You should really check your data then. Going back to the 1999 draft, through the 2006 draft, over 35% of the picks ended up in at least one pro bowl. That would be playing spectacularly to me and 35% is not a small percentage.

I would also say that by looking through the picks that another 30% have ended up being solid starters.

I would also say that only around 15% have failed miserably.

That leaves the remaining 20% as the journey men type that start here and there, back up here and there, key special teamers ... that type.

So your numbers simply are not credible.

Bobby is in the 15% (fail) right now, he may break through to the 20% (journey men) some day.

If you don't end up with a starter in the first round, it's a bust. Bobby will never start in this league.

I agree for the most part. Bobby is a bust, the way the term in normally used. He's a mid-range first round pick who has no hope of starting on the team that drafted him 4 years ago. This is obviously about as far as possible from what was expected when he was drafted. That's a bust.

That doesn't mean he's useless, though. I think he could possibly start in a 4-3 system.

The Nickle LB spot is now my greatest worry on this team. He covers reasonably well. Not marginally but reasonably well. His run support is less than marginal.

NT is now #2.

Congrats Bobby. You are winning at something.

BlindFaith, are you considering all 1st round picks in your 35/30/...% etc numbers, or is that for the back half of the first round. My understanding of the draft is that each year there are a certain number of blue chippers, that everyone agrees on, and that number varies each year. But it generally seems to be a number in the teens. So the back half of the first round should be qualitatively different from the first half, even with the obligatory Raiders miscues.

Really though, Carpenter was just another of Parcells' pet cats that didn't pan out. When the Cowboys followed Parcells system of drafting, they seemed to do well; when he picked the guy himself, not so good.

I just looked at the first round in total, but there are pro bowlers from every round. Just looking back at the 2006 draft there were 14 pro bowl players drafted after Bobby. 5 in the first, 3 in the second, 4 in the fourth, 1 in the sixth and 1 in the seventh.

The point is that Bobby was the 18th player selected out of 255 players in the draft. For him to be just a nickel backer is not enough. If he was drafted in the fourth round, then maybe.

And word to the wise, don't spend too much time looking back at our 2006 draft. Pat Watkins is the best player we drafted. Yikes.

How would this look if hindsite was 20 20.

DeAngelo Williams 1st
Devin Hester 2nd
Owen Daniels 3rd
Rob Sims 4th
Dawan Landry 5th
Antoine Bethea 6th
Cortland Finnegan 7th

All of those guys were on the board when we picked for each round.

Carpenter is an embarrassment to the nfl and to the Dallas Cowboys.

I don't. He doesn't like to tackle. He doesn't like to be physical. I guess he got away with it in college because he was bigger and faster than everyone else. But now guys hit back. He doesn't like it.

That picture of him trying to tackle number 84 but getting stiff armed sums him up perfectly. Instead of getting low and getting his head in front of the guy he is trying to grab him up high.

What bugs the hell out of me is why didnt they bring in FA veterans to compete with him this off season? What happened to the notion of pushing players and churning the bottom of the roster? Guess that was just more lip service from Jerry Jones.

You look at a team like the Steelers and they can continually find young big athletic guys to play LB for them, we get 4 years of Bobby Carpenter. Nice!

You know, in the past I would go to great lengths to present the data to which I am referring to show exactly what I mean, but it's just not worth it for a throwaway remark about a backup player. I have no intention of defending Carpenter. Sometimes I think it's worth the discussion to tame the vitriol, but I think you guys like it.

He's a bust, I can roll with that.

The saddest part about the Carpenter saga is the level of respect that the rest of the team has for him, or the lack thereof. There have been a few players who openly mock his "softness". One of the most important things about being a team is having trust and confidence in your fellow team members that they can do their job and pull their own weight. In his 4th year Carpenter has only developed into 1 down player, that hasn't toughened much, in fact it seems he got a bit softer each year. If I am on the Cowboy defense I would expect everyone in my unit to risk their bodies as much and as hard as I do to win and to collect my check. We can debate whether he is a bust or not, but when your team mates openly mock you, that's an indication that they think you're a bust.

I thought it was a good pick at the time because I trusted Parcells, but sometime you gotta smell the coffee, he's not where he needs to be in his development on this team, and judging from what I've seen in this defense I would be ready to part ways.

The rookies drafted to replace Carp got hurt. This will likely be his last as a Cowboy.

If Jason Williams rehabs that ankle, he will have Carpenter's job before the end of the year.

I don't think Carpenter will hold up in coverage in the 46 sets or Bear front. In fact, I think he'll get smoked by teams like the Eagles.

I wanted so much to believe in Barbie but he is making it very difficult. On the field he appears more intterested in playing pittypat instead of tackle football.

I don't want to be so sickened and disgusted by a player who isn't a criminal and apparently works hard... But I am.

Carp is what he is......

a first round bust.....

The only think keeping him on the team......is his friendship with Romo :)

Big Bill sure was loyal to his old players......bringing some back and giving them a nice retirement check.....and helping others by making their sons rich.....
