He is about the only one who has made the claim others are saying the rookie made a mistake it was his mistake to lay it on anyone but the driver is a cop out. He had 1 car in full view it was his own mistake after running 499 miles he should have been able to get by one car without putting it in the wall.

Here's the interview, the 3:19 mark is about where he starts his answer:

There's no cop out. No one said he didn't make a mistake. We've said that the bigger mistake was made by the spotter. You say the opposite. I'll side with Mario.

Yep and if his name wasn't Earnhardt he'd be just another driver.

No doubt name recognition helps as him as it has many drivers who have come from racing families. Dale Sr was one of the most popular when he was racing does not come as a shock that his Sr fans would be pulling for Jr.

The guy is a rookie and all he was doing was trying to win the Indy 500. He was so hyped I doubt anyone could have calmed him down.

No doubt....too bad his talent doesn't live up to the name

Not many do. Jr had enormous pressure from the day he started racing. He's great for the sport and he's very talented. I'm not a big fan, and I wasn't a fan of his Dad either, but I can respect both of their abilities.

Mario did not blame the spotter he said "maybe he could have said something, I don't know"

Driver is the one responsible he had passed many cars all day long and yet screw up in the end. Driver error plain and simple

That's not all he said. His answer is 30 seconds long. Notice the guy sitting next to Mario nodding his head in agreement? Mario had a choice when answering the question and he chose the spotter, not the driver. But as Mario says...."But what do I know?"

He may never be as good as his dad few ever will be.

Jr has had some rough season no doubt he also had 18 wins 155 top 10's and won the Daytona 500 with a lot of racing ahead of him.

I listened to the tape he said I don't know maybe the spotter could have said something that is different than claiming it was the spotters fault. The driver is the man behind the wheel it is his job no one else. Heck why not blame the crew chief who has constant communications with the driver to tell him to ease up

I did earlier in this thread. When you have a rookie qb in the Super Bowl and you're up by 6 with 2 minutes left, and you have the ball, you tell him to not make the big mistake. You tell him to not throw the pick 6. You call plays that keep that from happening. If you don't, then you should take the responsibility for it. It's on the coach.
Same thing here. It's on the spotter and crew chief primarily. By the way, his crew chief said he was very proud of Hildebrand and that he put them in position to win that race, even with an impossible fuel strategy. The kid did a great job.

Sorry you don't tell a QB not to make a mistake Jimmy Johnson said you don't put negatives in the players head. He said he never told a back don't fumble instead he would say hang on to ball. It is reinforcing the positive not instilling a negative.

I agree the kid did a great job but he screw up in the end sorry you can lay it at the feet of anyone you like but it is the drivers job no one else it is his.

And it is a cop out to lay blame at other peoples feet to say he crashed so lets blame it on someone else Please it starts and ends with the driver and if the crew cheif felt the need to say something about taking it easy then he should have but it still comes down to the driver

Ok, don't put negatives in his head...say what Mario said to say, "Relax, you got this, don't make that pass". Nice and positive.

You think Chad Knaus would've stayed quiet on that last lap? How about Chip Gnassi?

It would have been crazy if he had enough of a lead to still win. The winners circle pictures would be priceless. :laugh2:

That would've been a true Stroker Ace moment. :)

I love how he stayed on it as he rode the wall.

I guess the protest got turned down? I thought that, by the letter of the rule, Wheldon should not have won that race because he gained the lead by passing when the caution was out. You cannot pass under a caution. Or so I thought.

Absolutely. I love NASCAR and go to a lot of the races. I was at Charlotte in the Diamond Tower for the All Star race. One thing that no one can deny is that while Jr. may be the fan's favorite driver, he is also NASCAR's. The things they do to make sure he has EVERY benefit to win a race is something to see.

As you said, if his name wasn't Earnhardt that flag would have been flying.
