This guy right here!! Legendary.

A far as female, that one is a tough one. Hold please.

Ok, after some further consideration I think Whitney Houston was pretty damn legendary.

It's too bad both of these amazing artists had to have an untimely and sad ending to their stories.

I'll have to think about a female voice...

But for a male?

Easy.

Roy Orbison.

Quotes:

"Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel both commented on the otherworldly quality of Orbison's voice. Dwight Yoakam stated that Orbison's voice sounded like "the cry of an angel falling backward through an open window". Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees went further to say that when he heard "Crying" for the first time, "That was it. To me that was the voice of God." Elvis Presley stated Orbison's voice was the greatest and most distinctive he had ever heard."

Best? That would be a tough one. Favorites, much easier.

Frank Sinatra, the greatest song stylist ever.

Roy Orbison, the very best voice in R&R history.

Karen Carpenter, the crystal clear voice of an angel.

Patsy Cline is a close second with a soulful voice that made me feel her songs.

Oh, and don't forget Linda Ronstadt. I didn't care much at all for her early stuff, but if you get past not liking the song, she has one of the most amazing voices in the industry.

Really hard to argue with so many of the singers listed so far but, for pure singing talent, it is hard for me to get past Sarah Brightman. I first saw her in "The Phantom of the Oprea"and was completely spellbound by the power, range and crystal clarity of her voice.

Her duet with Andrea Bocelli, "Time to Say Goodbye" has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever.

That's a good list.

I've been thinking about female vocalists.

Boy I love Patsy Cline and she's right up there.

Karen Carpenter is great too.

Linda Ronstadt is another solid choice.

I'll throw in a couple that are not as well known but boy can they sing!

Judith Durham of the 60's group "The Seekers"...

Yvonne Elliman

I think Lynn Anderson's voice is one best ever in country music

And even though she's kind of an odd-ball, Sinead O'Connor has a magnificent voice...

So many it is really unfair to narrow it down to one. I will throw another name out for the male category that I haven’t seen…Lionel Ritchie. For female I will add in
Indina Menzel.

i agree with those that say it's difficult to determine pure vocal singers vs live performers
Especially when considering some of these performers are mega icons. (ala Jackson, Elvis, Prince)

I don't know of I could pick a best of either. For women, Aretha, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and more recent singers, Adele and Joss Stone
Any list would not be complete without Etta James......
