Yet another reason why I think Aikman's QB rating is superior to the one used.

What's his formula?
After looking into this (and yes, I'm answering my own question), Aikman does not have a revised QB rating.

Aikman has offensive and defensive efficiency ratings, but no ratings just for QBs that I can tell.

you should look up td ratio for quarterbacks in the redzone last year. tony romo had INSANE redzone stats. far better than anyone else.

touchdowns overall are a little overrated. some teams run more in the redzone. some teams like the saints still pass at the 1 yard line. ypa is the most telling stat in my opinion. mediocre quarterbacks are in the 6 to lower 7's, good qb's in the high 7's, and great qb play is 8+.

Has Troy ever released the actual formula for the AER?

As far as I know, he hasn't released the formula but somehow people know what facets he is looking at and their weights in the overall rating.

  • Percentage of possible points scored (offense)/allowed (defense) in the Red-Zone - 20%
  • Adjusted points (Only points scored by the offense are included) - 20%
  • Adjusted turnovers (Only turnovers committed by the offense or forced by he defense are included) - 20%
  • Yards per rush - 10%
  • Yards per pass - 10%
  • Total first downs - 10%
  • Third down conversion percentage - 10%

I pulled this from a 2 year old and the article or post I got it from has a quote where Aikman says it isn't rocket science. It wouldn't shock me if someone had figured it out by now. I mean, just looking at it I would guess it is all based on where you rank in those categories.

Really, there isn't much he can do with it.

He probably just bases the amount of points for each team on the leader in each category. So for % of possible points it might look like this.

League Leader has a rating of 80%.

League leader gets all (20) possible points in that category and every other teams points is determined by their performance relative to the leader. Team X has a redzone score of 60%, their points will equal [(60%/80%)X20] = 15 points.

Just a guess because I don't really see how or why he would get incredibly complicated.

Exactly. Big Ben sucked in Steelers first Superbowl and was OK in their second.

Brees played out of this world.

Well honestly he played against the Lions for crying out loud... Any upper echelon QB would have torn up their secondary.
