Ok, this is what happened
Al Johnson weighed about 285 at end of season in December. As we all know, he couldnt handle a big DT or NT. The cowboys trainers and staff had been trying for 3 years to get him to add mass and muscle, but whatever reason it wasnt taking effect.

Being at the end of his season contract this year, Al Johnson after reading the rips about him, his lack of power he hit the weight room and gained strength as well as keeping his quickness. As you also know, when you generally work out you gain weight along with mass muscle.

Al Johnson gained up to about 312. Same thing happened to Marion Barber, he gained strength muscle, and improved upon his quickness the cowboys coaches and trainers said. If Barber has one liability it was his quickness and speed. Reports are that he improved that, and can give Julious Jones a run for his money this year.

Petti as you mentioned was about 365 before the senior bowl, with a bad foot. He got down to about 340, for season but he was soft baby fat, no muscle, stamina. Petti hit the offseasoning conditioning, and he is one of about 5 players this year that benched over 400 pounds.

Parcells said when he came to Dallas in 2003, only one player could bench over 400, and we all know who that was. Now this year, we have about 5 players that can bench over 400 pounds. Same thing happened to Flozell Adams, after being injured, and realizing that his football future window maybe closing, and realizing he no longer has Larry Allen helping him, Flozell hit the weights too, he improved his muscle mass too, and gained weight. Now you have to keep in mind that Flozell is 6-7, about 345 last year. So, I would have him now about 360, but with more muscle mass and strenght. Now that is a big huge man, that finally is hungry. Also, best to my knowledge, this is Flozells last year on contract, or he has one more year. So that adds in, but reports were that Flozell after being about a year from football, he realized his dreams of a super bowl might be slipping away, so he worked out, hard.

Now to someone that mentioned Watkins now needing weight. Wrong, he needs more mass muscle, kinda like Beraiut. Mickey said, that last year, Beraiut, was bout 190, if that, and he was skinny, but would hit you. This year, after working out, and about 210, Mickey said that he has muscle, and mass, along with possibly improving his speed too if his kneed is ok.

Watkins as all reports are, is way skinny, has great range though in speed for a safety that is 6-5, but I venture he is like Beraiut, about a year away from realizing his potential.

Several other players that are reported having a great offseason is Chris Canty, whom was bout 285 last year, he is solid 300 now, and Mickey Spagnola said he is a beast now. Next, we have Demarcus Ware, whom has gained about 15 pounds of muscle, mass, and maybe even improved his quickness too. Reports are from several pro scouts, that he will have a monster year. Next, we have Stephen Peterman, who has to show something this year being his 3rd year. Finally, we have Colombo, Marc, whom has done same thing, his knee they say is fine now, and he even improved his weight lifting, now keep in mind, Flozell Adams is a huge man at 6-7, about 345. Well Marc Colombo is 6-8, about 335 to 345. So, is Petti at 6-6 and 325, so I think if guys can stay healthy on offensive line, we will have a huge big offensive line dominating in running game.

Who are the 5 guys benching over 400 on a regular basis?

Petitti, Flozell?

Canty?

Actually, I'm pretty sure the original Parcells quote was about cleaning 400. I'm sure tons of the guys can bench 400.

But I'd like names, too. :D

That's my understanding too as Mickey Spagnola discussed it. Mick talked about Al struggled to keep his weight and strength throughout last season.. which is exactly why he was owned by every DT he faced. Al Johnson was on BaD Radio (1310 The Ticket) several weeks back (end of minicamp)and mentioned that he had gained 15 to 20 pounds of MUSCLE and that he'd been eating a lot but also working in the weight room vigorously.

All I can say is that I'm exstatic about Al Johnson putting on that much muscle and HOPEFULLY tremendously improving his strength. Other than him tipping off the DLine when the ball was going to be snapped, his only problem last season was not being able to physically handle the impsoing DT's he faced... he seemed to have his footwork and technique together (sure as heck was better than Gurode's technique and mental mistakes). SURELY the OLine coaches will remedy him squeezing the ball just before he snapped it giving away the snap to the DLinemen.

Maybe Al should talk to Stepnoski. If nothing ese, he might get a feeling for the munchies.

No way this is true. I read all of the strength reports from previous years and we had several 500+ bench pressers on our team. I know Dat was one of them. Jees, I am a pedestrian athlete and I could bench near 400 lbs. With no nutrition coach or suplements.

It was clean not bench. LA was the only one who could do it back then.

I see where Vandie has put on 7 pounds. He is bulking up so he can make some tackles if he has to kick off. He will be a beast on special teams! Parcells likes versatility and Vandie being able to make the big hit will really give him the edge over Suisam in camp!

I wouldn't think that's a good thing if Mike is in position to make some tackles. That would mean a breakdown in Dallas's kickoff coverage and great field position for the opposing team...

Great report, cowboyjoe.

Though I doubt Marion Barber increase his speed significantly enough that he is as fast or faster than Julius Jones.

You can improve quickness and get the most out of your speed potential. But speed is something you either have it or you don't. (Which always made me suspicious of Flo Jo who used to be an average sprinter then started blowing away some of the top sprinters in the world).

You don't get significantly faster, especially if Julius Jones is doing the same type of workout that Barber is.

There is no way he is faster then he was at the combine/tryouts. Quicker- I doubt that as well. There are some things that you either have or do not have and there is nothing you can do about it.

Don't the players all go thru conditioning and weight tests on Friday, before practise starts on Saturday?
If so, will the results be published somewhere ?
