The play action pass thing has been bothering me since JG got here. It was even more sickening watching Brees use it early and often against our defense, while sitting in a clean pocket picking us apart. They ran the heck of the ball in the first quarter and still ZERO play action pass attempts.

The article mentions what I've been posting here about Romo and play action passing. He is so effective using it but JG doesn't utilise it. Why? I have no idea but to to think JG is too stubborn or too stupid.

And the article mentions the same stat I've posted before. You don't need a good running game for the play action to be effective

The way we utilized him in 2012 and now in 2013 are completely different. We actually let Tony be the gun slinger he is in 2012 and him and Dez were the best Duo in the 2nd half of the NFL. This year we've neutered Romo to where he won't throw to Dez in double coverage much. Instead he's taking the much safer underneath routes that are 1 on 1. Which isn't a bad strategy if you have a very liable number 2 WR, we don't though, at least not right now.

I agree. I mentioned in another thread that I think Romo and/or Garrett are the main problem(s) with this offense. I think we have a lot of playmakers at the skill positions and our offensive line is improved. I don't think Romo is a bad QB and I've always been a Romo supporter, but I think he's a bad QB this season. I don't care what kinda stats people throw at me. I've been watching Romo for years. He doesn't look the same this year. His rating probably makes him look better than he really has been because he's barely thrown any interceptions this year. Anyway, you said it perfectly, these coaches have neutered Romo and he's afraid to throw the ball to Dez. Romo better get his head right before it's too late, and these coaches better do a better job of maximizing our talent or they better get outta town.

Is Romo the only QB in the league that has to have 5 All Pro's on the offensive line to throw the ball down field? Damn you got two competent tackles, a rookie playing well at C, how much more help does our 100 million dollar QB need?

I agree. Our offensive line is still a problem but it's much better than last year and there are lots of good offenses with sloppy O-lines. We added T. Williams, Murray is back, Dez has a year more experience, Free is improved, Tyron has a year more experience, The Beard is a godsend, and we had Brian Waters playing at a high level (and the offense was still playing poorly). Everything has gotten better on offense personnel-wise, but the offense looks much worse than in years past. The only two explanations I can come up with are Romo and Garrett/Callahan.

Holy crow, you may be on to something! So those 19 interceptions last year were bad?

No receiver with as many touchdowns as Bryant has seen only one pick come on his targets. Actually, of the wide receivers to score at least five times this year, every single one has had at least one interception thrown by his quarterback on his targets.

Add that to the list as to why Dez is a top WR in this league.

Despite being an obvious talent in jump-ball situations, Bryant has the 11th-lowest deep target rate in the NFL (among 67 qualifying receivers). Only 13.5 percent of Bryant's targets have come at least 20 yards down field. In comparison, Ravenswide receiver Torrey Smith checks in at nearly three times that mark and Bengalswide receiver A.J. Green has been targeted downfield at almost twice Bryant's rate.

This is not okay.

2006 line was as bad as any line Romo had play under yet we threw deep. More JG got hold of the offense, the things Romo used to great at disappeared from it.

Well is that really the case?

Seems detroit and the Viks handled up on Romo pretty well. And the Saints.

My contention is they need to protect long enough for longer routes to develop.

Is that Romo? He may have a hand in it.

Is that the line?

That could be as well. I don't believe it is one thing.

I also think the defense, or lack thereof has a hand in the decisions Romo is making now. Whatever combination it is, it needs to be fixed because other teams are doubling Dez and forcing Dallas to win with a rookie and a 1st year guy and Witten.

And this is heresy, but has Witten lost a little bit?

He was looking trash even when the oline was playing good. Romo and Garrett are clowns.

Whoa! Why was I thinking you were a big supporter of Garrett? I guess I was thinking of someone else!?!? Or have you recently thrown in the towel as it pertains to JG?

This is actually an interesting article -- well worth the read.

Is anybody else as shocked as I am that is from Bleacher Report?

I was shocked until I read the byline. Jonathan Bales has been writing about the Cowboys for a while at his site, DC Times. Lots of statistical content. He used to post here when that site was starting up.
