Im sure its been discussed, but has anyone else thought about the possibilities if we would of taken Cromartie instead, who was picked right after Carpenter?

Minimum threepeat

We also took Fasano when Hester was there. Then Traded Fasano for a 4th, and Take a TE who may or may not be as good in the 2nd.

Oh well, hard to complain too much, the team is loaded

San Diego rolled the dice big time on Cromartie.....he was injured at FSU, a serious one, if I am not mistaken. I cant believe he was even a first round pick.....

I wanted Manny Lawson....When he was still there at 22 and we took Carpenter I wanted to puke. I was watching the draft with a friend who is a Niners fan, and he wanted Lawson too.......well he was grinnin like a possum eatin poop when the Niners nabbed Lawson a few picks later.

I have learned over the years to not covet certain players, cause when I do, it is written in stone that they will never be Cowboys.....Thank goodness I never liked Irvin, Aikman, or Maryland in college.

You and me both. I will never be into a draft again as much as I was into the last one, it was utterly pointless.

The team always does something different, and it's been working so far, so forget what I want.

We all did a bunch of mocks, and not a single one had us taking a TE in the 2nd, much less two RB's in the first 4 rounds.

Cromartie was well on his way to being a bust last year before he broke out. We shall see. As for Carp, i can name several games where he played well when given a chance. i can think of only one where he played poorly and he was hurt int aht game. Its too bad that that was the game that he was being evaluated.

Marion, I disagree that Bennett may not be as good as Fasano. I liked Fasano in college and was glad when we took him. Unfortunately, some of the pundits (Spags, etc.) said their "inside sources" said Fasano was having trouble understanding the Jason Garrett offense.

Many people think that "if A&M wasn't allergic to passing" (I think it was "Ray in Fort Worth" that said this on Talking Cowboys) Bennett would have been a 1st round pick. I think we are lucky that he decided to come out early, because if he'd stayed for his senior year under Mike Sherman he may have been too good for us to have a chance at in 2009. Time will tell...

Why do all of a sudden I feel as if I'm going to see an incarnate of the Jammer vs. Williams debacle of '02?

Gee, we could have had Clinton Portis, Dwight Freeney, John Henderson, or Lito Sheppard!

Hell, we could have had Eric Crouch!

The situation for Carpenter isn't unique, but it is uniquely manageable. Play the poor kid. Give him a chance to shine. It's easy to label someone a bust if you move him around from different positions. It's even easier when you move that same guy around and three of the four players are very good to Pro-Bowl caliber players.

Now, if you factor in that we've added another Pro-Bowl caliber player onto the squad, his chances of seeing the field are minimal to none.

Carpenter just can't get on the field. Parcells screwed up by loading at the position. Add the drafting of Spencer to an already loaded corps puts the squeeze on Carp even more.

If the exodus continues, we'll be saying the same about Spencer that we're saying about Carpenter now. What's done is done. All Phillips is basically saying is, "Look, we want all of our players to succeed. But, our incumbents are playing so well that our young guys aren't going to get as much time as they need. My goal for this team is to put them in the best position to win. Even if it means strapping our young players of time and experience."

When you think about it... how many guys... first round "studs" or franchise players were deemed failures by the teams that drafted them only to find success in other places?

Bobby Carpenter can very well be an incarnation of Dat Nguyen and we'd never know because of his apparent lack of getting on the field.

That's not true at all.
Cromartie was being prepped for starting in his rookie year and played quite well in his brief moments on the field as a #3 CB. So well that he broke into the starting lineup his 2nd season.
He was also used primarily on KR that season where he averaged 30 yards a return.

It's dumb however to cry over who we could have had or should have had unless you honestly wanted someone else on draft day other than Carp. Of course we all want Cromartie now. But did you then? Would you have used a 1st on an injured DB from FSU who had seen on limited playing time in college?

I on record wanted cromartie but 70% of the board here never heard of him (how I dont know) and was clowned because he was 'unproven'.

My arguement was that you cant teach talent and sure enough talent prevailed..

That is utter BS.............. 70% of the people on this board who follow the draft knew EXACTLY who Cromartie was. Where are you getting this from????

How can you be on your way to being a bust when you're still within your first 3 years? The only reason that he wasn't on the field before that is that San Diego had already invested alot of money in the starting secondary. It's called investment of committment in the business world. This is where being a fan of a particular college team is useful. I'm an FSU fan and I actually saw Cromartie in college and he was DOMINANT against everyone he played against on a very bad FSU team. Lest you think "Big deal! Who does FSU play?", remember that we play the Gators and Miami every year. We play one of the toughest schedules every year playing in the ACC and Cromartie was the one bright spot for the Seminoles his last couple of years. :rantoff:

Hindsight is a beautiful thing. As soon as you find a way to allow Coaches, scouts, and owners to see into the future, and know for sure how a pick will turn out, you let them know ok?

Thanks Tarzan. I seem to remember that the 70% you speak of actually wanted Cromatrie but secretly got together in the NFL-Zone and decided it would be much more fun to Clown you. I don't have any posts handy to support this, but I'm sure if you go back and do hours of thorough research to review each post made around that time, you will see this to be true.

What's next? A thread about whether we should have taken Merriman over Ware? Or for a real blast from the past, maybe we can talk about how we should have picked Steven Jackson instead of Julius Jones.
