Bengals Cut Levi Jones

Bengals Cut Levi Jones

The Cincinnati Bengals have released veteran left tackle Levi Jones. The team announced the move earlier today.

Jones was a first-round pick in 2002, and he quickly became a fixture on the left side of the line.

Signed through 2012, Jones was due to earn a base salary of $3 million this year. (Frankly, it’s a reasonable amount for a guy who by all appearances can still play.)

The Bengals held onto Jones until they could obtain his replacement, Alabama’s Andre Smith, with the sixth overall pick in the 2009 draft.

The departure of Jones means that both starting tackles from 2008 are now gone. Right tackle Stacy Andrews signed with the Eagles early in free agency.

The Bengals reportedly informed Jones after picking Smith that the team would try to trade Jones before cutting him. They found no suitors.

Now that Jones is on the market, look for the Bills to make a run at him, given that Buffalo traded left tackle Jason Peters and didn’t replace him with either of their first-round draft picks.

Cowboys have no money for him, so don't even suggest it! :laugh2:

He'll want to go somewhere and start. I doubt he'd sign here unless he can play G and C as well as T.

I'd rather see him go to the Bills than the Commanders.

Some suggestion that there are issues with a bad back. A bad sign, usually.

cut flo sign jones! yeah yeah i know the cap hit with accelerated bonus blah blah blah. :(

Too many injuries.

There's usually a very good reason when a team cuts a starting LT who's under 30.

If we get rid of Ellis we are going to get $4.5 mil open on the cap.

And Flo is the #1 LT. I would not mind bringing in Jones to compete with Flo for the job in training camp.

(Jones may not go for this, but you should send out word anyway).

As for the loss of Ellis. Spencer is the #1 now. And we just drafted two rookies to push him out anyway.

Enough with the idea that what we had last year was so great that you can't change it because the last time I checked this team hasn't won a playoff game since 1996.

Never heard about a bad back. I think he had some knee swelling, but no major surgeries.

This sounds good.

I say we draft a LT and not buy any more OL than we have to. Let's try some home grown rather than buying at the market.

normally i avoid the "name candy" players cause if anyone has a name someone recognizes, they're usually better than what we have here and we must trade someone for him.

even if the player in question was released. strange phenomonon. : )

levi is a solid player. we need a solid OL. i'm not as worried about it w/romo than i was w/bledsoe, but an upgrade to the OL should be considered. i'd rather have a rookie at LB, lose ellis, gain a solid OL and be a better overall team.

not a bad idea, dc.

I would rather have Jones (if healthy) than Flo, who is in full blown regression as a player...however it ain't gonna happen so we should probably chalk this up as a pipe dream and move on.

the way dc puts it, would you rather have jones, or ellis?

at this point, jones.
