Bob Sturm has been great to listen to these last 2 days about McCarthy. He said he has watched every single snap of both McCarthy and Garrett's career. He said he wrote an extensive article in The Athletic on McCarthy. Starting with his younger years and how he got to Green Bay. I wish I could read it.

In this past segment, he shot down these comparisons of him and Garrett and I had no idea how different they were in their approaches. Here are a few differences and some of the stat rankings may be off a little since its off top of my head.

On 1st and 10, Jason was 1st in the NFL running the ball. McCarthy was 32nd.

On 4th and 4+ in the first 3 quarters (Bob took out the 4th quarter ones due to desperation), Garrett is pretty much dead last in attempts and McCarthy is at the top.

While Garrett has only coached 76% of McCarthy's career, he has less total challenges than McCarthy has challenges won. That's pretty crazy. He said Garrett was way too conservative with challenges and took the approach its better to save them and then a lot of the time, that time never came so they were wasted. 45 total challenges in 10 years seems very low, seeing as you get 2 per game x16 x10.

On 2nd and 10, McCarthy was towards the top of the league in passing the ball. Garrett was towards the bottom.

That is the biggest difference for me. The approach on 1st and 2nd downs. 2nd and 10 was a running down for us. Never failed. And we would always get into 3rd down, many times 3rd and long. McCarthy actually prefers to pass on 2nd and 10. Now lets see if that changes now that he has Zeke and Dak as opposed to Rodgers and no real run game.

Bob said 2 of the biggest reasons McCarthy gets the label as being a Garrett like conservative coach is a few instances. One being the 2014 NFC championship game against Seattle. Where he kicked a FG on 4th and goal from the 1. They scored on 5 possessions before the 4th qtr and only had 19 points. 1 TD and 4FGs. I remember that game and he definitely went the route of Turtle Tom and tried to run the clock more than trying to actively win the game. I thought that was a huge blunder. They should have easily won that game.

And the other instances is he had a tendency to get conservative in playoff games.

But he definitely does not run an antiquated early 90s offense like Garrett.

If all those stats are true, then I'm glad we finally have a coach with balls to play to win.

Yea, definitely glad I bought the athletic package for 50 or 60% off during black friday.

Quite a bit of good content for a handful of teams. Especially college recruiting for some smaller teams

Another cool trivial, from the Athletic, was that for his 204 game tenure in Green bay, only the Pats had a higher turnover differential during that same stretch. Packers during his time were +97. +6 in 18 playoff games too

This is the perspective I wanted. Not the national perspective or ours. But someone who has watched both coaches and can distinguish. Now Bob is not saying McCarthy is the best ever and as no issues. Every coach outside of Belichik is going to be criticized and usually for the same reasons.

But the comparisons to Garrett he said is not even close to being true.

Read the article about McCarthy when you get a chance and let us know what you think about it. Or is there a way to do a week trial? I'd do it just to read this. Bob Sturm has always been great on his blogs but now all that goes to The Athletic now.

Still catching up on all the content. Bob McGinn(packers writer) just posted one about why he thinks McCarthy can work in Dallas. Don't think I saw a week trial but to be honest once I saw the sale I just jumped on it.

    perhaps for now

I think a real HC can get the real Zeke back and there are no better security blankets fir a QB than a great RB and a great TE

And yet it’s not because Ted Thompson never allowed McCarthy the advantage of having a stud RB. Now McCarthy has one. And if he’s studied all offseason the trends and the analytics behind all the good offenses, he has a bag of mixed goodies at his fingertips, RB included with Zeke and now Pollard.

Mike is probably giddy about the possibilities. At least he should be. Doubt he’s fretting over contracts.

One guy went to Princeton riding on his dad's coat tail and then got everything given to him without working for it. Including his coaching career
The other worked at the Pennsylvania turnpike toll booth to support himself while working as a coaching assistant for free to get his foot in the door.

One got a free ride, the other worked himself up the coaching ladder. White collar vs Blue collar.
That should tell you the difference between the two psyche.

Thinking the same. McCarthy had his success with no run game at all. In fact, he did not care about the run. And as Bob Sturm said, the difference in projected yards passing vs run is very wide. It makes much more sense to pass in today's game. With all the rules now and how offenses run. Yet we wanted to run an outdated run first offense and spend a gigantic amount on RB and OL. Which in today's game, is not ideal.

I am hoping McCarthy can get Zeke involved in the pass game. It's been criminal how under used Zeke has been in our pass game. Seems every team I watch utilize the screen and RB in the pass game except us.

Didn't know he posted here. That's cool! Bob Sturm has been my favorite radio host for over 2 decades now. I listened to him when he had the solo evening show on The Ticket. He just got here from Wisconsin. I love his knowledge and passion and he translates very well to writing seeing how much he loves the details.

I don't see McCarthy committing to a heavy run game. One of two things will happen, IMO. Either he will get pass happy with Dak and Zeke will become a much smaller part of the Offensive game plan or Dak will fail miserably and McCarthy will be gone because he failed to develop Dak. Now if that later happens, I don't see us moving on for a good 3 seasons, which basically puts Zeke at the end of his career, in terms of being able to dominate. I just don't really see the contract working out.

Don't care what he is fretting over. Doesn't change the fact that we payed out a lot of money for Zeke and I'm not sure how it works out for the better if we don't really use him as the focus.

Oh yea I’m a big fan of his too

He used to create a thread that was a link to his articles each week. Great great reads. I miss those a lot.

I think he quit posting them when the DMN said we couldn’t link to their website anymore
