Bill Parcells on Mike & Mike... Cancelled

Does anyone give Parcells credit for actually developing Romo, when other coaches have destroyed young QBs because they were unwilling to wait? (Think David Carr).

I do, certainly.

As far as Carr is concerned, he could have held the clipboard on the sideline and "developed" for 3 seasons and still would have sucked. But yeah, these high drafted QBs are pushed into action way too soon ($$$$$) and it ruins a lot of them.
So we should just take all credit for his discovery away from Sean Payton and while we are at it, take away all credit from Payton and David Lee? It was 100% Bill Parcells?

I do give him credit, but also think it is shared, and Bill stuck with one of his FOBs way too long.

I give Parcells 100% credit for Vinny Testaverde. Because there is no way that guy sniffs a Dallas Cowboys uniform otherwise. I'll throw Drew Bledsoe in that mix too.

I thank the Man Upstairs that he came, and that he is gone.

Indeed, he came at the right time and then he proceeded to outlive his welcome.

His free agents were spectacular.

Seriously, give me a list of those, or a couple. I'm drawing a blank here. I have a whole slew of them I wish I could forget though.

And while Payton may have been as high or higher on Romo initially, does anyone think Romo would have been around if Parcells was down on him? Does anyone give Parcells credit for actually developing Romo, when other coaches have destroyed young QBs because they were unwilling to wait? (Think David Carr)

I really get tired of hearing that excuse. Plenty of QBs get thrown to the wolves their first year and have great careers - namely Troy Aikman and Peyton Manning. Romo could have had success sooner than he did, and that will always remain an unanswered question. I'll tell you what though, he couldn't have been any worse than Drew Bledsoe or Vinny Testaverde.

His interactions with Owens were not unsuccessful.

We'll just have to agree to disagree there. Not only was there no line of communication between Owens and Parcells, he wouldn't even acknowledge the man by his name. He also refused to integrate him into the gameplan the way Garrett has. Lining Owens up on the outside every down and sending him on a go route is about as pisspoor coaching as I've ever seen. And if he couldn't handle the job, he should've got us an offensive coordinator.

Listen, I don't hate Bill Parcells. I'm glad he's not our coach anymore, but I do realize he made some contributions here. I just don't view him as some football god like a lot of people around here. I see him as a good GM type and a below average coach.

what a short memory you have. Look back to 2003. He immediately changed the team. He signed coach sean payton, dan campbell, richie anderson, toby gowin, Al singleton and two players who ended up injured in donald mitchell and ryan young. Think they didnt have a big effect on turning it around? Oh and he traded a 6 for Terry Glenn. Think glenn, anderson or young come here without Parcells? Maybe one of the most important things he did in 04 was not sign anyone. That allowed us to build this current team. Alot of cash could have been spent but he was smart enough to realize that team had issues, deep issues.

some of you guys are ridiculous with your hatred.

and another myth. Drew bledsoe was very good in most of 05. The line play was so poor in the second half of the season he didnt have much of a chance, yet we still beat kc and should have beat denver. Bledsoe looked out of it in 06, but in 05 the guy was very good. Not his fault petitti and tucker were his tackles.

I don't think you even read the comment I was responding to, or if you did maybe try reading it again. And here's a clue, just because I don't grovel at Parcells feet every chance I get doesn't make me or anyone else a 'hater'.

Terry Glenn wasn't a free agent. Sean Payton wasn't a free agent.

Dan Campbell? Color me unimpressed. Al Singleton... uh.. where is he now? Al Singleton was a smaller Akin Ayodele. Toby Gowin? I don't even need to comment there. Richie Anderson was serviceable, but not what I'd call 'spectacular'. Donald Mitchell and Ryan Young?? Are you high or something? Your whole list is pretty laughable, and I'm not just trying to be argumentative, I'm completely serious. None of those guys were really impact players.

And I'm sorry but Drew Bledsoe was never 'very good'. That was the story of Drew Bledsoe's career with every team, he was a statue that held the ball way too long, and made every OL that ever protected him look like a bunch of stiffs.

he just cancelled the interview and they are trying to reschedule with him

Try reading dude. I said we sent a 6th for Glenn. Clearly that means he wasnt a free agent. And I said we signed payton, payton came here to coach under parcells. Smart strategy and his career went up the ladder because of it.

Now if you dont think campbell, glenn, anderson and al singleton helped shape this team with their hard working team first attitudes to pass down to the young important rookies that were brought in 03 your dead wrong. Ever hear witten talk about campbell? THose guys helped parcells mold the hard work attitude this team has. Put good guys in position to be leaders and everyone else should fall in line. Those guys allowed that.

and singleton was a good solid reliable player here. I am assuming you are one of these fans that needs a superstar at every position and doesnt realize that there has to be low key vet leaders on a team and that is exactly what singleton was.

I wont even comment on bledsoe never being good here. Thats just an absurd comment.

this is why I dont involve myself in the parcells arguments. Most people cant see the forest for the trees. THat is your perogative, feel free to say what you want.

He must be working on some one liners to hit the Cowboys with .... ESPN will love that.

He was on record saying that his first year the only pick he required was Al Johnson because he needed a center to anchor the line.

He fought for and got Jacob Rogers. this is well known.

He wanted to pick Spears over Ware which translates he thought Spears was better.

Skyler Green and the 50 other punt returners he drafted were a direct result of him repeatedly insisting we waste draft picks on returners.

Fasano- Al Groh.... give me a break

Bobby Carpenter is the son of one of his players.

each and every one of those picks can be laid directly at Parcells feet. You can try to him and haw all you want about he should get credit for the other picks but these aforementioned picks are clearly Parcells picks.

Wait a minute.

You told us a couple of days ago that Carpenter was this underrated player who hasn't gotten a fair shake and was the "best player on the field" in the playoff game at Seattle two years ago.

Now, you list him among Parcells' poor draft choices.

I know that dude, but the only comment you could've been responding from me clearly referenced free agents in the context that bpfred had said Parcells free agent acquisitions were spectacular - to which I responded - Seriously, give me a list of those, or a couple. Al Singleton was completely invisible. The guy never made any plays, and very seldom registered a tackle on the stat sheet. He wasn't a 'leader'. Show me any kind of link or article that refers to Al Singleton as a 'leader'.

Drew Bledsoe was just absolutely friggin horrible. You'll never convince me otherwise. One of the happiest moments of the 06 season was when Parcells finally yanked him and put Romo in.

It is easy to forget just how horribly bad things were before Parcells arrived in town.

Parcells put the team on the right track ..., maybe he didn't take the team very far down that track, but he did get the team on the right track.

And that was a huge accomplishment, given how bad things were before he arrived.

ok that is your opinion and it is equal to mine. so we each view his time differently and that is ok.

anyway, and this is not directed to you or anyone individually.

look at 03. We had a secondary they thought was set with the signing of mitchell and drafting of newman. We had 4 corners and woodson and williams at safety. Then mitchell got hurt and wanted to retire in may or june cant remember. That made the team a little thin at the position but they sacrificed being thin their to keep romo on the roster. They knew they were grooming carter but they still kept romo, even when they needed the numbers in camp for more corners and then during the season, they kept romo.

Look at the philosophy of the team this past season. We have a secondary when healthy that should be good with glenn or reeves outside. they cut glenn and then Newman gets hurt and who gets cut? Matt Moore. I personally think that shows a shift in the mindset. I think that parcells staff would have found a way to keep moore on this roster because that mindset was always about building and bringing in young talent.

I am not saying one is right and one is wrong. I am saying that even though there were no expectations in 03 someone was there to say no we cant cut romo. I dont know if it was lee, carthon, payton, parcells or jerry. Last year we were in the same predicament, needed another corner and needed the roster spot for him and even though they are going for it which I understand someone misjudged matt moores abilities. That to me is an early sign of difference within the organization. Maybe it doesnt mean anything maybe it does In the long run but it is definitely a shift in mindset.

When BP came here..his mantra was that "he needed to be able to buy the groceries if he was going to have to cook the meal"..

Dallas gave him carte blanche to do that in all coaching hirings and personel decisions.

He had a 4 year contract and his mission was to get a World Championship by the end of the contract.

He didn't win a single playoff game with the 'meal he cooked'.

While you can certainly point to improvement in the team overall and Jerry jones becoming a better manager because BP was here..

..the bottomline was never met.

BP was paid an exhorbinant amount each season of like $4-5mil/yr. to cook the meal in addition to the incredible amount of money invested in FAs and draftees that never produced for us during BPs reign.

No matter how you cut it..BP failed.

No playoff wins and no Championships in 4+ years.

That's how it gets rated. Not how many players we stockpiled for the future. Not how many players that have gone on to become the core of the present team.

It's about playoff wins and championships.

At this point, Phillips in one year of taking the same team BP had failed with, has taken them at least to an Eastern Division title and 13-3.

Phillips should be given a whole lot more praise than anything BP is given.

Phillips produced.

BP just promised.

Big difference.

There was no public line of communication--I've always thought ESPN hyped that way beyond it's significance to sell commercials. I wonder if anyone on this board knows what level of communication actually occurred behind closed doors. Both Parcells and Jerry Jones have stated bringing Owens onto the team was a mutual decision.

As far as integrating Owens into the gameplan--he was integrated plenty (remember the drops). Owens was more productive in 2007 than 2006 for a lot more than game-planning. He was healthier, and didn't have nearly the drops. The offensive line was significantly better, and enabled more time for Romo. And Romo himself developed more, and was a better QB in 2007 than 2006.

I can understand people disliking Parcells, and wanting him gone. Based on what I see on TV, I'm not sure I could stand him in person after 5 minutes. But that's completely different than giving the man his due. FWIW, I detect inconsistency in your appraisal of Parcells. You give Payton credit for Romo, but blame Parcells for game-planning and play calling. Either Parcells is a control freak or he ain't. I'm guessing he is, and if you give him credit for one, it's only right you give him credit (blame) for the other.

As an example, based on what I see on TV, I don't think I'd like Owens. His pimping of his past QBs disgusted me. And, I was equally disgusted by his sobbing support of Romo (which I suspect of being crocodile tears used to get publicity). But, to give the man his due, he is arguably the best receiver in the game. He makes plays, has an incredible work ethic, and plays hurt. Regardless of what I think of him personally, next to Romo, I think he is the most important player on the team.

One more point about Romo, I give Parcells credit and you give Payton credit. Either way, he was a free agent, who I feel is worth a similar value to Eli Manning (I actually like Romo more). So that is a free agent acquisition with a value roughly equal to the first pick in the draft. Value like that is hard to come by--my concern with Jerry Jones is that he can pick the obvious talents (after they've proven themselves), but with Parcells leaving, we will lose out on the gems before they are widely recognized. Hope I'm wrong about that.
