That's why he'll be playing DT.
He's a strong side DE, not a DT. Putting a guy who is 265-270 at DT sure isn't going to help his chances of being an NFL player

maybe they'll fertilize him and move him to DT
They can bulk guys up you know. Melton was bulked up with Chicago. Gardner has played up and down the line.

Gardner was one of five seventh-rounders the Cowboys drafted on Saturday in a defensive heavy draft.
Gardner, 6-foot-3, 276 pounds, will play defensive tackle and is expected to back up Henry Melton along the line.
1st, you have no clue whether Gardner is capable of adding another 15-20 pounds of good weight. 2nd, why move him? He has plenty of athleticism to be a SDE and DE is more of a need than just another body at DT who really doesn't belong there
Aaron Donald, a person almost everyone seemed to want us to pick, 6-1, 285. Garder is what 6-3, so I think he can add 10 to 15 pounds pretty easily. 20 is not out of the question either.
I just added Ben Gardner to my favorite 7 round and UDFA defensive players after watching his highlight for the draft. First I will tell you my others favorite players; Ken Bishop, Adman Dixon, Davon Coleman and now I'm ]adding Ben Gardner. Ben Gardner didn't have a fast 40, but he don't need to run 40 yards to tackle a QB or RB, just 10 yards or less. He is right when he said that he will bring a physical presence to the DLine. When he hit QB's they know they've been hit. Search his name for videos and look for his video listed as "2014 DRAFT PROSPECT-BEN GARDNER and you will see a lot of hard hits, especially at the 1:30 and the 3:32 mark. The one thing I didn't like about D. Lawrence highlights, he didn't get many hard or bone crushing hits like Ben Gardner. D. Lawrence tackle form was a throw down form, don't know if that's a form, but I saw too many tackles of this nature. I would like to have seen more head popping back hits from D. Lawrence. Now, back to Ben Gardner. He will be a beast and other teams OLine will hate to face him, because he will keep coming non stop. I have nickname him, "THE GARDNER" because he likes to plant QB's. Tell me your nicknames for Ben Gardner?
I'm guessing the veteran players might just call him "hey, rook . . ."
How long you Ben "The" Gardner...aww bout' 22 years..
Ben "The Rake" Gardner....okay maybe not.
Just going by what I read here:

"Head coach Jason Garrett said that Gardner will work at left defensive end to begin his career with the club but has the flexibility to move inside and play the 3-technique at defensive tackle at some point."
So he's a DE who MIGHT play some 3 tech if need be....in the future. I just don't see a scenario where he is our best option at DT on any given play. Unless a bunch of injuries occur, or it becomes apparent that he can't play DE in the nfl and they want to give him a shot to stick on the team at a different position. Look at his measurables and pro day workout #'s, short arms are the only thing I see that should keep him from being a good SDE on 1st and 2nd down.
With that info. Everything seems to lean that Crawford will be used at DT instead of DE then. As Crawford, according to JG can play anywhere on the line, and they wanted to see where he feels best at.
Benihana?I will just continue to call him by the name his parents gave him.
