It almost needs to be broken down as:

'55 to '63

'64 to '69

'70 to '79

Their is such a powerful shift in music when the Beatles "arrived" in the beginning of '64 that I think you have to make a split there.

I agree with that. Maybe I'll start a thread later....just to see if we have any other old-timers like me here!

Yeah, both the '55 to '63 and the '64 to '69 were such powerful periods... And for different reasons.

I grew up in the 70's but I'm far more partial to the 80's when it comes to music. I'm sure MTV had something to do with that. But there was such an influx of good music from outside the U.S. (due to groups based in Europe being ahead of the curve when it came to making music videos) that I simply got more out of the music in the first half of the 80's than I did the entire 70's.

That being said I'm been listening much more to "70's on 7" on satellite radio and my appreciation for 70's music is definitely on the increase.

I am a big fan of the 70's too. I always said I wouldn't be like this but I just don't care much for a lot of today's music. I usually listen to talk radio, gospel, country, or classic stations now. Somewhere along the way I have become my Dad.

I can't stand most if today's music, but I think that's a sign I'm getting old.

I think todays radio is a bigger problem than the music. In my opinion, there is plenty of good music from any decade.
