Campo was terrible but he had a good defense check out the stats.
Stats didn't tell the whole story. Most teams played extremely conservative because they knew we couldn't score, so they didn't want to risk turning it over and giving us points.

One of the top defenses wouldn't have the performance the Boys did against the Dolphins (I think) on Thanksgiving.

I remember them well because I had NFL Sunday Ticket all 3 of those years and got to watch all the misery, every week.

The Campo years were bad, but I hung in there and felt really bad when everyone knew Campo was a lame duck because Jones was courting BP on a plane. I always felt that little matter should've been kept quiet, but of course it was leaked, making an already difficult time even more unbearable for Campo. Say what you want about him, but he deserved better than that.

I hardly remember the games that were played those three seasons. When the Cowboys struggle, my memories are few and far between. When they win, I remember darn near every snap. Funny how that works. I've been a fan since 1978, so I've seen some of the highest highs and the lowest lows. I will always be a Dallas Cowboys fan. They matter to me, regardless of their record. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Yep I know. Not making any form of an excuse or justifying anything. Just saying why it sucked for me. But the team had to go through the salary cap mess to get better. Just wish they never put the team in that position. Bad memories now because they have a handle on it :)

I agree. We had big money still invested in several players who were forced to retire due to injuries as well as guys on the down hill side of their career but remember these were guys who helped get us the SB's. I don't have many good memories of those season either but I never missed a snap even then.

It was hard to hate Campo because he looks very much like my grandmother. :laugh2:

I seem to remember my hatred was pretty much focused in the direction of Coslet. Man, that guy was a clueless waste of space.

Here in the DC area, the Skins fans love to label the local Cowboy fans as bandwagon jumping frontrunners who disappear whenever the team does poorly (and there are some of those, for sure), but I ran into another Boys fan here the other day and we spent some time joking about those lean 5-11 years. I wore my gear then, just as much as I do now.

hahaha I forgot all about Coslet!!

How about the play where he had his old TE from Cincy (Tony something) fall down at the LOS, then get up and step into the end zone, wide open? They ran that a few times when Coslett was there.

We mostly had a good defense, but I think it was in 2000 when we had a horrible run defense. I can clearly remember Duce Staley having his way with our defense both times he played us that year. Didn't we also give up back to back 200 yd rushers at one point. I do remember the turnaround though on defense, especially when RoyW31 showed up in 2002.

Dont get me wrong Im not saying noone followed the Boys in the early decade... What I am saying is, noone brags about their fanhood like they did in the 90s in reference to the 89 team! After every Super Bowl victory, fans would say "I was a fan when they were 1-15" or bring up the fact that Tom Landry was the only coach, like tha knowledge wasnt common placed.

But things have changed with the times, now ppl despise the Campo yrs with as much contempt as some of Boys fans had for the Skins 91 season. New-Gen fans loathe those days and often compare the 5-11 seasons as if its something they fear and would not accept or get over lightly.

Its easy to be a fan of a good team, its the hard years that make you a real fan... With that being said, why would so many New-Gen fans deny their burben from those days with mockery at every turn it wasnt like they didnt cheer for guys like Troy Hambrick or Ryan Leaf... They were Raider fans or Patriots fans... but they were not Cowboy fans! I

The old guys know what Im talking about, with the guys with the Aikman Jersey and the LA Dodgers hat!
Forgive me for a minute while I go off on a rant.

I can't stand when anyone attacks Dallas Cowboys fans. Not even when it is our own fans. Let me bottom line this for you and every other person who has no idea what is in someone else's heart with regards to this team. Every fan on this forum, young and old, is invested in this team. It doesn't matter if they are positive or negative. It doesn't matter if they are in their 70's, 60's, 50's, 40's, 30's, 20's or teens. They are here because they love this team.

Saying that they won't admit to following the team during the Campo years is nothing but a load of crap. Anyone in here who has been a fan longer than just this decade or the last few years is here admitting to you and the rest of the world that they followed the team through the Campo years.

A fan since 2003 or more recent years is the only fan in here who cannot make that claim. You cannot make that claim of anyone else. No one can. It is not right and it is not poignant.

Just because someone isn't happy during certain years does not mean they are any less a fan. If they have emotion invested in this team, they are a fan. That isn't even debatable.

Actually, the Campo years were the most fun for me. No expectation = no letdowns. Plus, I went to a lot of games then. Got to see TO get smacked at the star, as well as Quincy engineer a late game comeback on the Panthers.

it was on Hard Knocks when the Cowboys were featured and showed Campo bending over in the dolphin pool and getting a kiss....

The biggest reason why people say "I was there for 1-15, man!!!" is because we won three super bowls and every Dallas Cowboy fan was labelled a bandwagon fan.

When we repeat the feat, and when someone sees us in a Cowboys hat and yells "Bandwagon", we can say "**** you, man - I was there for Campo and the baseball playing Quarterbacks." Right now, we never have a necessity to do so, because we haven't won a ****ing playoff game since I was 12.

Although I do have to say I'm not sure this exactly what you were attempting to get at. The OP seems mostly like gibberish.

The 2000 season was the begining of the end. Losing Galloway on the first game of the season totally deflated the team. Then we lost Troy towards the end of a very painful season. Watching Troy attempting to salvage the season throwing to the likes of Damon Hodge, Wane McGarrity and Chriss Brazzell was painful indeed.

What looked like a very good team on paper in the offseason turned out to be one of the worst in team history. Fluke injuries had a lot to do with it. People were dropping like flies. The last couple of games that year we had an all pro team on street clothes: Aikman, Woodson, Teague, Hennings, Stepnoski, Ismail, Hennings, etc.

I call BS also......

Starting in 1985, I have faithfully walked out my front door the morning of a Cowboys game and proudly hung my Dallas Cowboys Flag. I live in the epicenter of Packer country and have taken my fair share of grief over the years. The flag was stolen once, and hidden in the bushes twice over the years. After most losses, my neighbor comes over, rings the doorbell, and I go take the flag down to his good natured ridicule. I do the same when the Packers lose while he takes his Packer flag down.

Not once have I thought about not putting that flag out, even through the Gailey and Campo years. I just had to endure the ridicule more often.
