I hear lots of whistling past the graveyard stuff here. Its tougher to play center then some here think; you need experience in actual games to do it acceptably.

is Jacox still available, the FA from Miami?

If so, maybe Jerry can throw some money at him....he can play Center and Guard.

No whistling here. I trust the coaching staff and the brain trust. If we go into the season with Berger/Proctor/Free as the back-up center then I'm fine with that.

The fact is you can't have pro-bowlers backing up pro-bowlers at every position-- there will be shortfalls here and there. I doubt you'll see more than 9 o-lineman carried on the active roster...

That's 8 right there... So who you gonna bring in? A guy that is only a center? I don't think so... and that's why either Berger or Proctor will become the 9th man and probably the backup center/guard.

I believe he's still looking for work... and I concur, he'd make a nice short-term fill-in...

I'm with you on the first eight and on the logic employed here. And you're not only the self-styled "master of the obvious," you're one of the many posters on this site whom I hold in high regard. That said, where is Rivera? He's not on your list of the top eight, but despite his most recent surgery, I haven't heard that the Cowboys are trading/cutting him or that he's retiring. Is this something obvious I'm missing? (By the way, I'm not trying to say that his performance thus far as a Cowboy merits him a position without competition this season, just that I haven't heard anything definitive about his future from official sources.)

Do you REALLY think that going into a season with no one that has played a regular season game as a center, and has never played it in college either, is an acceptable backup?

Yes.

I'd rather have a better prospect playing center that may be a converted guard or tackle (or both) than a marginal prospect who was signed just because he has played center "in a game" before.

Would I have liked Dallas to draft someone like Doug Datish? Sure, but it was lower on my list of priorities.

I'm pretty sure this isn't the first guard to center conversion in the history of the NFL.

Give one of those guys reps at center during mini-camp, TC and the preseason games (as well as on the scout team) and I think they'll be OK. I'd imagine they've already been playing it on the scout team.

I've read in several places that it's a foregone conclusion that Rivera won't be back.

He'll either retire or the Cowboys will release him.

And judging by the fact that he hasn't announced his retirement, it looks like he's taking the low road, forcing Dallas to cut him so he still gets paid.

So much for the guy who offered to give his bonus money back.....

If the guy thinks he can still play and it doesnt effect our cap situation one way or another by keeping him then I dont see why keeping him around is sucha bad idea.

Lets see what he can do. If hes bad we can just cut him but if hes good then he has value as a backup.

I would like to see him transition to a coaching role. I think he would have some value in teaching the younger players what he knows.

And how did I ever make your 'Fan Club'?

what about free agent pick up Steve Rissler from Floida?
maybe he m,akes the team as back up center. I think He was a pretty good player in college...

I agree, I think he is a prospect and with a good camp could earn a spot as backup at center and guard.

You make a good point on Rivera... I just sort have him on "hold" at the moment BUT if he does come back (provided he can pass a physical) then that obviously limits our roster options even more.

I don't think Rivera will be back and chances are will be released in June to lessen the cap hit.

Rivera is scheduled to receive a $2 million salary this year and $3 million in 2008 and 2009. He received a signing bonus of $8.125 million ($1.625M prorated per year) so if the Cowboys could take a hit if he is released or retires this season:

Prior to June 1: lose $2.875M in 2007
After June 1: gain $375K in 2007; lose $250K in 2008
It’s obviously less painful to do the transaction after June 1, but other factors will dictate if that is the case.
