According to Espn's box score Carp had 3 Solo tackles. I don't remember him giving up any pass plays on 3rd down.

Discuss.

I noticed two very solid plays back-to-back by Carpenter, and a tackle on special teams.

He had a very, very nice open-field tackle one-on-one that would have likely been 6 for Tampa had he whiffed.

He had a solid game from what I could tell, though obviously judging ILBs takes a much closer look.

Yeah, he was good here and there, but a lot of the big runs were partly due to his lack of power taking on the blocks. The big 35 yarder by Cadillac was a busted assignment by Carpenter. The leap over TD by Ward could have been his stop too. He leap and met him in mid air, but got knocked back instead of being the bigger hitter and driving him backwards.

He also laid down on the Cadillac TD on the goal line, tripping up Brooking in the process.

So all in all, good pass coverage and open field stuff by Carpenter today, but sorry in the box run defending.

He made some key special team tackles. Finally I see that first round pick was well spent. Thanks Bill!

Carp played OK IMO, but he will most likely be getting a fine for the hit in Leftwich below the knee. Not dirty, but still illegal.

One thing I did notice...was that Carpenter was in the goal line defense. It was right after the challenged TD was reversed and then the Bucs ran the next play in for the TD. My question is: What the heck is a "finesse" linebacker doing in the goal line package?!

Wade had the defense in a nickel on 2nd down. After Tampa ran the ball down our throat. I was wondering waht Wade was thinking Tampa was going to do on 2nd down?

because Jason Williams is hurt...I guarantee Carp is a bandage right now for certain packages - he may be the nickel guy but he is filling for Jason Williams' roles.

Because the nickel is not only for 3rd down. The nickel is a defense for 3 WR sets. So if Tampa marches out 3 WRs, then we're going to match their personnel with the nickel package.

If we keep our base D out there, then you'd have a LB or Safety covering a WR instead of a CB. Would you rather have Spencer lining up across a WR on 2nd down or Scandrick?

How did that work? My point was when a team is running through you like a hot knife you should not put the nickel in on 2nd down against their standard set. Bad call.

because if they see that LB match-up they will pass the ball...are you really serious asking this question? Base D vs 3WR set you will lose that battle all day....Geez....

That's not a nickel.

That's a 3-3-5, with a run blitz.

I guess if you say Ware running late before the snap to lineup on RE standing up is 3-3-5 or 4-2? The point is being made that failing to match up with base personel was not the best choice, since we were not slowing their running game. Especially when some stated they we in a 3WR set not base offense.

Ok, here is a link proving a TE is in motioning with base personel group of 2WR's/2 TE's against our nickel and the result was the 35 yard run. Around 38 second mark.

Thanks!

I think the nickel was in to maybe get a DB on Kellen Winslow, but if you look more closely in that play they beat the blitz by Alan Ball(not sure who that was) If that blitzer took a better angle to the inside he would had a shot to get the RB down. Also BC showed why he's isn't a starter in this defense...he couldn't shed his block.
