BP has some tough choices on the roster

I created a spreadsheet to come up with a final 45 man roster. I have 55 guys on that roster. :) Usually we have enough injuries that roster problems resolve themselves but not this year (not that I'm complaining. This is a much better situation to be in).

Here are a few questions to answer:

Pepper Johnson or Monty Stanley?
Lousaka Polite or a 4th tight end?
Fabani or Columbo? (I have a feeling one of these guys are gone, or McQuistan is gone)
Shanle or Fowler? Maybe neither
Six total defensive linemen? 8 total defensive backs?

It'll be interesting to see how all this shakes out. There is going to be a few veterans released who will be surprised.

Pepper Johnson or Monty Stanley?
Hands down Pepper Johnson - Stanley to PS

Lousaka Polite or a 4th tight end?
Polite should go - He's not helping the running game, and we need all of those TE's for this new TE set.

Fabani or Columbo?
Adios Fabini - Columbo starts.

Shanle or Fowler? Maybe neither
But if I was forced to pick one, I would go with Fowler based on his last couple of games last year.

Here's my final 55 players as of now: 26 offensive players, 25 defensive players, and 4 special team players. Notice there's no Hensen, Fowler, nor Shanle.

Lousaka Polite or Sean Ryan ... Rector ... Fabani or Columbo ... Coleman ... Stanley ... Boiman ... Lenny Williams ... Abram Elam. Those eight cuts would get the roster down to 47 but would leave only six defensive linemen (which I can't see Parcells doing), four cornerbacks, and three safties. So maybe throw Coleman back on the roster and drop another player? Perhaps move Ratliff to nose and drop both Johnson and Stanley?

QB Drew Bledsoe,Tony Romo
RB Julius Jones,Marion Barber,Tyson Thompson,Lousaka Polite
WR Terrell Owens,Terry Glenn,Patrick Crayton,Sam Hurd,Jamaica Rector,Skyler Green
TE Jason Witten,Anthony Fasano,Ryan Hannam,Sean Ryan
OL Flozell Adams T,Marc Columbo T,Jason Fabani T,Rob Pettite T,Pat McQuistan T,Marco Rivera G,Kyle Kosier G,Cory Proctor G,Andre Gurode C,Al Johnson C
DL Chris Canty E,Kenyon Coleman E,Jason Hatcher E,Jay Ratliff E,Marcus Spears E,Jason Ferguson N,Thomas Johnson N,Monty Stanley N
LB Greg Ellis O,Demarcus Ware O,Kevin Burnett O,Rocky Boiman O,Al Singleton O,Bradie James I,Akin Ayodele I,Bobby Carpenter I
CB Terence Newman,Anthony Henry,Aaron Glenn,Jacques Reeves,Lenny Williams
S Roy Williams,Keith Davis,Pat Watkins,Abram Elam
SP Mike Vanderjagt K,Shaun Suisham K,Mat McBriar P,LP Ladoucur LS

Drop (or trade) Coleman, one of the OLine guys, and either Lenny Williams or Stanley or Suisham. Add Henson or your choice 3rdQB. Injuries will probably factor heavilly in the last few guys cut.

However, that line up looks good!

for the quinzillionth time the 3rd QB does not count on your came day roster. This means there will be a 3rd quarterbak carried on the final 53. If not Henson then a mystery QB will be there

Unless they changed something recently, the 3rd QB does count on your 53 man roster. I don't care much about the active game roster, Parcells will chew on that one and spit out something....

It counts aginst the 53 man roster it does not count aginst the game day roster where you can only dress 45 players.

Kenyon Coleman is on the trading block. He'll likely either get traded or cut.

Either Rector or Hurd could get cut, since neither of them appears to play much on special teams. Austin could make it just because he does (he had two tackles last night).

I don't see how Polite and Ryan both make the team. And I think Polite's ability to run the ball once in a while gives him the edge.

I don't think Lenny Williams has a chance to make the roster. Nate Jones could, though. And if Jones and Reeves both make it, that might make Elam head to the practice squad, since either of them could be our fourth safety.

It will be difficult to keep five offensive tackles, especially if we have to keep two kickers.

And of course, and unfortunately, injuries settle several of the position battles for us.

It might just be me but why doesn't McBriar do the kickoffs to save a roster spot?
interesting. the same theory applies to the drew henson situation which somebody mentioned yesterday (the issue there is money and cap penalties). with the kickers the issue is vandy hasn't been able to kick yet. so we're stuck with suisham wether he does kickoffs or not, just to be able to kick extra points if the season started tomorrow.

Because he can't kick off.

that boggles my mind. the guy can boom punts 60 yards downfiled but can't kickoff 60 yards. what's the difference? i played soccer and eventhough the soccer ball and football are totally different, once you learn how to kick you can do both. i never undestood why you would need 2 guys let alone be interchaegable.

I see Jones being a progress stopper for Elam. At this point they both bring the same to the table but Elam has the potential to be better. Jones in his fourth year is what he is.

Im also surprised that we havent gotten some decent offers for Coleman yet. Servicable 300+ DLinemen dont grow on trees.

i fully understand. it just that it seems that bp has some choices to make elsewhere. anywho it won't happen for other reasons which have been covered ad nauseaum. for your information, teams have gone through entire seasons with only 2 qbs. we did ourselves in the early 90's with troy and buearlein as our only qb's on the roster. ended up picking up the likes of craig kupp as a back up when troy went down with an injury late in the season. kupp was cut the minute troy was healthy enough to suit up. so there you have it, it's not as farfetched as you may think.

jones is in his 3rd year and can play corner. elam can only play safety. how is it that both bring the same to the table since they play different positions?

Jones is in just his third year, and he's actually younger than Elam is. Jones can play cornerback or safety, and he played 317 plays on special teams last season (second only to Copper's 321 on our team). Elam most likely could be stashed on the practice squad to start the season, then be brought up if we need him. If we have to squeeze a spot on the roster, it very well could be at safety, and Elam would be the one who's out. If we can keep him, great, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's on the practice squad to start the season.
