Its possible that they were in a cover 2 look. This... Could be the reason that we rarely employ cover 2.

If it were Cover 2, Carr wouldn't have carried Dez that deep. Not sure what the coverage was, because of the camera.

Depends if it was Cover 2 man. Church appeared to be shaded to Dez's side. This may be the result of him favoring a dominant player (Cover 1) or him being lined up due to scheme (Cover 2 man; no way of knowing because of the angle of the camera). I will say this, if it was single high, what was the point of Church being in that position (we should know that he is not that type of player by now). If it is cover 2, Church needs to align wider to not give Dez the easy give me go route (also Carr could have attempted to funnel him more inside).

It's not man coverage, because the linebackers are playing zone.

Or only one back released. We can't tell the formation that was used. Looks like the middle linebacker excepts responsibility for covering the running back. Play was so quick that you can't see if he runs with the running back or not.

If you look at where Church lines up, he is on the far hash, as opposed to the middle of the field. Unusual for cover 1.

Church late getting over to help again......he needs to be replaced, he's horrible...

He isn't horrible but he does need to be replaced. He has no range, he can't cover well and his tackling ability has deteriorated.

I'm hoping Wilcox steps up his game as a box safety and the new kid Frazier plays well enough to make Church expendable.

This is from Broadus

  • David Helman loves when I do this, so this one was for you, T.J. After the scrimmage, I walked over to Dez Bryant as he was playing catch with his son and yelled “Stutter-Go?” He replied with a smile -- “Yes sir.” Going back and taking a look at the play, it was an outstanding job by Bryant of selling the route against Brandon Carr. Bryant lined up on the left side and came off the line with some pace. Carr had to respect that, but it wasn’t until Bryant went for the stutter that Carr sank his hips. Once Bryant had him in that position, he was able to once again burst up the field, leaving Carr in a trailing position. Romo laid the ball in a perfect position out front of Bryant and away from a driving Barry Church, who was late to the scene helping with Cole Beasley. It was a well-executed route with an outstanding throw against a cornerback that had been giving Dez Bryant fits in these practices.
Maybe Church wasn't as much to blame if he was helping out on Cole Beasley.

if that isn't the definition of horrible, than I don't know what is, and Wilcox will be lucky to make the team...

It's the definition of serviceable. Not everyone can be a Pro Bowler.

Wilcox is a safety out of position. Anyway, aren't they all lucky if they make the team?

Church cannot play in space. At this point he should be a specialty SS/LB in short distance or goal line packages.

Six NFL seasons...three (3) career interceptions. None since 2014; zero (0) passes defensed last year.

I said it 4 months ago. They needed to upgrade both safety spots. Jones fills one of those slots but as long as Church is back there, S is a weakness.

Church seems like a heady player and a good leader and doesn't rock the boat which I suspect means he's basically another Nick Hayden............a Marinelli favorite who logs oodles of game time when he clearly shouldn't.

I've always wondered about this in training camp. When we see a play like this do people get excited with the beautiful execution from Romo to Dez or do we get disappointed in Carr for biting on the stutter go and Church for being late? If it was reversed and Carr and Church was all over Dez and the pass was picked off or hit the ground would we be excited with Carr & Church or disappointed that Romo and Dez haven't found their rhythm?

Doesn't really make sense to me that Church would be helping out on Beasley when there was a LB sitting underneath. He reacted to the play as though he never saw Dez running down the sideline.
