BPA, reach for need, or lose on a trade down?

I had been thinking about this a lot lately specifically at pick 12. There is a decent chance that the Cowboys get wiped at 12 for the defensive positions. The consensus seems to be there’s 6-7 players worth pick 12.

After that there is a cluster of offensive players basically till almost pick 20. There is a solid chance offensive players are your best options. If this happens it’s possible they can get a good trade but not guaranteed. If that is the case what would be the teams best move?

Reaching for need is the worst option. You either take the best player or trade down (maybe for less value) but that’s going to depend on how bad you are getting shorted in the trade.

In fine with a "reach" depending on the player. Taking Theineman at 12 or Rodriguez at 20 maybe considered a reach but neither would likely be available when we picked again, even if we had a 2nd.

I think MN takes Thieneman if he’s there at 18, so if you want the second best S you’d have to take him at 12.

I’d take Delane at 12 if he’s there, Thieneman if he’s not, and at 20 CJ Allen, Hill, Jr., or Rodriguez, whoever fits the new system best.

I think a WR will be available. Before the draft starts Jerry should have exhausted conversations with Mulagetta and know if we can extend Pickens, if he is willing to play on the tag or if he wants to be traded.

But Jerry may not even start negotiations until after the draft.

Decent chance Styles gets to us because of FA movement & off ball Lb'rs not perceived as value that high.

I would want to move up and get one of the flashing lights just above us. Bailey ,Bain, Styles or downs. A trade with Cincy at 10 would allow us to get a blinking light. Probably the last one left. Styles or Downs most likely. Picks 12 and 20 for picks 10 41 72 and 110. That would also allow us to have 2 extra picks. Then we would have 6 picks in the top 112. That would fill some needs.

BPA is great for teams without any glaring holes. For me it’s simple. Take the BPA that can help us win NOW. Drafting our future #2 WR or a change of pace RB won’t cut it. I don’t care if the perceived value isn’t there, or if it’s a guy that was a projected late 1st rounder, take him when you have the opportunity if he can help us win NOW.

Trading down is a last resort. At #12, they must come up with a starter on defense. Only the worst luck would leave them without an option for a defensive player ready to start.

I would guess that the Cowboys have a plan in place and already know what they are going to do. That MAY be to play Pickens on the year or that may mean trading him is on the horizon.

I lean more toward a trade possibility because it’s been super quiet from the Cowboys and Pickens’ camp, and that’s out of character for both.

The giants or the commanders are rumored to go for Styles .. even though both should look for OT if they want their young QBs to survive the season.

Styles too good for either to pass up and also keeps him away from Dallas.

As for Dallas, if they can’t trade down, take Anthony Hill and Jacob Rodriguez in the first.. Due to no 2nd round pick. We need linebacker help.

I always thought you draft the most worthy player on the board at the time you’re picking. Even if you don’t need them.
But we’re not in the luxury of doing that right now in the position we’re in. We’re going to have to take best of available of what we need.
11 starters on offense, 11 on defense, the first 22 picks should be a starter in the first round

If we trade Pickens our offense will suffer a major blow and will be nowhere near as good as last year. We need to keep him this year and hope the draft falls in our favor.

Take the best player… if you love the player no sense in trading down.

Also if styles makes it to 9-10 I wouldn’t be suprised to see someone jump us. So I’d be willing to part with that third to move up a spot or two.

Same at 20. If we like a guy there don’t get cute and trade down to 25. Take your guy.

There probably won't be any trade of Pickens before the draft. He would need to sign his tender before that could happen. Given that the deadline for a deal is July 15 it is doubtful that anything happens with him over the next six weeks. They haven't really engaged in vigorous negotiations yet.
