It's the 26th pick of the draft. There will be potential weaknesses to every player.
I trust Quinn in coaching up/getting the most out of players.

There's going to be a risk he never develops a pass rush, but that's the reason he went below Jalen Carter and wasn't picked higher.

Defense is funny. The better you are at it, the less you play.

Dallas got extended drives on them many times last year because they couldn't stop the run on early downs. That improved when they got Hankins but only when he was in. Those extended drives (like the 10 play 91 yard drive that sealed it for SF in the playoff) really hurt.

Taken to an extreme, if Dallas' opponent had the ball 8 times in a game and they went 3 and out ever time, that would only be 24 defensive snaps. Mazi playing 1st and 2nd down, rotating with Hankins might leave Mazi only getting EIGHT snaps. Some people would complain about using a 1st round pick on an 8 snap player instead of celebrating the shut out victory.

Not to mention that Levis will never be as good as Dak.
Dak lost a football game to Brock Purdy who was the last pick in the draft.

I don’t know where the Dak confidence comes from at this point lol.

We’re in year 8 and the dude has played in an optimal situation since he stepped foot into the NFL but if we’re missing a MLB on defense it’s used as an excuse for Dak.

We need this team of perfection while oh by the way paying him the money to be the answer and not a problem.

He was the 13th best player on their board. They literally took bpa.
It didn’t seem that way in the war room. They weren’t exactly running the card up.

As an aside I’m not a pick hater. I’ve loved what they’ve done in the first over the years and only didn’t like Taco..way right.. and Frederick…way wrong

This is the same write up for every Nose Tackle ever.
He will need to keep his weight in check while building even more strength.
He is a 2-down middle of the line anchor which Dallas will surround with 3 rabid dog pass rushers.
He brings an element they simply do not have.

Last year in the snaps Hankins played the defense was much better.
And Hankins was off the street.
This pick makes a ton of sense even if you don't think he was the 26th best player in this class.

I’m just saying what they are saying. From
What I’ve read the talk was over drafting offense or defense…..wanted a tackle who can play guard. Scouts wanted Mazi being he was the highest on their board.

CowboysZone LOYAL Fan

I watched about half of this and saw him getting little penetration and almost every play he got stood up. Plays too high IMO.

I am pretty trusting of McClay and DQ though. Wish our 1st rounder wasn't someone needing to be coached up. I wanted a plug and play OL. but a weakness was addressed.

Patience young Luke !

Probably. I didn’t mind D I just thought Porter Jr or Nolan Smith made us more dangerous.I would have been fine with OL too

Some basic facts:
Michigan was ranked 7th last year in FBS run defense. They gave up less than 100 yards per game.
PFF scored Mazi Smith an 83.1 at run defense.

The guy is nearly identical in size to Jalen Carter in height and arm length and wingspan. He is 10 pounds heavier.

Dane summary:
SUMMARY: A two-year starter at Michigan, Smith was the linchpin of the defensive line at nose tackle in coordinator Jesse Minter’s scheme, playing up and down the line. Although his backfield production is underwhelming, he is a better pass rusher than his career sacks (0.5) would indicate (finished second on the team with 25 pressures in 2022). Ranked No. 1 on Bruce Feldman’s Freaks List, Smith plays with extraordinary power to welcome double teams or dismantle single blockers with his patient eyes and torqued hands. His football instincts are well developed to feel blocking pressures and track the football, however, he needs to be a more controlled finisher as a tackler. Smith might never light up the stat sheet with backfield production, but he will be an above-average NFL run defender and flashes pass rush potential with his natural leverage, body quickness and remarkable power. He fits multiple fronts, but he is ideally suited as a shade in the middle of the line, similar in ways to a bigger Brandon Mebane.

Really? He's easily the best interior lineman on the team now and you don't think it does anything to improve the team?
No he's not. Osa is one of the, probably, 10-15 best DTs in the league.

Mazi, as he is right now, is just redundant with Hankins. It's nothing you don't have, and it's a skillset that doesn't really matter. However, if you draft him in the first round, the plan has to be to use him for much more than just stuffing the run. He's such a good athlete, they should ask him to lose a little bit of weight and be much more penetrating and disruptive.

Seems like these NFL teams don’t value them like these mocks do.

Nolan is a small edge rusher who wasn’t going to make an impact this year. Same goes for Porter unless there was an injury. Only positions he get can come right in and help now are guard and dt.

The biggest hole in this D was run stopping. They just got the best run stopper in the draft.

Yeah I’m confused lol. We in theory just shored up or tried to… the biggest hole on the roster we had coming into the offseason. Is it the player people don’t like here?

Seems like we addressed our biggest need.
