BIGG Davis, there are concerns.

First time checking in since the game.

Leonard Davis looked really good run blocking, even dominant at times. I really like that, and knew we would get that from him.

But folks, I have read all the excitment about him, and I understand that, and he should be an upgrade over Rivera,

BUT

Bigg still concerns me in the passing game. I have posted more than once that I went back and looked at games he played Guard in Arizona. One thing was very obvious. If he gets his hands on you and is in front of you, you are not getting close to the QB, but if a quick move is made on him there are times his feet are just stuck in the ground and the DT is quickly inside to the QB. It seemed to happen about 3 or 4 times a game.

Twice this showed up in the Pre-Season game against the Colts. I have really been hoping this is an improved area for BIGG, after last night it does not seem to be.

So what I am really saying here is I expect at times for BIGG to just look dominant, but the history shows about 3 or 4 times a game he is going to get beat with a quick move in Pass Protection and Romo is going to go down quickly with a hit or sack.

I love watching the big man knock people silly in the run game, but his pass protection still concerns me. He has to improve in this area. I am wondering if he can.

So who do you think we should have gotten then?

What should we do about it

protest

demand he give back money?

throw him to wolves

Eat him alive?

hire him save the horses in mud?

I like the last one

Shouldnt we sometimes give the pass rusher some credit being successful in the one on one batte? Not being sarcastic.... its a serious question

I think you have to make a tradeoff with 90% of offensive linemen in today's NFL. Most guys are going to be dominant in one phase, and weak in one, or average in both. We're going to have a better run game no doubt with Davis in there, but yes, there will be times when his size works against him in pass protection.

I would take this tradeoff over having say, two average guys who are just decent in run and pass blocking. I think with Romo's ability to move, the times Davis does miss in pass blocking won't hurt us too badly.

Everyone gets beaten to the punch sometimes. If Bigg gets beaten 3-4 times a game, he still is a vast improvement on what we had previously.

This is a very good point too. I mean, how many times do you think opposing teams are going to be calling for the heads of their Tackles and Guards when D-Ware makes them look foolish. Sometimes the defender just wins the battle.

Damn it!! You mean he's not perfect? Another bad decision by Jerra...

I wonder if we could trade him? You know, get something for him while we can before he hurts someone...

You have to remember the guys playing across the line from Davis are collecting a check too. And if you think just because we paid BIGG $49 Mil just mean guys on the other team will just wave a white flag and say, "Well Dallas paid millions for this guy-- I'm not even going to try to compete-- He's obviously the greatest offensive lineman to ever play the game."

Bigg is the least of our problems, have you looked at who is backing up MOXIE?

By many accounts Davis has been one of our most impressive players in camp.

He is going to have trouble in pass-pro with the quick athletic DTs, and the Colts have that. Get used to it, because it's going to plague us against Philly and the Giants - our team isn't built for pass protection against those teams. The hope is that the run blocking and ability to dominate more physical DTs will be an adequate trade-off.

He's not going to be perfect. We just have to hope he wins more than he loses.

Of course, but the amount of credit a pass rusher deserves should be based on the level of pass blocking lineman he faces. Davis has a serious issue in pass blocking. To me, the man just refuses to play technique. His entire game has to do with contact. If the first move doesn't involve contact, then you can beat him. (Speed on the outside, or switching directions before contact is made)

I saw both plays during the Colts game the poster is talking about. He wasn't just beaten, he was completely whipped as if he was nothing more than a high school player.

Hmmmm that sounds like Larry Allen to me

I think he'll provide solid protection

Even in his prime, Larry Allen sometimes got beat. Of course, Davis is not Allen, but I'm just saying...

Those two plays were on 3rd down too. What bothers me is how quickly they beat him to the QB. Let’s see, two times in 1 quarter would be 8 times per game. He has to improve that.
