Not a chance. Williams was an elite talent, but only lived up to it for a few years. Martin was one of the best passrushers of his era. He should be in the HOF.

Tony Hill is one of the most underappreciated players in Cowboy history, IMO. The guy was our best WR for several years. He was better than Alvin Harper by miles.

I think you'd also have to give consideration to John Dutton at 78. He was never as good in Dallas as he was with the Colts, but then Lett - as good as he was - never reached his potential either.

Good call... Dutton was a heck of a player. He kind of got forgotten because Randy, Harvey, and Too Tall were so good around him, but he was an excellent DT. I'd put him over Lett.

Depends on your criteria. Alworth is clearly the best player to ever wear that # for the Cowboys, he just wasn't that player anymore when he was a Cowboy.

If it has to be how good the guy was as a Cowboy, it probably should be Rentzel.

no Miles Austin is #19

Alworth is one of the greatest players in NFL history. It depends in what context he meant greatest.

Miles had one good year. As usual, you go way overboard on the present.

My criteria would be what he did as a Cowboy, but again that is my criteria.

But yes, for the time being I would have to agree with Rentzel statistically, but I think it is just a formality as Miles will blow his numbers out the door.

Also Eddie George wore #27. Clearly Eddie George had a better career than Thomas Everett. Without doing a lot of research there are probably more players who made a guest appearance in a Cowboys uniform that would have to be considered.

#18 Glenn Carano

I'd put David Buehler above Carano (already), but Bernie Kosar beats them both for now. Kosar was an important part of that XXVII team. He did a fine job of finishing an NFC Championship game for an injured Aikman.

Hey Hos, are you sure Thomas Everett was better than Ron Fellows for the #27?

Matt McBriar ahead of Rafael Septien for the #1

I do agree that Jay Novacek is just slightly better than Doug Cosbie for #84.

Was Hawthorne #39? I thought he was 38...

But speaking of 38, I've never heard of Sam Baker before. How about Ron Francis instead. :)

You're right, Hawthorne did wear #38.

Sam Baker was a kicker and punter for the Cowboys for only 2 seasons in 62'-63', but he did make the Pro Bowl in 63'. I'm assuming he made it as a punter, since he averaged 42.6 yards a punt in his career.

I guess I'm down to 2 jerseys now.

Don't forget that Dutton spent most of his time in Dallas playing out of position.

He was an All Pro DE with the Colts, held out, and was traded to the Cowboys in the mid-season of 1979. The Cowboys gave up a 1st and 2nd round draft choice for him because they needed a high quality replacement for Ed Jones, who had retired (temporarily) to give boxing a try.

Ed Jones returned the next season, started again at DE, and Dutton moved to tackle.

Dutton was the best DE ever to play DT for the Cowboys.

Then give Austin another few years to prove himself and I'll buy your argument but over the course of his career he has not be the most influential to put on the #19 but the bottom line is your basing your argument on one productive year.

If we when by your simple thinking Austin would not even be ranked ahead of Key. All he did as a Cowboys was 141 receptions for 1820 yds and 12 TD's.

Dont you dare say that was over 2 seasons because the numbers are what they are AS COWBOYS if you use your logic

If Newman is on the 70s Cowboys, they win one of those Steelers Super Bowls for suire, imo.

They had Mel Blount, and Dallas had no one to match him.

Newman on Lynn Swann, very interesting.

Not really. Waters was the better player.

Waters couldn't cover guys like Lynn Swann or Stallworth. He played in a run era and was a safety and a great one.

Newman lives on the edge and draws WRs of all size/speed ratios.

They played in two different eras and played two different positions.

I don't think some people get how great a player/cover CB Newman was from 2003-2007. He had a real good year this year and was very good when healthy in 2008. Some expect perfection out of him, and they fail to recognize that the Woodsons, Samuels, Asomughas, ect... of the world get beat, too.
