Bigger gap: Romo -> Orton or Orton -> Weeden

I think the Cowboys might otherwise be likely to consider cutting Orton if they weren't so strapped for $$ under the cap. BUT with that situation being what it is, they evidently don't want to forfeit their investment in him. Yet another angle they have to consider is how it might affect Weeden to be placed in the same (being thrown to the wolves) situation he faced in Cleveland. Tough call.

The gap from Romo to like 22 other starters in the league is huge...of course its bigger from him to Orton than Orton to Weeden.

Lets talk about the drop off between Andrew Luck and all three of them.

Seriously folks, Orton showed a ton in the last game, he's holding out, and you will see Jerry offer him something like incentives for his number of starts.

Wasn't much of a drop off from Romo to Orton in week 17. Same case from Romo to Kitna as well.

A lot of fans like to think it's doomsday without Romo, despite all the available evidence pointing to the contrary.

Don't throw actual examples in their face. that's unfair.

Weeden is already 30 though so he needs to show something soon. Third year or not. Cleveland was the worst place for him.

That said, I believe the gap between romo and Orton is bigger. Weeden has just as good an arm as Orton. In a backup capacity, I think he can be just as good as Orton.

I agree.
And really, Weeden's arm is stronger than Orton's. Well see if they angering him along some.

Disagree. I think Weeden can be a good backup in the NFL and being thrown into the fire right away is what killed him.

That isn't true anymore. You either have it or you don't.

After about a few games, when the typical DC game-planned for him as they do all starters, that gap would have grown significantly.

But I agree, they were very good backups.

This is how I feel too. I actually thought Orton gave us a better chance of winning that last game. He did a lot of things right and played really well. Even got the defense to jump offside 3 times.Throwing for 350 yards when you haven't started a game since 2011, is impressive. Ultimately, he choked though. Same as we would have gotten out of Romo IMO.. In 2010 with Romo as QB our team started 1-6, when Kitna took over the team went 5-4 and we averaged more points per game. I don't think Kitna or Orton is better than Romo but I don't think there is a huge fall off either.

Don't let the fact that the defense played their best game of the year impact the eye test of a mediocre 22 point effort by Orton in a home game. There was a tremendous drop between Romo and Orton in Week 17 as evidenced by Orton's 1:1 TD to INT ratio and Romo's over 3:1 in the 2013 season, which is pretty damn significant. 28 quarterbacks last season attempted at least 300 passes last season. The group with over a 3:1 TD:INT ratio were Romo, Alex Smith, Nick Foles, Peyton Manning, and Drew Brees. That's four passers who made the playoffs, and a fifth who had his team a game out with a broken back going into Week 17 with the worst defense in the NFL. The 5 starters with a 1:1 or below ratio were Flacco, Henne, Schaub, Eli, and Geno Smith, and we know how those offenses performed.

As for the drop-off to Kitna I think you need to go apples-to-apples on that one and compare the time where Wade as the head coach. That was the team Romo QB'd under before that team was reborn with some discipline, and they went 0-2 with the Wade and Kitna starting combo with 2 TDs to 6 INTs and getting outscored 24 to 80.

LOL td to int is your evidence.
When you dink and dunk like romo and your OC refuses to run the ball inside the opponents five, even the great Quincy Carter could have put up those #s.

Orton had 2 practices to prepare for that game so he was totally rusted, yet he still made the offense run better than Romo.

LOL. Yet another fake fan who doesn't watch the games. 22 points and 2 interceptions against the worst pass defense in the league. Yeah, the offense ran better... in the fantasy world between your ears.

Wow. Now Romo is a dink and dunker? I always thought he was in the top three in the league in yards per pass attempt. I'll take facts over an internet poster any day.

And this is where I have problems with our fans ... Some fans purposely go out of their way just to knock their own darn player (team they root for), and it gets really old. Like really? Who here has even mentioned Andrew Luck? This thread is about Romo, Orton, and Weeden, ya know ... the Cowboys? The team you're supposedly a fan of.

Yes, the fan who believes the drop off from Luck to our famous three may be a bit much to overcome. Some fans want better, no expect better, of this franchise. The drop off between the three is irrelevant.

Check on passes through the air, not what the RAC adds up to and you'll be amazed, or you can listen to the new OC who says "we have to get the ball down the field more".

A topical aside: listening to Weeden's press stuff up on dc.com the last few days, it's pretty clear that he knew when he signed here that Orton was unlikely to play--at least early--and he was going to get some significant snaps in camp. And just reading between the lines, it doesn't sound like he's thinking just OTAs. We'll see what happens ultimately here when the fines kick in, but my guess is that--one way or another--we're looking at Bradon Weeden as QB2 this season.

I also kind of like the guy. Seems like he's got the right temperament, anyway. He's got the tools. It'll be good to see him run the offense in some preseason games.

I like him as a better option than Orton if Romo is out (biting my tongue) for an extended period. He does have the tools and I think this is a good offensive scheme for him.

His YPA was drastically last year. So was his accuracy on the long balls.

I'm also fine with Weeden as our backup. I think he will do a lot better behind our line and with the offensive weapons we have here. He was a sitting duck in Cleveland.
