You are correct, business success is way more important to Jerry and his offspring than actually competing for championships.

You want proof? The team has not advanced past the divisional round of the playoffs in 26 seasons, but the value of the franchise has increased exponentially over this same time span.

This did not happen just by accident, some fans dont want to accept that winning rings is just not that important to Jerry compared with making money. All Jerry has to do is make sure the team is just competitive enough to keep the fans showing up to the stadium so he can sell more marketing rights.
We all have our opinions about Jerry and I certainly respect yours.

My thought is no one wants to win another Super Bowl more than Jerry does. I believe if he could buy one (with cash, not signings), he would pay an insane amount of money to do so. Jerry's ego is so massive that he wants to show the world that his way is the right way.

Jerry's ego is also the reason we probably won't win another for a very long time. He actually believes his way of doing things is the right way. His ego refuses to let him think otherwise. I bet every night he dreams of that moment when he can finally say "I told you so".

Just my opinion on Jerry.

wish we would either commit to tanking or try to win. This crap we're doing will get us to 7-8 wins no playoffs or stumble inn and get knocked out first round, this roster can't win, but if we were to address a few needs it could

wise move not having a viable swing tackle and back up plan knowing most probably Smith was going to miss time... very wise move....NOT

I think it’s a bit too soon to take this stance. They had Tyron and Steele as starters and were happy with them. They drafted Ball and the guy this year to develop. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to see what the two young guys have in camp before making a move for a veteran. I’m sure they were hoping for serious improvement from Ball. The situation now looks bad because Ball didn’t really improve and Tyron is gone. Hindsight is 20/20 and it’s easy to criticize now knowing all of this but they have time and cap space to rectify the current situation. If they do nothing and it falls apart against Tampa, then yeah, they will deserve everything the get. I actually think the plan all along was to evaluate Ball in camp and add a vet OT after final cuts or after week 1 when his salary isn’t guaranteed if needed. I for one don’t see that as an unreasonable plan. It didn’t work so now it’s all on what they do between now and week 1. If they just throw Ball out there and he sucks, then I’ll be the first one criticizing their poor decision.

Missing a few games and going down for the year in a half padded practice are two different things.

Nobody cares that you think you are so smart bc our All Pro LT got hurt.
Your comment doesn't even make sense. I'm guessing you were one of the morons arguing Smith isn't an injury risk? Missing even one game means we need a backup plan in place and we all knew he'd miss more than one game a week ago just like we know the sun will rise in the morning. Now we just know he'll probably miss them all. Little has changed other than those with their head in the sand can no longer pretend he won't miss time.

My comment makes plenty of sense.

The Cowboys were fine with him missing 3-6 games and felt confident they could fill in and be fine with what they had. The fact you don't agree doesn't mean they are wrong.

Not many teams can overcome a franchise LT going down, regardless of how good you are in franchise mode in Madden.

Having a 'viable swing tackle' wouldnt have resolved anything. A swing can cover a couple of games, but not the whole season. We dont have a viable LT on the roster (same as last year). They hoped Ball or Waletzko was going to be the swing tackle, which may have been passable...but certainly not a starter for the majority of the season.

I dont see what we could have done to proactively mitigate this injury, at least we've got CAP and there are FA LT's available.....it appears that Fisher wasnt going to sign a RT or Swing Tackle contract (if he's turned down 9 offers and wasnt going to sign on the cheap), I bet he'd take a starting LT gig.

Edit: dues to Voch just listening him, he's suggesting the Fisher would now be more inclined to sign now he's going to be a LT on a potential decent team

No. Roster building doesn't assume everything will break your way. Our LT was never going to play 17 games and never will again. Our RT is a young guy who was really bad two years ago and was ok last year. We all (or at least most of us) thought he had potential and should be pretty good this year (and still do) but we don't yet know for sure. Neither of the two guys you mentioned ever played in an NFL game and as of two weeks ago we saw Ball was horrible not bad, but horrible (actually we heard this all camp from those around the team) and Waletzko may need surgery. Even if htey were waiting it was clear desperate action was needed then. When you know you will need them to protect your $40M QB you don't risk your season on hoping. You make sure you have insurance. Better to have too much depth than none at all. And now we need a starter. Even if we move T Smith 73 we need a better Guard.

That is absolutely ridiculous roster building. To play Josh Ball for 3 - 6 games or McGovern who was beaten out by Williams if you move Smith should be an emergency last resort, not a plan for 3-6 games. One of your most important positions and your most injury prone player. It should be the first position you make sure you have an adequate backup at.

Again, your opinion.

Having 4th and 5th round young OTs as backups isn't bad roster building. It is a necessity in this day and age in the NFL.

Yeah and two weeks ago we knew one stunk and the other was injured and that neither was a dependable option to watch your $40M QBs blindside for this year

But again how does signing a 'Swing Tackle', improve that situation?? A 'Swing Tackle's not going to improve the LT situation sufficiently to give us a chance, A Swing Tackle is normally a RT that could spot start in Left.

There is NO internal option that's going to give a season at LT and better available options Eric Fisher wasnt going to sign as a swing or RT (hence the 9 offers he's turned down).

And...

In those two weeks, Ball has gotten progressively better and WellLETSGO is now playing.

Where are these dependable solutions you think are out there anyway?

sorry to diagree. they had ball for over a year. maybe last training camp he was injured, but subsequently he has been around and they should have known. so the internal evaluations failed. and you should never totally bank on young draftees. because they are less than 50/50 proposition. minimally they should have had a veteran added. just to mitigate the risks.

a backup by definition is never as good as a starter. a Swing tackle has ability to play both sides and can be a starter....having a back up LT, wouldn't necessarily mean he would be bettter than the swing tackle.

they Hoped Ball....and Waltezko is a rookie.

you never bank on a rookie or a youngster, specially those drafted in lower rounds. its less than a 50/50 proposition at best. we could have, should have had a veteran tackle....it wasn't a money issue. it was a choice.

The same way signing any backup at any position helps. If/when a starter gets hurt the backup becomes the starter. How does that not help us?
Who knows what Fisher would have done and we all know it comes mostly down to money. He might have thought he could beat out Steele or he might have thought Tyron has zero chance to play a full season. But now he would be a starter so the point is dated and moot.

So (and @Jarntt ) which veteran LT was available and capable of playing the whole 17 games but was willing to play RT (and presumably take RT/Swing Tackle money?

They knew that Tyron would miss games, but gambled on it only being a handful of games....but had the CAP to sign a replacement LT in season (if it was for an extended period of time), or as will now pan out someone like Fisher.

What? Did you watch the last preseason game? He might have been worse and that's against 2nd and 3rd stringers
And Waletzko is still a possibility for surgery. It seems like you are just making things up

You don’t know if a 2nd year player who was injured last year has improved and can hold the spot until you see him perform in camp and preseason games. It simply isn’t unreasonable to see what you have in 2 young drafted players knowing you have cutdowns and available veterans to comb through if needed. Signing mediocre vets that only take snaps away in camp and preseason doesn’t seem very smart in my book and you certainly aren’t throwing big money for a backup. People used to complain when they did this very thing. Called them progress stoppers and wanted to see the young draftees get more reps. My biggest point is that we are arriving at the point where the plan either worked or didn’t and it’s what they do between now and opening kickoff that matters the most. If they do nothing and Ball collapses, then I’ll be the first to criticism their bad decision to not sign someone after cutdowns. Until then, I’ll wait and see what happens. Not every plan you have for a position works out. It’s how you adjust when it doesn’t that matters the most. Let’s see what they do first.

You mean like the this years two Conference teams?

But i'll wait for you to name those LT's we should of signed prior to the Tyron injury, those LT's that were willing to be Tyron's understudy and would move to and presumably be paid RT money?

I think you'll find the best option is Eric Fisher.....who probably wouldnt want to be second fiddle to Tyron and move to RT (and will want, as he always did, wants top dollar).

what do you mean two conference teams?

regardless, once again, we are at a point with Jerry running the show that we might end up throwing away a season. the OL is a mess, there is no denying it.
