Chicago Bears bench Jay Cutler for Jimmy Clausen

The Chicago Bears made a heck of a statement this offseason. They gave quarterbackJay Cutler a $126 million contract.

The team was telling everyone that even though Cutler was a mediocre quarterback for eight years, the ninth would be different. He would be paid like he was on the same level as the game's best quarterbacks. And now, 14 games later, they’re benching Cutler forJimmy Clausen.

ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter reported the news. It’s a stunning move by a team that is falling apart at the seams through constant backbiting, both public and private. The Bears have lost three in a row, there are reports that coach Marc Trestman will be fired, and now the team is starting Clausen (three touchdowns, nine interceptions in his NFL career) over the man they paid like one of the best quarterbacks in football less than a year ago.

Just looked up Cutler's contract......................He has $15.5 million guaranteed next year:laugh:

And people criticize the contract Jerry gave Romo.

I think Jay just really doesn't care about football. He clearly has talent but football just isn't important to him. He has made millions of dollars playing the game and it got him a beautiful wife. For Jay, football is "a means to an end".

Just reported on nfl network. Jimmy clauson in.

I love it. The powers that be and all the football-ologist try to put all these QB's above Tony ... the Cutler's, the Ryan's, the Flacco's (I know he has a SB ... I'm talking about pure skill), the RG III, etc. etc.) Tony has neeever had a season like any of these busters and never will. I just hate that Jerry wasted the best years of Tony's career.

I don't understand it.
I read on this forum that Cutler was potentially better than Romo. How could he get benched?

I get what they're trying to do to save their own jobs but really come on?

Does anyone believe this means anything?

Everyone in the world knows Jay Cutler is going to be their starter next year. It's not even in question. The deal they signed him to makes it impossible to do anything but start him.

So basically they're not risking their franchise QB in the final two games that don't mean anything to them. This looks like a strong move by a coach trying to save his job but in reality it simply rings very hallow.

How are they going to cut Cutler? They're going to screw their cap up if they do.

I guess if they're willing to have huge cap hits then I guess they could be doing that.

I doubt very seriously they're getting rid of Cutler.

you don't get it. They CAN'T keep him now that they have benched him. By doing that they have made the decision he is gone after this season. There is no way they cannot do otherwise. They have decided to eat the cap hit.

only way cutler survives is if they hire Mike Shanahan

Why? Washington did it last year with Griffin. Again this year.

I guess we will see.

That seems insane to me.

But stranger things have happened.
