crowd noises we will be in opposing stadiums? Why wasnt that done and prepared for in practice?
C. Did you know that the cowboys hardly prepared for crowd noise before they left for houston game?

4. Thats sloppy coaching, and getting the players ready. You cant be buddy buddy with these players. You have to work them some too, but at same time, when you wear them out, like one person posted, you need rest. Wade didnt give the players any day off to rest their legs or brains.

That again to me, is poor coaching.

And again, their is an old saying, the players take on the personality of the head coach, when head coach is laid back, etc.. players will intimate his actions somewhat on the field.

Its like Jimmy Johnson said one time, I hate losing, and so should you players. But some of the players could care less, they just wanted to have a good old time, after the loss to the skins on plane ride back home. That says it all right there.

If coaches arent pushing the players hard, etc, then why should the players put forth the effort or worry. Its all about attitude, desire, intensity, focus and heart!

i wonder if any team practiced for " crowd noise " this preseason ?

or in any preseason ever ?

joe...you better slow down i dont think you will make it thru 16 real games at this pace.

so are you going to remember this if Houston fades down the stretch and Dallas plays well in December?

has there actually been any plays where it was a physical problem that the Cowboys look bad? How is running stairs or practicing in the heat going to make you mentally sharper in a preseason game in a dome?

i can make it buddy, no problem
if we approach a team and play the best we can, but opposing team is better, doesnt bother me if we get beat, but when coaching staff, players are lackluster like this game, then i get upset

again listen to wade press conf, his attitude about the approach to this game, and being aggressive and not, thats what im pointing too, when some games count, wade is laid back and it reflects on the team,

like john madden said once, the team takes on the personality of their head coach to a degree
