From their latest podcast. Neither guy seems confident in Ferguson as the starter or even the best player at the position.

Belt even went as far as to say that the Cowboys drafted Ferguson not because they were in love with the prospect but because they felt they had to get a TE with that pick because of the TE run that was taking place and that Ferguson lacks the upside of Schoonmaker and Hendershot.

I like Ferguson. I think he's got moxie. The kind of guy who can make a play at a critical point in the game. I want him on my team but as the backup. So I tend to agree with this take. I'm just not sure the others are any better as these guys seem to think.

I personally like Fergenson from what I saw last year.

I think he surprises this year, I actually like the TE room as a whole.

You kinda have to like the TE room because they're all looking similar at this point. But maybe that's a good thing and they'll all fight like hell to separate themselves from the rest and get that Schultz-type money, lol.

Line Ferguson up in the slot or even out wide and have Schoonie at the TE spot.

They're all about the same to me so I guess you could say that performance level won't experience a drastic drop off regardless of who starts.

I question their reasoning on Ferguson. I don’t care how he got here, only what he did once he was here. And that was to exceed all expectations.

Ferguson is kind of a Cameron Brate type for me. If he is your starter, at least you arent completely bare at the position, but ideally you want him as a high usuage #2

Ferguson looked good his rookie year…..not sure why they feel that way.

He did look good, but is he really starter material. That is something we still have to find out. I do think he is better than Schoonmaker, and will most likely get the lions share of passing game opportunities this year

What’s “starting material”? What hasn’t he shown he can do?

I think that depends on how quickly the rookie can pick up the pro game.

It came from Broaddus, so I discount his evaluation.

He looked good when he played, and that was from catching passes from a QB many do not like on here. He had some very good YAC yards. Something this team desperately has been lacking for years.
Hopefully MM changes that.

I don't know if this answers your question but MM and McClay talked about Schoonmaker being a little ahead of the curve as a blocker and /or pass protector coz he played at Michigan. MM also mentioned he thinks he can line him up at all 3 TE positions. Just me, but I wonder if they don't see Ferg as a complete TE.

So Ferguson was drafted in the 4th round of the 2022 draft and Hendershot went undrafted in that same draft class but Hendershot has more upside? That article just lost all creditilty to me.

Btw, Schoonmaker should have more upside because he is a 2nd round pick.

He isn't as good as Schoon. Schoon is a way better blocker for one thing. Schoon is far enough down the ladder he won't get the targets Ferg will be he is his equal in receiving.

Broaddus also said that Ferguson has leaned up and looks more fluid this year so there is an out.

I think Ferguson talent wise is in the Schultz category (he looks like he could be a little better to me) and Hendershot is in the Blake Jarwin category, which is a receiving h-back type. Schoonmaker actually has a chance to be a top TE in both blocking and receiving.

I didn’t see Ferguson being deficient in that area, certainly not compared to our ‘franchise TE’ Schultz.
