Just seen on ESPN bottom line that 12 teams are possibly up for blackouts this season. The NFL would be freaking idiots if they make a team black out a game. If you have a 65000 seat stadium and you sell 57000 seats, I dont see what the big deal is. Just give those 8000 seats to kids and charities. It would be a different story if a 70000 seat stadium had 25000 tickets sold. But even then, what is the point of the blackout? How can you acquire fans from the younger generation if they cant see the game. For example, if the Cowboys were blacked out in Texas and the only game of the week that was on was the AFC, and the youth of Texas see just as many Chargers or Broncos games then the home team, how would that help the home team acquiring new fans? By far the dumbest idea ever. I know its been around for a long time but I don't understand it. I'll use Jerry as an example, he has a billion dollars in his bank account and their going to penalize the fan for not dishing out 100 plus bucks to go to the game when they already have tons of money. Greed I say.

50 dollars to park in some stadiums is flat out stealing. Then you have the 8-10 dollar beer( I don't drink but I know a lot of people do) and throw in the 4 dollar pretzel etc etc. You get the idea. I'll ask you this whose stealing from who? They wonder why people download music off the internet. Its rich people bleeding every dime out of the average person and then they throw it back in your face if you watch a game online or download a song off the internet and make you look like the bad guy when really its the other way around. I just paid 280 dollars for Sunday Ticket and the NFL just got I think 2.1 billion dollars for it. That's almost 80 million per team. Don't black out the games after all of that. Where do you draw the line?

#1, blackouts are not something new, its been going on for at least a couple decades or so

#2, I'm not sure you understand it, they wouldnt blackout the Cowboys in the entire state of Texas, only in a certain radius from the teams home city (for some reason 30 miles sticks in my mind, it might be different though)

#3, as the other person mentioned, no Dallas games are going to be blacked out...they havent had one locally since 1989 or 1990 and this season is nearly sold out

I knew that and also I dont even live in Texas. My point was to black out any fan base is wrong considering all the money the NFL is getting and the cost to go to the game.

If they did not have blackouts there would be fewer sellouts. NFL is pretty good about extending the time for a sellout if a team is down to a low number of tickets remaining.

The NFL sees it differently. They either make money from selling tickets, parking, concessions, etc., or they make nothing from the people staying home instead of going to the game.

If someone lives that close to the team they care about, I don't see how they have a right to complain about not seeing the game if they aren't even willing to buy a ticket when they're available.

I agree with this as long as the tax payers money didn't help pay for the stadiums.

always pleasant to see your posts adam;
mickey spagnola touched on this subject when he said 2 teams were already in trouble, jacksonville and carolina;

that the nfl may have to help those teams that are struggling with ticket sales and the struggling economy

Adam, how can you say that when you know everybody can not afford to go to a game.

I think that is a fair and valid point.

Not sure what can be done with Carolina or Jacksonville. Two small markets- and a bad economy. Jacksonville has had trouble for quite a while and they have been consistent winners. Carolina has had more winning seasons then losing. So what can the NFL really do? The cost of tickets and the rest will keep going up- that is reality. I think this is a lesson to the NFL that you really have to hold the line at the size of markets. Its no coicindence that the two markets haveing the most trouble are the two smallest ones in the NFL.

Watching the local NFL team isn't a right.

There are plenty of people who *can* afford a ticket who will go see the game in person if they think they won't be able to see it on TV.

And besides, most owners do what you said originally -- they buy the tickets themselves and donate them to charities, etc.

I'm kind of surprised that Detroit sells as many tickets as they do, considering the team and the economy up there, unless the companies are buying tickets for employees.

As far as blackouts go, I remember them from the '70's, so they're really nothing new.

The taxpayers get repaid by the money that the stadium brings into the local economy. That's how the taxpayers' portion of the costs is determined. If having games on TV for free was part of the deal, the taxpayers would be contributing more.

There are lots of things that people can't afford. That doesn't mean they should be given away to everyone for free.

And many of those things are a lot more important than a football game, too.

supply and demand is the most fundamental concept of economics. tickets are way too expensive so the market corrects itself. if the league prices its way out of the average joe's budget they can expect a blackout. maybe we can expect discount tickets next or face more blackouts. something is got to give.

why would that matter? if you pay taxes to fund the stadium, then you probably live close enough to go...if not dont complain if/when the game is blacked out
