Barry Church at FS?

Has there been any talk about how the rook/Heath has looked at safety?

Yikes is right. Church is what he is, a dependable safety with limited range but an above average tackler for the position. (Yes, believe it or not a lot of safeties can't tackle at all).

He also stays healthy which is always a plus. But, the team obviously gave him that contract because they thought his range might increase over the years.

It hasn't, and in a pass happy league you really do need two safeties that can cover.

He should be a backup at this point and I'd have no problem with that. But with a contract over 4 million, he should have been replaced. Nelson is an older guy, but he'd have made a great 1-2 year stop gap here at SS for the same price.

We get a little too sentimental with players sometimes. Church will be a liability in coverage this season. Not good when your pass rush is lacking as well.

He used to be a reliable tackler, but last year, he was horrible. Not sure why his tackling declined so much.

First we need a pass rush, then we can worry about safety :omg:

Church cannot play in space. At this point he should be a specialty SS/LB in short distance or goal line packages.

Six NFL seasons...three (3) career interceptions. None since 2014; zero (0) passes defensed last year.

He came out of Toledo running a 4.7 -- which is the reason why he went undrafted.

Fast forward 6 years later and you have to wonder if he is in the 4.8 range.

With a torn achilles as part of his injury history, I don't doubt it.

Too slow. In fact I hope he gets replaced by better and esp faster.

I think Church needs to make the Thomas David move to LB. He's not a starting safety on a good defense.

It's the definition of serviceable. Not everyone can be a Pro Bowler.

Wilcox is a safety out of position. Anyway, aren't they all lucky if they make the team?
You have low expectations for serviceable. Anybody that can line up in the correct position would be serviceable by that definition.

His tackling has declined a lot over the last couple of seasons. He was a borderline starting talent to begin with and age has not been good to him.

Wow, seeing how Church is basically the second best tackler on the team, I hope you all can find a real effective tackler to replace him. Lee is the only one better on the team.
Yes, Church is not a great cover guy and does get lost at times but you can easily make a case for that with Wilcox, Heath, Claiborne and Carr. Jones has potential and hope to see him find his spot this year. Scandrick is the only DB at this point that can cover on this team and not afraid to put his head down and wrap the legs. Wilcox takes terrible angles and our corners are flat out wiffs. I would give some grace to Wilcox, Claiborne Carr if they could cover but they can't cover or tackle. If we're going to find a solution to our DB's might look at the problem holistically.

FYI, my expectations: Leadership, coachable, tackling ability, dependable -- knows his position, range, speed. Church meets three out of the six; he is neither great nor is he horrible. He is serviceable.

Again, Church wasn't a very good tackler last year. Let's stop acting like he's some text book tackling safety out there.

And again, in this current pass happy league, having your safety just be a good tackler makes him a liability.

Church has been a liability in coverage from day one. Some have chosen to overlook because the team loves him and he's a great locker room guy.

His replacement is a year away....

Church is barely a SS, more like a hybrid LB in a Dime lol
