The Boston Globe speculates the Patriots could be interested in Cowboys inside linebacker Scott Shanle.

New England needs linebacker depth and Shanle has been rumored to be available. The Patriots would probably trade one of their backup tackles for him.

Trade Rumors Heating Up
by Staff Report of TheRanchReport.com, August 16, 2006 at 3:25pm ET

Scott Shanle Profile

According to several sources, Cowboys linebacker Scott Shanle could be on the trading block, TheRanchReport.com has learned.

One team reportedly interested in Shanle is New England.

In fact, one rumor making its way around NFL circles has Shanle being trade to New England for either OT Ryan O'Callaghan (6-7, 360) or OL Brandon Gorin (6-6, 308).

Bill Parcells even came out publicly last week giving full support to the idea the Cowboys could be looking to trade for more talent on the offensive line or at wide receiver.

"I've got the pro guys looking and we are talking with some teams," he said. "I think we are trying to be proactive on it and see which teams could be heavy in that area.

"We are heavy at a spot or two, so maybe we can do some business."

I meant a pats fan and not a cowboys fan. I knew he was a pats fan but didnt he also become a boys fan? Maybe the shanle trade will completely sway him from the cowboys.

I think getting ocallaghan for Shanle would be pretty sweet. he did a great job run blocking at Cal, he just needs to stay in shape and he could be a beast.

Since we have more depth at ILB with Bobby Carpenter, Shanle does seem like he's a good candidate to be traded.

Everything in this report was 'speculated upon' earlier today on this board.

Then he could go back to their board and bug them. :D

Seriously any player we get for Shanle is a bonus since he didn't cost us anything to begin with.

There is pretty much no way we are getting O'Callaghan out of there. They just drafted the kid with a 5th round pick. Does anyone really think that Shanle has that sort of value?

I dont think Shanle is, but if the Patriots have extra depth at one spot and need players at something else then I don't think its a stretch at all.

I'd say that smart teams who have depth would rather trade a journeyman vet than a rookie draft pick

Gorin started for them in 2004. A tackle that started for a SB winning team. If we could get that for shanle it would be a true felony theft.

Ryan O'Callaghan OL 6'6 344 California

By: Robert Davis

Ryan O'Callaghan has really come on the last two years. Even though he played early on in his career, he truly began to shine as a junior in 2004, and continued his standout play as a senior.
Once O'Callaghan locks on to you, it's all over. With his massive frame and strength, he has the ability to dominate at the point of attack. He is a mauler in every sense of the word. He combines his size advantage with excellent toughness, and he just continues to fight and claw even if he does not lock on off the snap. He will also bring some versatility to his NFL team, as he has a ton of experience at tackle, but projects more to guard at the next level.
All of his experience is at tackle, but he may lack the agility and athleticism to play outside on a consistent basis at the NFL level. He may have to learn to play inside at guard. His height is nice on the outside, but it means he is going to have to work extra hard at keeping his pads low against shorter tackles in the NFL.
O'Callaghan is a very good offensive line prospect. With his ability to dominate in the running game, he is going to make a fine right guard or right tackle at the next level. He lacks the ideal athleticism for the league, but his ability as a run blocker will find him a home on someone's roster. He should hear his name called at some point near the end of Day One.

SUMMARY
O'Callaghan is a player that was a little confusing to grade thoroughly because he played tackle at California and will need to make the switch to guard to be effective in the NFL. He does a good job keeping his feet moving and staying after and finishing blocks. He has the size, strength and long arms to be very effective blocking in a small area. His instincts and short-area quickness help him to overcome his lack off athleticism. His lack of athleticism hinders his ability to adjust and block a moving target well. While he lacks the foot quickness and athleticism to be a good starting offensive tackle, he defnitely has the physical tools to play quard in the NFL. Overall, O'Callaghan is big and strong and will become a good offensive guard who does a solid, yet unspectacular job. His lack of athleticism limits him to playing guard in the NFL.

CRITICAL FACTORS
Size Play Strength Play Speed Initial Quickness Competes Instincts
7.0 6.5 5.0 6.0 6.5 6.5

STRONG POINTS
O'Callaghan is a big, strong offensive lineman with all the tools to be a productive guard in the NFL. He does a good job of getting off the ball and set to block quickly and when he is aggressive and quick with his hands, he can keep the defensive linemen on the line of scrimmage. He drives defensive linemen down the line of scrimmage on down/side blocks and can consistently eliminate his man from play. He has the foot quickness to slide and shuffle decently side to side in a small area. He is a very smart and instinctive offensive lineman who consistently has shown the ability to respond quickly to defensive line stunts/loops and delayed blitzes.

WEAKNESSES
O'Callaghan is a limited athlete who lacks the foot quickness, agility and flexibility to block with leverage and to chip defensive tackles and get through to the second level. He struggled producing at a high level when he has to move his feet and block a lot out in space. He can get through in time in most situations, but struggles to adjust and block well in the move. He has a bad habit of bending at the waist and leaning to make contact instead of moving his feet, which leads to him falling off and losing the block.

POSITIONAL FACTORS
Grade Category Comments/Description
5.0 Foot Agility He lacks good foot agility, but has enough to move and adjust well in a small area.
6.0 Initial Quickness He does a good job of getting off the ball and set to block quickly. He gets his hands on the defensive tackle quick and hard.
6.5 Play Strength He has play strength to stand up power rushers and can get movement on in-line run blocks.
6.0 Run Block In-Line He can be very good, but gets over-aggressive at times, which leads to him over-extending and falling off blocks.
5.5 Run Block Space He can get to the second level quickly to the seal block linebacker, but lacks the quicknesss/speed to pull and lead outside runs.
6.0 Pass Protection In a small area, his size, strength, long arms and competitiveness let him do a good job in pass protection.
6.5 Quick Set-Pass Protection When he sets quick and short, he can stop his man in his tracks with a good, hard punch.
5.5 Shuffle & Slide He does a solid job in a small area, but struggles when he is forced to move his feet a lot out in space.
6.0 Punch/Hand-Use Not always aggressive with the punch, but does get his hands on the defensive lineman quickly to slow initial rush.
6.0 Vs. Power Rush When he is quick with his hands, he can stand up power rushers in their tracks and keep them on the line of scrimmage.
5.5 Vs. Speed Rush He generally does a good job in a small area, but struggles when he has to adjust side to side very fast.
5.5 Errors Nothing terrible, but over-aggressiveness leads to him falling off and losing blocks more than he should.

ATHLETIC ABILITY Section Grade: 5.0
O'Callaghan is a limited athlete, which is why he will be better suited to playing guard in the NFL than playing tackle as he did at California. For a guard, he has the foot quickness to get out of his stance and into blocking position quickly. He can slide side to side well in a small area and can initially slide quickly in one direction to cut off quick, inside pass-rush move, but he lacks agility to move well out in space. He can get through to the second level decently to seal block the linebacker, but lacks the quickness and playing speed to pull and lead on outside runs and cannot adjust well on the move. He has adequate flexibility to bendhis knees and pass block with a wide base, but struggles to run block with leverage and usually ends up bending at the waist, leaning and over-extending. He generally has decent coordination, but once he leans and reaches to maintain contact, he struggles to stay on his feet and finish blocking.

Q.A.B. Quick Feet C.O.D. Flexibility Coordination
5.0 6.0 5.0 5.0 5.0

COMPETITIVENESS Section Grade: 6.5
O'Callaghan is a very tough offensive lineman who consistently has stayed in the lineup despite getting dinged up. While his effort is always very good, O'Callaghan has consistently shown a knack for blocking his best on the most important plays. When he blocks in a small area, his production is good. He's not always consistent, but usually between good and very good. He has long arms and good natural strength, so once he locks up with both hands, he usually ties his man up and eliminates him from the play. He has the strength to get good movement on angle blocks, but struggles to consistently finish his man off because he leans and overextends too often. He does a good job of working with other linemen on defensive line stunts/loops and vs. delayed blitzes. He is no doubt a team player who has consistently shown that he will do whatever it takes to keep his man out of the play and never quits fighting and competing to eliminate his man -- even when he loses his feet he will grab and hold his man to try and stop him from getting involved in the play.

Toughness Clutch Play Production Consistency Team Player Pride/Quit
6.5 6.0 6.0 5.5 6.5 7.0

MENTAL ALERTNESS Section Grade: 6.0
O'Callaghan is a very smart offensive lineman and it shows in his consistently efficient blocking ability. His efficiency is what allowed him to be a productive offensive tackle at California. He has very good instincts and they combine with his foot quickness so that he can react quickly in a small area to defensive line stunts/loops and to delayed blitzes. He can only be as competitive a blocker as he is by maintaining his concentration, but he will get over-aggressive at times and it leads to him bending at the waist, leaning, over-extending and falling off blocks too often.

Learn/Retain Instincts/Reactions Concentration
6.5 6.0 6.0

STRENGTH/EXPLOSION Section Grade: 6.5
He has great height, long arms and excellent bulk/size for a guard. He has been a very durable offensive linemen at California and, with his size, strength and compeititiveness, he will be a very durable NFL guard. He lacks the flexibility to bend his knees, sink his hips and explosively fire-up into blocks. He's just not an explosive player. He has very good playing strength despite struggling to play with leverage. He has power to drive defensive linemen down the line of scrimmage on down/side blocks, can get movement on straight-ahead run blocks and holds his ground vs. straight-line power rushers.
