i fully understand. it just that it seems that bp has some choices to make elsewhere. anywho it won't happen for other reasons which have been covered ad nauseaum. for your information, teams have gone through entire seasons with only 2 qbs. we did ourselves in the early 90's with troy and buearlein as our only qb's on the roster. ended up picking up the likes of craig kupp as a back up when troy went down with an injury late in the season. kupp was cut the minute troy was healthy enough to suit up. so there you have it, it's not as farfetched as you may think.

If the game day roster ristrictions weren't there, then perhaps. The tactical advantage of having that emergency QB is just so great. They don't pick the best 53 players, then come game day do the best they can. The 53 is decided with the realization that only so many can play. I can see a tactical move where we keep only 2 QB's for a game while holding on to someone to trade.....but if you go through the whole season with only 2 QB's you are giving too much of a tactical edge to your rivals.

Week to Week
46 on game day > 45 on game day

at Tackle I am beginning to think that Pat McQ will make the club. Parcells really talks him up which I know can be deceiving but he's actually spoken quite definitively of the guys future.

He may not be good enough to play presently but I'm not sure the guy makes it to the PS and I doubt Parcells will risk losing him completely.

The Better the Oline plays the better for Q-the more likely to make the Squad. I think Fabini is a security blanket for BP. Last year on several ocasions BP mentioned good OLine prospects do not clear waivers.

In order to get down to 53 (54 in this case) & keep the few players I differ with you on, here's my take:

(3) - Bledsoe, Romo plus Henson (or another 3rd QB on PS?)
(4) - JJ, Barber, TT & Polite
(3) - Witten, Fasano, Hannam
(6) - TO, Glenn, Crayton, Hurd, Rector, Green (Austin to PS)
(10) - Adams, Pettiti, Colombo, Fabini, McQuistan, Kosier, Proctor, Riveria, Gurode, Johnson (OG Batiste to PS)

(6) - Spear, Ratliff, Ferguson, Johnson, Canty, Hatcher (Stanley to PS)
(9) - Ware, Burnett, Ayodele, Carpenter, James, Fowler, Ellis, Singleton, Boiman (Hoyte & Glymph to PS)
(4) - Williams, Elam, Davis, Watkins
(5) - Newman, Henry, A.Glenn, Reeves, Jones (Williams to PS)
(4) - Vanderjagt, McBrian, Ladaciouv (sp?), Shisham

PS - Stanley, Baptiste, Hoyte, Austin, Williams should(?) clear waivers. Doubt McQuistan or Elam do; same goes for Hurd, Rector, McQuistan. All have gotten noticed too much.

Total ... 54 (so 1 still needs to go).

BTW: Comes down to a battle between Polite and Ryan. Whose the better blocker, receiver, runner, ST player? & would often be most active on game day?

Im also surprised that we havent gotten some decent offers for Coleman yet. Servicable 300+ DLinemen dont grow on trees.

Probably because teams expect him to be cut.

Looks about right 2 me. I think we drop 1 OL though, 5 tackles seems a bit much. Fabini makes the squad IMO based on Monday night. We could drop 1 WR if necessary, but we may go 6 WR's to start the season until we're sure Glenn and Owens are closer to 100%.

Suisham should be on the PS no way we use another spot for a kicker

Vandy can't stay healthy right now, much less make a kick (hopefully that changes soon), and you want him to kickoff???

If you place a kicker on the PS, you are likely to lose him as soon as someone has a kicker injury......kicker is one of the few positions you can walk into and be 100% the same week.

that boggles my mind. the guy can boom punts 60 yards downfiled but can't kickoff 60 yards. what's the difference? i played soccer and eventhough the soccer ball and football are totally different, once you learn how to kick you can do both. i never undestood why you would need 2 guys let alone be interchaegable.
i have never ever understood this either..

When he gets healthy BP already said he would handle kickoffs

I see our Defensive backfield staying pretty much as it was last year. Pat Watkins will take Willie Pile's spot and we may carry an extra safety in Elam. Elam is a good ST player as well as really showing up in his stints with the regular D. Parcells really likes Nate Jones for his versatility and Reeves is a solid and versatile backup. If we try to sneak Elam to the PS someone will claim him (maybe NO who needs safety help)...he has shown too much for that not to happen. It's a good situation for the Cowboys when we have to start looking at cutting good players and it will be interesting to see how Parcells plays it.

AT tackle we also have a numbers problem but not so much quality wise. Colombo, Pettiti and Fabini are all pretty much interchangeable with very little difference. Colombo likely gets the starting job and Pettiti has been getting reps at LT so it looks like BP wants him to be the swing guy. Since we will likely keep McQuistan as well that pretty much makes Fabini the odd man out. I guess $1.75 mil to come to training camp ain't a bad way to spend a summer.

Also, with Flo having the calf problem we have a lot of uncertainty there. I can't see us playing McQ at the LT spot this year in regular season; he'd get Bledsoe killed. So if Flo is down for some extended period do we try to go with Pettiti at LT or try to bring in a vet from somewhere? Maybe one of the guys from NE. And if we bring someone in what happens to the numbers game then?

I was not thrilled with the Vanderxxx signing when it happened. He is exactly what I was afraid he would be; an OLD, washed up vet on his last legs and likely either going to be injured or just losing his edge. Looks like we are stuck with him so I guess we carry two kickers which sucks because we will have to cut a real football player to do this. Once again the firing of Steve Hoffman (who would have McBrier kicking off by now) bites us in the butt...just like last year when his firing cost us actual games. Oh well, water under the bridge.

I've thought exactly the same thing about Hoffman. We debate roster cuts ad nauseum and for the past 2 yrs I've said the Hoffman move was one of the worst in Cowboys history. Lost 2-3 games last yr. and may cut a starting quality player this yr. just because we can't "find" a kicker. Hoffman could have pulled one out of the parking lot. Is McB that good of a punter that this couldn't have been addresses this spring/summer. Either he should be taught to kick off or cut him. The same could be said for Vanderjack

Everything I have read so far is very interesting and enlightning! When you have lots of good people that may get cut you know that your team is finally getting really good! Can't wait for the final cuts.................I still think you will see some trades in the next couple of weeks. You hear so many people say " why give up a draft choice when you know that so and so will be cut". That philosophy is good if you need a guy and you are maybe in the likely group of top five when it comes time to pick up a good pick......but what if you need a good player who is cut and you are one of the last teams to get a shot of obtaining said cut player! Oh well, just a thought! ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL???????

I agree that I think Rector makes it, Shanle and Fowler don't.
I think Junior Glymph makes a pretty good case against being cut too. I think Stanley goes to the PS.
The most interesting places that aren't very clear-cut IMO are:
LB, WR, and DL
I'm afraid we may have to cut a LB, WR, and/or DL that is pretty good.
I don't think we're going to cut anyone of significance at OL or DB.

I'll buy most of this but I don't see us carrying 10 OL. One of the backup tackles has to go and I'm thinking either Fabini or we try to slide McQuistan to the PS. Green makes the team in place of the extra OT. Also, I'm not sure Fowler makes it (but he might) which would let us carry an extra TE...maybe Ryan or Curtis.

Unless Hoffman's real first name is "Jesus" I highly doubt he would have gotten anything more out of what we had last year. And Vandy has never had a kicking coach his entire career, yet somehow he still managed to be the most accurate kicker in NFL history.

And if punters could just easily pick up kickoffs, don't you think a whole lot more punters would be kicking off? Wouldn't you think every team in the NFL who had a FG kicker who couldn't kick off would want to save a roster spot too?
