Cowboys Owner Jones Gives His 2-Cents, and Guess What? He Is Right—Again

by Chad Hensley

There are a million things one can say about Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, but there is one thing that is becoming indisputable.

The guy knows which players on his team should be starting.

Jones' history of making great calls began back before the Cowboys' Dynasty of the 1990's.

Ex-Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson wanted to start his quarterback from the University of Miami, Steve Walsh.

Jerry wanted Troy Aikman.

Three Super Bowl rings later, Jerry was right.

The media and fans laughed when Jerry said Miles Austin would pick up Terrell Owens slack at the wide receiver position in 2009.

Austin has 847 yards receiving and nine TD's since his breakout game over the Kansas City Chiefs—a span of 8 games.

In a 16 game season, that projects to 1694 yards and 18 TD's.

Now obviously Austin had the record breaking game against the Chiefs, but even if you take that game out he would have a projected 1364 yards receiving and 14 TD's.

It is safe to say we will take "Smiles" Austin over T.O.—on and off the field.

And now it is reported by ESPN that Jones believes Marion Barber III should be finishing games, not starting them.

"I think the real question is, should he be finishing rather than beginning? In his Pro Bowl year, where he had his best year, [Barber was] finishing the game. If you recall, Julius Jones started the game. We injected the quickness of his speed there early."

About a month ago, I wrote:

"I also believe it is time to let Felix Jones and Tashard Choice begin games and let Marion Barber III end them. Let Barber return to the role in which he was a Pro Bowler, and let the young guys establish the running game early. "

I know that other Cowboys writers on Bleacher Report have written similar things.

Barber should get the ball in red zone situations throughout the game, and in 2nd half as they pound the defensive line late in the game. Jones and Choice should start the game.

It seems that Jerry—and even the fans—get this, but unfortunately not the coaches who make those decisions.

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of things that Jerry can improve on. Example A would be hiring good "football people" and then letting them make the football decisions.

The emphasis is on good because right now that isn't true on offense, especially at the offensive coordinator position. Jerry needs to step in when his team is being mis-managed as bad as it is on offense right now.

In the end, the guy is right more often than not when it comes to what talent should be on the field. Saying that Barber should finish games is just another example.

Damn.. even though I make fun of Jerry myself, this writer has a clear, obvious, and sore point for me. Maybe I'm wrong.. maybe Jerry does know talent - some what. He did say last year Austin would replace/pickup a good portion of T.O's slack.. and I laughed at Jerry when he said that. I have read many times that he also said Aikman should be starting.

There are some very valid points in that blog. If Jerry deserves the criticism, then he deserves the praise too.

Hey, the man also thought we took a step back when we started Romo in 06: Signed, True JJ lover.

Who wanted to draft Demarcus Ware over Spears?

Jerry is MUCH better GM than he is given credit for. Like all GM's, he has made some boneheaded mistakes, but he's also made some very good decisions. It's unfortunate that he gets all the blame when something goes wrong, and no credit when things go right.

BTW, we wouldn't have Ware or Ratliff if Jerry hadn't overruled Parcells.

I must have missed something. I thought this article was about which players on our current team should be starting and not who should be drafted where????

Alright, let's get it going Felix!

He never said we took a step back. He just didn't like the idea of starting a new QB mid-season when he thought the team that started that season has a chance to make the playoffs. It makes perfect sense, even if you were rooting for Romo to start that season.

99% of the time, switching QBs mid-season isn't a good thing.

13 years without a playoff win is an inescapable fact, and as such, means Jerry Jones is one of the three worst GMs in football.

Can't argue with history. It just seems like Jerry gives his people too much rope. Garrett was supposedly an up-and-comer head coach. I don't think he would be considered for any vacant OC job this winter. Gotta give Jerry some credit I guess for not making Garrett a head coach.

On the other hand, what has Phillips done to warrant Jerry's support?

One thing is clear. Felix Jones and Tashard Choice are not getting the ball nearly enough, not even close.

I would run the daylights out of them, both of them.

They would be looking for oxygen.

Meh, Quincy Carter, Dave Campo, Chan Gailey, Chad Huchinson, on and on and on.

Nice selective memory there. Jerry also wanted Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchinson, Drew Henson and Peerless Price to start too.

Just let the coaches do their jobs Jerry. Have faith in your hires.

As long as writers big up Jerry like this he will never step down. It's nice to have these little fluff articles to big up Jerry's ego.....

How right was Jerry about RW?

.

This is b/s and is not true at all. It's been addressed numerous times too.

I love it when our fans act like Jerry Jones is the only guy that makes poor decisions in the front office in the NFL, like the other 31 owners and GMs get it right 10 times out of 10.

And all this time I thought Jerra was well-meaning but an idiot when it comes to socks and jocks.

As usual, you have it wrong. Your reasoning is supremely idiotic and unfathomable.

Fans here in general, Cassy, could give a flying squat to what other owners are doing.

But when it comes to the Cowboys, fans care a lot about decisions -- good or bad -- re America's Team.

It might surprise you, Cassy, but unlike you, most fans here are not preoccupied with the 31 other owners, just the Cowboys owner.
